This book simply seeks to provide an overview of the great siege of commune-building within a loosely chronological and typological framework. If nothing else, the book in its notes and bibliography will point toward useful resources for those who would like to know more about the topic. Only the practical realities of the world of writing and publishing kept this volume from be­ ing a thousand pages long. The efforts of hundreds of individuals supported the 6os Communes Project and the writing of this book, and I thank all of them most sincere­ ly for their generous assistance. Heading the list are the former (some­ times ongoing) communitarians themselves, who provided time and hospitality-and sometimes food and lodging as well-for interviews about their communal experiences. Ramon Sender, the first resident at Morning Star Ranch, deserves special credit among the interviewees for helping me locate dozens of communal veterans (mainly in California) as well as for extensive and generous hospitality. Those who conducted the interviews did a heroic job; in particular, Deborah Altus, in her year of travel for interviewing, did far more work than the job required and pro­ duced an enormous pile of tape recordings and documents with great good energy. BLANK PAGE Introduction Communal societies have long been an American cultural fixture, with anywhere from dozens to hundreds of them operating at any given mo­ ment since the pioneers of Plockhoy's Commonwealth and the Labadists of Bohemia Manor took to the common life in the seventeenth century.1 Nothing in the American communal past, however, would have led any judicious observer to predict the incredible communal explosion that be­ gan during the 1960s. In a period of just a few years communal fever gripped the alienated youth of the United States-indeed, of the devel­ oped world-and thousands upon thousands of new communities were established throughout the land. The size and diversity of the new com­ munitarianism made accurate counting of communes and of their mem­ bers impossible, but the overall significance of the 1960s era (here defined as 1960 to 1975, inclusive) as a watershed in American communal history is undeniable. Those who have seen volume one of this history will find the present tome distinctly different in approach and in content from its predecessor. American communes active between 1900 and 1960 were few enough in number to be enumerated individually, and most of those that had been very visible are discussed (at least in brief) in that previous volume. With the 1960s era, however, the subject mushrooms. We are no longer dealing with communes numbering in the low hundreds but rather with thou­ sands-probably tens of thousands-of them, and an incredibly diverse lot at that. The best known (and certainly the subjects of the most media coverage) were the hippie communes, the countercultural encampments that thumbed their collective noses at conventional American society and were regarded both with fascination and with loathing by members of the very Establishment that they rejected.

Some Christians dismiss the sixties as a period of silliness. Other Christians, however, blame the decade for many of the ills that trouble contemporary America, even though the seeds of many of the sixties upheavals were sown during the seemingly placid fifties. Throughout the sixties, spiritually hungry seekers influenced both alternative and institutional streams of spirituality. Sixties spiritual values such as individualism, the valuing of experience over doctrine, the preference for anything new over anything old, the sacralization of the secular, and the use of drugs as a spiritual tool continue to have a profound influence on modern life and contemporary religion. The Jesus movement was one major Christian response to the revolutionary changes of the sixties. This movement’s contemporary music and more relaxed approach toward church are its major contributions to today’s ecclesiology. Though it was a turbulent and troubling time, the sixties forced many Americans to confront long-simmering issues such as race, gender, sexuality, war, authority, and patriotism. Anyone emerging today from a decades-long, Rip Van Winkle–like slumber (or even a Timothy Leary– like trip to the far side of the space-time continuum) might be forgiven for thinking he or she was still living in the 1960s.

    International Journal of Communications Law & Policy Special Issue Global Flow of Information, Autumn 2005 GOVERNING THE EGALITARIAN CORE OF THE INTERNET ∗ By Christoph Engel ∗∗ ABSTRACT Few would claim that regulators, or academics working on regulatory policy, have neglected the Internet. However, most of their work is attracted by the global character of the Internet. Admit- tedly, this is a serious challenge to regulation, but it is not the only, and probably not even the most disquieting one. In the regulatory discourse, short shrift is given to the fact that the Internet originated in the egalitarian culture of American university computer labs. Its architecture was shaped during that period. Up to the present day, many key functions for Internet management are held by people coming from that culture. This paper argues that the egalitarian challenge to Internet governance has been largely over- looked. The challenge is serious, but not unmanageable. Nevertheless, regulators must use appro- priate concepts to understand the challenge. A subfield of sociology, cultural theory, is particularly instrumental for that purpose. In order to address the challenge, regulators must use a set of gov- ernance tools that deviates considerably from standard regulatory responses. INTRODUCTION The Problem Regulators are not good at multi-tasking. Admittedly, no one would claim that regulators have neglected the Internet. After all, there is a flurry of regulatory activity all over the world, 1 and an almost intractable amount of academic work on Internet-related subjects. 2 Most of this work is driven by the global character of the Internet. Admittedly, this poses a serious challenge to regulation,3 but it is not the only one, and probably not even the most disquieting one.

While America was economically wealthy after the war, it still had to deal with extremely difficult social and cultural challenges. Due to these new aspects of life, there were increasing differences in both the interests and values of children and their parents, what we have learned to call the "generation gap". The "generational gap" between the youth culture and their parents meant a polarizing society, each hating and completely misunderstanding the other.. This eventually resulted in a highly political youth culture that was laterally opposed to the government. Through isolation, the counterculture began to develop new philosophies and new ways of thinking, and a huge part of that philosophy was the pursuit of a "Good Society", a utopian dream for world peace.

The criteria for determining who or what qualifies as subcultures, and the most effective ways to study them, are based on these assumptions. This project seeks to address these traditional modes of studying subcultures and discover ways in which their modification may lead to new understandings and ways of studying subcultures in the contemporary moment. This will be done by suggesting a change in the criteria of examining subcultures from that of deviance or resistance to identification with a collection of images, symbols, rituals, and narratives. The importance of this distinction is the ability to utilize the insights that studying subcultures can offer while avoiding the faults inherent in speaking for or at a subculture rather than with or from it. Beyond addressing theoretical concerns, this thesis aims to apply notions of subcultural theory to study the online community of Reddit, in particular, a subset known as r/trees–a virtual repository for those images, symbols, rituals, and narratives of cannabis subculture. R/trees illustrates the life and vibrancy of a unique subcultural entity, which to this point has evaded a cultural studies analysis. To that end, this project advocates for the importance of the cultural studies approach to analyzing cannabis subculture and further, to insert the findings of this study into that gap in the literature.

Both of these communes were highly influenced by the concept of Open Land, according to which anyone may freely live in a given space, particularly those individuals rejected or alienated by urban modernity. I examine the ways in which these communes related to and were shaped by their rural neighbours, as well as the local state, asserting the importance of the surrounding community in effecting events at each commune. I argue that positive relations with neighbours determined the continued viability of these communes, and that these positive relations in turn required a compromise of original founding principles including Open Land. I further uncover the changing perceptions rural people held of hippie communards, and contextualize the back-to-the-land ideal within broader American traditions of frontier settlement and reinvention. !ii Preface This thesis is entirely the original, unpublished, and independent work of the author, John
