TREASURERS REPORT: $10,030.50

EDITORS REPORT: Jack Martin has advised that he has produced his penultimate Clatter.

Allan smith distributed the Clatter along with the assistance of Phil Leach and Alan Harper, for the December/ January edition. There followed a general discussion on the availability to produce the Clatter In an electronic format, and all the advantages As the position of Editor is now vacant it is understood that Merle Grahame has volunteered to take up the post. Moved by Jim Cummings and seconded by Les Simmons that this be adopted. General discussion on the task of Clatter distribution and the associated costs Involved, which is normally about $1000.00 per month. It was suggested that Merle develop a template for the future magazines. Membership : Alan Harper advised that renewals continue to trickle in. Approximately 50% of have renewed to date. Moved Allan Smith Sec .Gordon Mitchell

WELFARE: Brian Robertson advises that he now has his driver’s licence back and is contemplating his bike license Look out for a “Brick”. We wish Terry Reily well as he goes about his chemo treatment. Ron Stanfield ,a long standing Member over many years is now in a Nursing Home and we all wish him well and has a quality of life, which he deserves.

EVENTS The position of the Ride Coordinator is open . Eight riders ventured to Kurrajong last weekend and the ride to Brooklyn is next weekend. The Club Calendar is up to date as published in the Clatter. Destination points should be published as any late starters or lost riders know where to proceed to. Also a safety issue.

GENERAL BUSINESS: The subject of the attendance numbers comparing to Illawarra was mentioned ,as the geographical centre of the Club was in fact the Baulkham Hills area . Where we have a number of active Members from the Northern and Eastern suburbs as well as South West Sydney, finding a suitable location for Club meetings never gets any easier, in a manner to cater for all of the Members.. Whereas the Illawarra Branch does not not have the challenge of traffic and long distances in the main. Paul Higgins advised that the current Committee cannot carry on indefinitely supporting the Club, the need for Members of the Branches to step forward and support the Club as a whole has never been so important. Why do so so many Members just sit on their hands and wait for “Somebody” else to lend a helping hand,as the Club has never ran by itself. Paul also suggested …That the Illawarra Branch “Go it alone” Kim Fleming advised that the time has come for a catalyst to change the structure of the Club. As a result there was a general discussion on both the advantages and disadvantages of Illawarra going alone. Jim Cummings enquired what if anything the Central West Branch should and the Sydney Committee will address this matter in due course with the Central West Members. The subject of LIfe Membership was again raised and the feeling of the Sydney Club was disappointing, as this Membership is not taken lightly therefore it would have been appropriate for the Nominees and their Endorsers to attend the AGM ,so that the Club knew something about their history in their Club years. Kim formally thanked Paul Higgins for his very active Membership and for all the very hard work he has done for the Club over the years . Paul has seen some very turbulent times and has handled his various Committee positions gracefully. Paul will be missed by any Member that He has been associated with and the CEMCCC membership as a whole. The Committee thanked Paul with a round of applause. The meeting closed at 8.51.pm.

Past Events: Tortoise Ride Saturday 19th November. A good turnout of 16 bikes, 13 on Historic plates, left Key Batteries for the ride to Stanwell Tops via Maddens Plains , Old Princes Hwy, Helensburgh and Otford. After the sightseeing was over a small group returned via the historic railway tunnels of Helensburgh which included viewing the partially excavated structures of the original Helensburgh railway station. (What more could you ask for on a Saturday? A motorcycle ride and a history lesson!)

Sunday Ride 20th November. 15 riders left Wollongong for a ride through Macquarie Pass-Fitzroy Falls-Moss Vale-Berrima-Bowral with a lunch stop at the Robertson Pie Shop. 8 of the bikes were Historic plated. Unfortunately our ride coincided with the I98 Convoy Day, this was unintentional on our part and made for difficult riding conditions at times. We’ll do our best to avoid clashing with this weekend in future

28 November Monday Off Road Day All modern bikes on this ride. This will be the last ride till March/April 2017 when the weather cools down.

Sunday Ride 11th December. 11 Riders left Key Batteries with a pickup at Dunmore, made a dozen for the ride through Berry and on to Kangaroo Valley for an early lunch stop at the pie shops. 9 of the bikes were on historic plates. It was good to see two members ride from Kurnell and three from the Bundeena area to join the ride. Riding conditions were excellent with the return journey via Fitzroy Falls, Robertson and down Macquarie Pass. Bikes of interest on the day was an automatic Honda 750/4, and the immaculate Honda’s of Peter Davey and visitor friend Greg Minton.

OCCASIONAL COMMENTS

It's late December as I write this, enough time to reflect on the year for the club and specifically the AGM, which could only be seen as a clarion call for change. If you weren't there and with a club membership of around 400 and about 30 at the AGM, chances are you weren't and you may not pick up the detail from the minute, but the AGM was dominated by the failure on first call to fill any of the key positions of the committee. It was clearly an embarrassing situation (we had 2 new members in attendance, what were they thinking?) where we as a club could fold and that's not just affecting Sydney based members but all members. The situation was saved (for this year) with a late call committee with basically the same team filling many roles as they have done for some time, but this is a committee that is tired of swapping positions and really needs a number of new people to step up. It's no use members complaining that the club is not going anywhere new when there is so little new blood on the committee. Everyone can make excuses as to why they can't commit to more activities in the club, but the club won't run itself. What is needed is perhaps some thinking outside the square as to how we operate and this was discussed at length at the committee meeting in early December, where we also had some representation from the Illawarra committee. I don't believe that the club needs to fold or shatter into component parts and have faith that that it can move forward as a whole, but it does need some changes to move forward. The greater Sydney area geographically, probably still has the numbers as far as members go, but it has the lowest participation rate and members anywhere south of the CBD tend to gravitate to the Illawarra branch. Sydney members complain of difficulty in travelling across the city, this has meant that in recent times the Sydney meetings held in the Rydalmere are attended mainly by members living in the north west of Sydney. Members from anywhere in the south of the CBD and from the Illawarra and Southern districts attend the Illawarra meetings and give Illawarra branch the largest attendance at meetings and a strong base. The Club constitution refers to club meetings, general and AGM, as having to be held in Sydney suburbs, it makes sense to me that the club should probably go to where the members are and relocate some or all of the meetings (whether it's just the AGM and or the regular monthly meetings and or the minimum 3 committee meetings is up for discussion) to a southern suburb of Sydney, thus being able to draw on a larger, different and perhaps more enthusiastic collection of members to take on roles in running the whole of the club. This is not to say that the Central West members could or should be excluded from being on the committee and I would encourage them to think about holding office, they have the rights to nominate and send proxies to the AGM if they can't attend the AGM. There is only a minimum of 3 committee meetings to be held each year and there is no reason why a lot of the business could not be conducted electronically. These are of course just my thoughts and may not reflect the views of other committee members, if you want to have a say in how your club is run, let your views be known to the committee or your branch committee.

In the shed lately I have working on a new acquisition a Kawasaki Z1000ST, this bike has very low kilometres but had been parked for at least 8 years without being started or the engine turned over. Prior to me seeing it the owners did fit the kickstart and turned over the engine, while it did turn over, I found it only had compression on 2 cylinders, the exhaust valves on 3 and 4 cylinders were very slightly bent. I think the most likely cause of this is that the valves had been open for a long period and frozen open, when the engine was turned over these have been hit by the pistons and bent. As well as the engine, the disc brake is frozen solid on the rear and the front brakes are spongy and need rebuilding. I have installed new valves after finding the inlet valves to have a fair bit of pitting, probably again caused by its extended layover. The coils are also a concern with both sets having huge cracks in the casings, but still at this stage putting out a good spark. Working on a large Japanese multi engine for the first time for something more than a tune up and oil change has been an experience, but not as difficult as I had imagined.

Out of my shed I have been taking classes learning some panel and welding skills at MotorRetro in Seven Hills. Now that TAFE seems to have gotten out of the role of training people in skills such as panel beating and welding, these guys (both ex TAFE teachers) have started the classes as part of their restoration business to help people gain the skills for their own restorations. Classes is possibly not the right term, but it's one they use, there is no formal class, just some one on one instruction and training before you are given a task to develop your own skills on either a standard piece before moving on to your own project. I really enjoy that it's all hands on and I can work on my own projects, the amount of workshop space and equipment is fantastic as is the level of skills these guys have. I took in my Dresda alloy petrol tank to remove the many dents it had, still a work in progress and I have had to call on them to tidy some of my efforts, but it's developing my skills that can be transferred to future projects. If you haven't heard of MotorRetro, then try this link http://www.throttleroll.com/motorretro-classes-workshop/

It's time to renew your membership if you haven't done so already, remember that once you are unfinancial your historic registrations may not be valid and you could be riding unregistered and uninsured which will cost you well over $1000 in fines and probably a lot more in case of an accident. Please don't post cash in the mail, I have had a couple of these and it’s a recipe for your mail not getting through to me. You can post me a cheque or Aust Post money order with your form or pay by direct deposit and either post me the details with your renewal form or scan and email renewal and payment details to me. Don't just pay electronically and expect me to pick up your payment, send in your form.

There is quite a bit of talk at the committee level of making the standard issue of the magazine electronic, there's a bit to be done before this could become a reality and there needs to be some provision for those members who do not have access to computer and the internet. As membership officer I can see there are quite a number of members that have not supplied an email address, whether this is just they don't want to provide that detail or they don't have access is unknown. What I would ask is that members email me your email so that I can update records and ensure I have correct details on record as these things change and typos occur when entering these details due to my fat fingers and sometimes illegible writing on forms.

David John Harman - always known as John

We lost our great mate John Harman in November 2016 after complications caused by his treatment for Leukaemia. One of our longest serving CEMCC members, and a founding member of the Illawarra Classic Club, John and his late wife Doris were wonderful advocates for the Classic car and bike movement in the Illawarra, always willing to help as office bearers or to assist others where possible. John’s great interest was in smaller capacity machines and he had one of the first BSA Bantams sold in Australia which he bought new. We will miss John’s good humour and knowledge gained over many years as a service station proprietor in Wollongong. Our deepest sympathy to John’s daughters Vicky & Wendy and their families, also a big thank you to many members who rode bikes, or turned up to his send-off.

The Ted Conran memorial trophy for the Illawarra Branch’s Club Man of the Year was present by Judy Conran presented to Jim Cummins. Jim has been much involved in club activities over the last year and is a great ambassador for the club leading rides, helping others organise events and taking part in many rides near and far. Jim always has time for new members and makes them feel welcome.

Best attended on weekend runs went to Mick Hockley, Mick has a diverse interest in motorcycling with a love for off-road on his KTM or enjoying faithfully restoring his Suzuki water bottle.

Wayne Martin another keen club member won the trophy for most attendances off our mid-week rides, not to mention his outstanding tea and coffee making skills at our meetings and his team work on the off-road rides.

Each of these three members not only have a passion for motorcycles they also are keen to help other members enjoy all aspects of motorcycling, it is members like this that make us a great club.
