HE Cathedral precincts of to-day are conterminous with those of the Middle Ages-containing the Priory of Saint Swithun, T and are still surrounded by the great wall of the monastery. ' But while the church itself has been lucky in escaping most of the misfortunes which have overtaken so many cathedral and other churches, the monastic, buildings have been among the most unfortunate. The greater number have been entirely destroyed. The present lay-out of the Close not only tells us nothing of the monastic plan, but so far as possible misleads us. The only building which informs us of anything that we could not have guessed for ourselves is the Deanery. That does tell us at least where the Prior v lived. For the rest, the site of the very dorter, as the monks called their dormitory, is uncertain, while we are still more ignorant of the position of the infirmary, a great building probably measuring 200. feet by 50 feet.1 There is little left either of material remains, or of documentary evidence to give us a hint on these things, for the documents have perished and the general topography has been turned upside down and its character entirely transformed. Upside down because the main entrance to the precincts is now on the South, whereas it was formerly to the North, and transformed because the straight walks . of the cloister and the square courts and gardens harmonizing with the architecture have given place to elegant serpentine carriage sweeps which branch into one another with easy curves, like a well-planned railway junction. -

Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

St Swithun Was Bishop of Winchester
The Story of St Swithun A long time ago, in the 800’s and before the present Cathedral was built; St Swithun was Bishop of Winchester. There used to be a beautiful but small cathedral built by the Anglo- Saxons on this site, with blue glass in the windows, green tiles on the floor and carvings and paintings on the walls. This was Bishop Swithun’s Cathedral. Bishop Swithun was a kind man and walked all over Hampshire making sure his people were safe and had all they needed. One day he was walking over the bridge and talking to people as he went when he came across a woman stood to one side and she was crying. Bishop Swithun stopped and asked the woman why she was so upset. Between sobs the woman explained that she’d been carrying a big basket of eggs to market to sell, but there were so many people on the bridge, someone had accidently knocked against her and she’d dropped the basket, breaking all the eggs. Kind Bishop Swithun had a think and then took the woman’s hand in his and told her not to worry. Suddenly, the eggs were whole again! It was a miracle! Bishop Swithun knew he was getting old and that he wouldn’t live for ever. It would soon be time for him to go to heaven. He told those in charge of the old Cathedral that he didn’t want to be buried inside the Cathedral like the previous bishops and kings. He wanted a simple grave, outside the main doors of the Cathedral so that people could walk over his grave as they went in and out of the beautiful church and remember that they should love one another, just as Bishop Swithun had tried to do all his life. -

This article considers the extent to which tombs of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century bishops represented a set of episcopal ideals distinct from those conveyed by the monuments of earlier bishops on the one hand and contemporary laity and clergy on the other. It argues that in death bishops were increasingly undifferentiated from other groups such as the gentry in the dress, posture, location and inscriptions of their monuments. As a result of the inherent tension between tradition and reform which surrounded both bishops and tombs, episcopal monuments were unsuccessful as a means of enhancing the status or preserving the memory and teachings of their subjects in the wake of the Reformation. etween 1400 and 1700, some 466 bishops held office in England and Wales, for anything from a few months to several decades.1 The B majority died peacefully in their beds, some fading into relative obscurity. Others, such as Richard Scrope, Thomas Cranmer and William Laud, were executed for treason or burned for heresy in one reign yet became revered as saints, heroes or martyrs in another. St Catherine of Alexandria – the legendary saint By Tom Watson Tom is a Trustee of the Friends of Winchester Cathedral and Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Media & Communication at Bournemouth University Within Winchester Cathedral, there are at least three representations of St Catherine of Alexandria. There is an image in the Holy Sepulchre Chapel, a stained glass panel in the Joys of Mary series in the North Presbytery Aisle and a minor statue in the Great Screen. Outside and about a mile away, to the south east, is St Catherine’s Hill where the settlement of Winchester may have started in the Iron Age. In this article, the story of this very popular saint of the Middle Ages will be explored along with the varied indicators of her popularity. In England, there are 70 churches with dedications to St Catherine ranging from Ventnor on the Isle Wight in the central south to New Brancepeth, near Durham, in the north east. The closest dedication to the Cathedral is only three miles distant at St Catherine of Alexandria church, Littleton. As well, 170 medieval bells, which are controlled by a wheel, were dedicated to her. [1] Not only was St Catherine a popular saint in English church dedications, but the names Catherine, Katherine, Caterina and Catalina were also popular names of other saints. At last count, including a Korean woman, Saint Catherine Chong Ch’oryom (d.1846), sanctified in 1984 by Pope John Paul II, there are 11 saints with these names and another three with Blessed or beatified status. That’s 14 in all. -
On a Palimpsest Brass of Bishop White, at Winchester College, and Brasses of the White Family at Southwick
79 ON A PALIMPSEST BRASS OF BISHOP WHITE, AT WINCHESTER COLLEGE, AND BRASSES OF THE WHITE FAMILY AT SOUTHWICK. BY PERCY G. LANGDON. The Chapel of Winchester College formerly contained one of the finest collections of monumental brasses in England, but through the restoring (?) hand of one, and the carelessness of another, but little remains to tell of their former grandeur. At the restoration of the chapel in 1877, tne brasses were taken up and stowed away for safety, as was supposed, but when they were required for replacing all had disappeared. A fragment of one only having escaped the sacrilegious hand. This fragment consists of a portion of the effigy of Bishop White, which composed his cope, and is now in the keeping of the present Warden, the Rev. G. B. Lee, by whose kindness and courtesy the writer was lately permitted to obtain a rubbing here reproduced (Plate I). It is a palimpsest, being engraved on both sides, having on the reverse the figure of a widow in mourning of date circa 1440. The memorial seen in the chapel at the present day has ^ been pfaced there at the sole expense of Edwin Freshfield, Esq. LL.D., F.S.A., an old Wykehamist, who has generously restored other brasses and in various ways shewn his love for the ancient foundation of which he was a scholar and is now a member of the governing body. The modern brass, . which purports to be a facsimile of the original, measures 7-ft. 5f-in. x 4-ft 2-in., and depicts White vested in a handsome cope diapered with pomegranates, marguerites, and Tudor roses. -

SCHISM, APOSTASY, ANGLICAN ORDERS AND ECUMENISM 1. HENRY VIII - SCHISM In popular understanding, King Henry VIII is regarded as having founded the Church of England. He did not; and this fact is central to the understanding of both 16th Century Church history and modern ecumenical issues. Henry was awarded the title "Defender of the Faith" for having defended the doctrines of the Catholic Church against the German heretic Martin Luther. Subsequently in declaring himself to be the Supreme Head of the Church in England in 1534 after the Pope had upheld the validity of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, by refusing him a declaration of nullity, (he had not sought a divorce) he went into schism and, in usurping papal authority, into heresy. But he never founded a separate Church. With the exception of Bishop (later Cardinal) John Fisher, all the Bishops, many perhaps in fear for their lives, took the oath of allegiance to him as "Supreme Head" of the Church in England. 2. EDWARD VI - PROTESTANTISATION Henry died in 1547, and was succeeded by the young Edward VL Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, was now free to set about the protestantising of the Church and started the process by commissioning the preparation of a "Book of Common Prayer". This 1549 Prayer Book did not contain a rite for ordination. Because of the strong opposition he met from the more Catholic-minded of the Bishops. Cranmer dismissed the Bishops, with the exception of Nicholas Heath, from the Committee appointed to draw up a new rite of ordination. The Bill for the preparation of the new Ordinal came before Parliament in January 1550.
