2/THE UBYSSEY February 14,1992 QUEER ISSUE CMTADIAI Try a day—could you imagine a lifetime? So you think you're pretty progressive, do you? Well, how about this challenge: the cover of this issue has been filled with some ofthe labels which lesbians, and bisexuals walk around with all ofthe time. Are you willing to take those labels on? Are you willing to walk into class or into the library, or to your parents' home for dinner, with "queer" emblazoned on your chest? Is this idea intimidating? What do you think it would feel like? What would other people think of you? Imagine it—you're queer. People make comments behind your back, or even worse, you are with your friends, and one of them tells a homophobic joke. Don't you just feel great? Or maybe it's Christmas time, and you're with your family. You've asked if you can bring your partner, who happens of the same sex. Your parents don't think it's right. It's not proper. They say, "Can't you change?" Are you afraid to walk through the parking lot? Nervous about walking past the Cheeze Factory? Remember the Fag-Bashing Bat? Worried about your grades if you wear that label in front of your prof? What about getting kicked out of your apartment? Losing your job? Can you imagine what it feels like to be invisible? Imagine that you're sitting in lit. class, and the prof is discussing love but only refers to "opposite-sex" relationships. Your textbooks never mention people like you. And what about the people who don't seem to hear you once they find out you're lesbian or gay - ever imagine having To a heterosexual majority: your entire life invalidated? February 14,1992 THE UBYSSEY/5 t* QUEER ISSUE 3 The evolution of the queer fight for acceptance by Brian Young VICTORIA(CUP)—On June 27,1969, one ofthe most significant and unrecognized riots in North American history hit the streets of New York. The Stonewall Riots represented the entry of gay MOM, JMP, 6MAF OUT OF IT? men and lesbians into the civil rights movement, and the beginning of an organized struggle by queer people i • f • ? WE'RE HERE!" to live lives free of harassment and brutality. The Stonewall Inn was an unassuming gay bar in Greenwich Village when the men in blue—sworn to serve and protect—raided it, arresting, roughing up and verbally abusing many ofthe patrons. The events of that night would have passed unno ticed except for one thing: the queers fought back, throwing bottles, yelling and screaming, and fighting hand-to-hand with the police. Gay men had never before gathered together in America to express the anger and bitterness they had all felt individually. People like those at the Stonewall have fought long and hard to change the way the straight population thinks of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals. Now there is a new militancy, a direct response to the unwilling ness of people in power to listen to the queer voice. "Straightification" ofthe gay image, in the name of some public image and the greater "good" called integration, marginalization of fringe groups is nothing but internalized within the gay community are homophobia.
