Treasurer: Allan Smith reported the current balance is at $19,333.84. Events & Ride Paul Higgins reported. Rides are as scheduled in the clatter for next month. Report: Paul asked if there were any members that wanted to assist in this role, to make it known to him. The Orange Rally on the 19th February is upon us please register a.s.a.p. If you plan to attend. For those wishing to ride to Orange there will be a group leaving on Friday, Great weekend! Paul reminded those present of two upcoming rides, the first ride to Kurrajong on Sat 6th, for morning tea at the café opposite the Garden centre. Paul noted the restraunt seemed to be closed down on a recent visit, in this is the case an alternate venue in Kurrajong would be chosen. The second on Sun14th to Brooklyn lookout, then to the “Pie in the Sky café” for morning tea. March rides as published in the Clatter. Gordon Mitchell advised other rides as per Calendar, Gordon asked members who are prepared to be contacted for help in the event of another member breaking down on a ride to contact him for inclusion of contact details on a published list or enter the contact details on the website. Hopefully the Thursday ride south from the Deep-water motorboat club will be on as scheduled, questionable weather forecast. Meeting points for rides to be correctly identified on a list, to be published in the clatter for new members who are unfamiliar with our terms of reference. (E.g.: Ettamogha Macca’s = McDonalds car park on Windsor road, Rouse Hill, opposite the Ettamogha Hotel) Trevor Murray advised members that the Rylston Ramble is being organized for the last weekend of April, and is limited by the accommodation available at the hotel, details to be confirmed and published in the clatter. Regalia: Ray Gosling reported there had been minimal sales of club regalia; he also had a display of club summer shirts and caps. Permits Paul Rees not in attendance, Nil activity reported

MCNSW: Joe Vella not in attendance, Nil activity reported prior to his receipt/review of MCNSW mail. Library: Kim Fleming not in attendance Nil to report.

He reminded members to bring along any excess parts etc., they wished to swap or sell. Membership: Received a club membership resignation from Steven Day.

Welfare: Paul Higgins reported Brian Robinson is now at Home in convalescing after his accident, Michael McCartan advised he had seen Brian on a recent ride to the “pie in the sky café”, where Brian attended by car and made his way on site in a wheelchair due to his restricted leg movement after the accident (receiving Physiotherapy). Paul advised that Brian’s bike was written off as a result of the accident. Allan Smith advised that Frank Grace member, and owner of one of the clatter advertised business’s had passed away. The membership was advised that Eric Hinton had recently passed away.

General Business: The president Paul Higgins advised members that there was some concern amongst various other classic motorcycle and car club members he had spoken too on the following two points. 1) The logbook system was being seen as a cheap registration option for non-club members to join and use their vehicles for personal use. 2) The rolling 30-year age limit for classic vehicles was coming to a stage where the era of the initial “super bikes” would become eligible for classic membership, and similar inclusions for high tech performance cars.

1) Ray Leatherborough responded that the logbook system could definitely be seen as an option for people to join the club to attain cheap registration for their own personal use, and not operate their bike in the spirit of the club code of conduct, which is based on “concessional registration guide lines”. Paul Supported Ray and encouraged various members to debate points of interest at length and asked how we could possibly manage such situations. (Ongoing debate encouraged)

2) Paul mentioned that the club could cap at a date of manufacture, rather than a rolling 30-year cut off as other clubs had done. He asked if this should be considered as an option or not for our club. Various members spoke on what affect this may have on the future membership and longevity of the club, and what influence these bikes would possibly have being accepted into the club. (Ongoing debate encouraged)

3) It was also noted these two points of interest were raised in the editors section of the latest “Old Bike” magazine as a concern for other classic clubs. The editors section was read out to members, consideration and debate continues?

The Treasurer Allan Smith advised that the previous club treasurer had invested club funds of $10,000 in a fixed term deposit for 3 years, when it matured with an interest accumulation of $729.00. The $10,000.00 has been reinvested in a fixed term deposit for another 3 years. Allan Smith moved a motion that the interest accumulated be increased by $271.00 from club funds to a total of $1000.00. To be donated to the Cancer Research unit at Westmead Hospital, Seconded by Paul Higgins, carried unanimously by members in attendance. Technical: Nil items or issues raised. LETTER TO THE EDITOR.

The committee decision not to participate in the “modified vehicle trial”, on the basis that the club was not established to cater for modified type motorcycles, invoked some lively discussion at the November meeting in Sydney. In particular, the old contentious issue of the eligibility of the “café racers” from the late 50’s/early 60’s, such as Tritons, Tribsas etc, was raised.

I suspect that the café racers, mentioned above, were not at the forefront of the committee’s mind in reaching its decision. Perhaps, it was looking at the possible influx of highly modified machines that have little historical significance, as is often the case with, say, street rods.

As I understand it, the club has excluded the café racers from participation in the existing HCS, based on its interpretation of the RMS ruling, which states, “ Vehicles must be as close to original condition as possible, with NO alterations except for safety features such as seat belts and turn indicators or period accessories and options , if desired.” To this end, does a pre-unit triumph engine in a Norton wide-line frame satisfy the criteria?

There is no doubt that café racers have an important place in motorcycling history. It would be a pity if the club did not fully consider this in reviewing its decision, once the final details of the modified vehicle scheme is released. Hopefully, the committee’s concerns re the role of machine examiners, in inspecting machines for road safety, will be a non- issue, if the scheme is introduced as originally proposed- .i.e. All vehicles will require a “pink slip” and, depending on the modifications, an engineer’s certificate in accordance with RMS instructions, VSI 06.

The other important issue, that is not yet established, concerns the role of club officials in determining any other eligibility aspects of vehicles, apart from the road safety issues. For example, under the existing scheme, owners can obtain a pink slip, in lieu of the club inspection for road safety. However, a club official still needs to inspect the machine for HCS eligibility. What role will club officials have under the new trial?

Past Events: Tortoise Ride Saturday 16th January

Five club stalwarts toured the Illawarra for an afternoon ride. Perhaps the recent wet weather put potential riders off. These rides are always short and are tailored to the bikes that turn up. There is always a refreshment stop. Ride anything to this event, it’s the perfect situation for small bikes or bikes that are making a comeback from restoration or storage. Posted road speed is never more than 80kmh.

Sunday lunch Ride 31st January

Fifteen riders took a leisurely ride down the coast to Shoalhaven Heads for lunch at the local hotel. Seven riders travelled down from the southern region of Sydney, these included two visitors, friends of our members. There were almost equal numbers of modern versus historic registered bikes on the day, with equal honours going to four Suzukis, four BMWs, three Triumphs, two Harley Davidsons, one Honda and one Norton. Lunch was good, camaraderie excellent as usual, riders returned via selected routes, which included a highland tour through Kangaroo Valley and Macquarie Pass.

Mid-Week Ride Wednesday 3rd February

Twenty-Three bikes, 11 on club plates with John Baker on the Spider headed off from Key Batteries to Appin, then to Bulli, Helensburgh and Stanwell Park Beach for a bite to eat and a long chat. Great to see a good rollout of a wide range of motorcycles on our club events.

Programme: Nigel Whittaker, from Xtreme Fuel Systems, spoke to the club about various metal cleaning and finish systems they can offer club members. Steel Ball Burnishing / Mass Finishing, sometimes called “ball-burnishing,” burnishing produces smooth mirror-like finishes on surfaces ranging from matte to polished. In addition, as steel media presses on a part, the working action imparts compressive stress, and its surface becomes work-hardened. The process often can replace steel shot blasting as a work-hardening step. Parts processed with steel media have longer cycle lives and greater resistance to wear as a result of this compressive stress action.

Meeting closed: 9:05 PM. Secretary: Les Simons

VALE FRANK RACE

It is with a sad heart that I tell you that Frank passed away on Sunday 17/1/16. His dedication to the British bike industry and expertise with Norton’s will be sorely missed. He may be gone from our sight but will never be gone from our heart. Our family would like to thank everyone for their condolences and support during this difficult time.

It was always going to happen. Conceding to middle age could only mean one thing – I was going to buy a motorcycle. Not for me, though, waddling around the bike shop ogling at the latest superbike, my goal was to reclaim lost youth by purchasing the bike I owned as a boy.

And when I say boy, I mean it. For I am of an age that places me among the very last who could pass their test at 16 then legally ride a bike with any power output – and not have to wear a crash helmet. I remember to this day the buzz of turning up at school with my hair frizzed out at 90 degrees. How cool was that for any Lower Sixth upstart growing up in the early Seventies?

The bike of my dreams at the time was the . The problem was I couldn’t afford one; at about £150 for a largely clapped out example they were beyond my reach. But when a Thunderbird-ish looking Triumph emblazoned with “Bike of the Week, £99” appeared on the forecourt of Luton motorcycle shop Coburn & Hughes, the deal was as good as done

Mistaking “Bike of the Week” as a euphemism for “bargain”, I handed over the cash for what turned out to be a 1962 500cc Triumph 5TA Speed Twin. So began the ride of my life. Friends, girlfriends, good times, bad times – all, in some way or another, would become referenced in terms of my 5TA and the places it took me.

I only owned the bike for a couple of years before shoddily rebuilding the engine, which then promptly blew its barrels off, a common occurrence befalling any wannabe Triumph mechanic not in possession of the thin ring spanner needed to properly tighten the nuts between barrel and . By now an impoverished student, I decided to sell it to my local dealer, Sid Mularney. Sid was famous for three things; his Manx Norton TT racing machines, a workshop with a resident spanner-throwing poltergeist and driving a hard bargain. Consequently, I walked away miserable with just £22.50.

Fun and Interesting Facts about British Motorcycles

How the BSA Gold Star got its name.. Did you know… BSA’s famous Gold Star line of motorcycles was named after Wal Handley’s BSA 500cc Empire Star was awarded a gold star medal at the famous Brooklands Race track (with a top speed of just over 107 mph!).

HELL OF A DAY

There I was sitting at the bar staring at my drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next to me, grabs my drink and gulps it down in one swig.

"Well, whatcha' gonna do about it?" he says, menacingly, as I burst into tears.

"Come on, man," the biker says, "I didn't think you'd CRY. I can't stand to see a man crying."

"This is the worst day of my life," I say. "I'm a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don't have any insurance. I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my wife with another man...... and then my dog bit me. So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all, I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve; and then you show up and drink the whole damn thing!

But, Hell, enough about me, how are you doing?"
