A Filipina domestic helper who was caught with 1.8 kilograms of cocaine was allegedly told to swallow a portion of it before flying to Hong Kong. A source familiar with the investigation said that the person who allegedly sup- plied the illegal drugs also told the Filipina to swallow a small amount of the cocaine which was wrapped in plastic and what appeared to be brown paper. However, the domestic worker, aged 29, refused and put the packet in her waist, which airport authorities later found when she arrived in Hong Kong on Dec. 4. The Filipina appeared before Tsuen Wan Acting Principal Magistrate Cheang Kei- hong on March 26. During the hearing, the prosecutor said that, of the 2.229 kilos of powder confis- cated from the domestic worker, around 1.8 kilograms was cocaine. “This is a Court of First Instance case. Records showed that the defendant had 13 previous convictions, including 10 for theft and one for burglary. The judge said the incident happened on the morning of Nov. 26, 2014 after Ramos broke into a laboratory at PolyU in Hung Hom and carted off five laptop computers and a rucksack, all of which had a total worth of $44,327. He said Ramos, 36, was unemployed and earned $1,800 a month from collect- ing scrap paper and scrap metal. “On that day, he was to collect waste paper left behind by the students when he saw the computers inside the lab,” Judge Pang said. At around 1:07 p.m. that same day, Ramos sold three of the laptops to a sec- ond-hand dealer for $3,800 in Kimberly Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. However, they were spotted by an off-duty police officer, who informed his colleagues. The defendant boarded a taxi but the po- lice chased after him until they caught up with Ramos in Granville Road. The police found the rucksack and the $3,800 in his possession but he was not able to present his Hong Kong ID. Ramos’ lawyer said his client “was very drunk” that day.
