Proudly sponsored by AUCKLAND TOWN HALL The Auckland Town Hall, one of New Zealand’s premier heritage buildings, re-opened on 14 December 2011 after extensive strengthening. This historic building on Queen Street, in downtown Auckland, is known for its original and ongoing use for Council meeting and functions, as well as for its famed Great Hall and separate Concert Chamber. The Town Hall and its surrounding context is highly protected as a ‘Category A’ heritage place in the city’s District Plan. Its interior was extensively restored from 1994–1997 for NZ$33 million, partially because the unreinforced masonry structure did not meet earthquake standards, especially as a gathering place. Auckland City Council determined that the building should be strengthened as part of an overall restoration programme. Various techniques were pioneered to reinforce the structure without substantially changing the heritage character of the building. In 2007, the exterior underwent some restoration work. This presentation describes the standards of strengthening adopted, the analysis and the strengthening systems used.
