Karen Bartlett rode in on her triumph Thruxton 900 to join hubby Andrew who had ridden his nicely presented Ducati Mike Harwood replica. In all 13 of us enjoyed, a nice Pizza lunch with appropriate refreshments re wines etc. We then left to ride home mostly by the shortest route. However, three riders followed by support vehicle took a short cut, which proved to be 80 – 100 ks. Longer than anticipated almost going to Yarrawonga then back through Rutherglen for fuel and home to Wodonga .A little excitement on the way home as one of those Italian V twin bikes that have a great electrical system decided it would develop one of its Gremlins and not recharge the battery, however with a couple of push starts the bike and rider made it safely home with only 9.5 volts left in the battery, are well more work to be done. A great day was had by all. Members attending this ride. Terry Gay, Peter & Jenny Stringfield, James & Vanesa Brown, Andrew & Karen Bartlett ,Allan Purcell, Kevin Hammond , Graeme & Evelyn Male.

Ride report by Graeme Male., Sunday 12/07/2015. The weather was not good so it was decided to tin top to Kevin Hammond’s, nine of us left the Causeway shortly after 10.00am.after deciding to travel via Beechworth stopping of for coffee and a chit chat, then off to Hammo’s, it was quite visible by the large amount of ice on the sides of the road through the Gap that a large hail storm had hit the area late yesterday. We arrived at Hammo’s and were greeted with hot scones. As the weather was RS, the festivities were held on the Veranda with tables set up under an outdoor gas heater we were joined by two more members. We ventured out to Kev’s. Shed and perused Kev’s very neat shed, to our dismay a trail of blood was seen on the floor, Kev. Explained that the previous day he had been tiding up the shed when a loud speaker hanging on the wall when it became detached from its hanging position hit him on the head. Kev. Said it bloody hurt and ended with a trip to Hospital and had four staples applied to the wound. Kath & Kerry served a great lunch of soup, pasta, salad followed by deserts. Topped off with coffee it was a very good day. Members attending ,Roger McGregor , Maugan Redden, Elsie Romey, Roy Whitehouse, Phil Greskie ,Graeme Male , Evelyn Male, Vicki Maloney, Kevin Hammond , Dave Sinclair . .

Americans are crazy about ethanol. Most of their fuel seems to have at least 10% ethanol and theRenewable Fuels Association will have a huge presence at next weekend’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the largest in the world. They will be providing free ethanol giveaways and free T-shirts at the 2014 Sturgis Buffalo Chip bar at the rally in an effort to convert riders to the natural juice. But is ethanol really any good for your bike? While the odd dose of ethanol is ok for most bikes and certainly fine for American bikes on a more regular basis, it may cause long-term damage to most others. Ethanol is a type of alcohol produced by fermentation of crops such as sugarcane or grain. In Australia, ethanol content in unleaded fuel is limited to 10% (E10) but some countries use 85% or even higher in South America. E10 is becoming more prevalent throughout Australian service stations and NSW service stations even have to stock a minimum requirement of the fuel. According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, only post-1986 bikes and ATVs made by BMW, Harley, Polaris and Victory can safely use E10. No Japanese bikes and no Piaggio products can use it. The FCAI doesn’t mention other brands, but it can be assumed ethanol blends are not suitable. Ethanol doesn’t work with carburettors or mechanical fuel injection. It is also a solvent which attacks metallic and rubber-based fuel lines, and has an affinity to water that can cause steel fuel tanks to rust. But one of the confusing things for riders is the octane rating. (Octane is a measure of a fuel’s ability to resist engine knocking or pinging which is an uncontrolled burn in the engine that can cause damage. Higher octane fuels resist knocking.) Most E10 in Australia is rated at 95 RON which seems like it could be suitable for bikes that require that higher octane rating. (In America it has a lot lower RON ratings as their highest RON fuel is only 91.) But RACQ executive manager technical and safety policy, Steve Spalding, warns that ethanol- blended, higher-octane fuels may not necessarily meet the correct fuel requirements for a vehicle designated to run on PULP. While the RON may be high enough, there is another property in fuel, called Motor Octane Number (MON), which is rarely specified on the bowser. MON is usually about 10 numbers lower than RON, so a MON of 85 would be ok for a bike rated at 95 RON. However, ethanol fuels have much lower MON numbers than their RON which could be too low for your bike. Either ask the service/gas station for the MON rating or fill up non-ethanol premium unleaded fuel of 95 RON or higher. It is always best to have a higher octane rating than a lower one even though modern engine management systems have knock sensors that can handle lower octane. If there is no choice but to fill up with ethanol fuel, make sure your next fill is with a high-octane fuel. The RFA will be telling riders that ethanol lowers gas/fuel prices, furthers America’s energy security, and revitalises rural America. However, even those debates are far from definitive. We won’t begin to tackle the environmental concerns which are not proven anyway, but we do believe it is not doing your hip pocket any favours, even though E10 is usually a few cents cheaper. There is about 3% less energy content in a litre of E10 compared with unleaded fuel which means your engine performance and fuel economy will be 3% worse, or to put it another way, your range will be limited by 3%. The price of E10 would need to be at least 3% less than ULP for riders to even break even on the fill. The SMG appear to be "chopping and changing" a bit, as the following meeting minutes extracts suggest. Their initial intention as stated at the meeting in November was to "discuss possible changes to rules and regulations for historic vehicle registration and usage in NSW". One of the three resolutions at this meting was: “The delegates advocated the introduction of a “M” plate scheme with 90 day log books as currently proposed and the introduction of the 45/90 Log Book system to the Conditional Registration Scheme for historic vehicles in NSW”.

At the SMG Jan 2015 meeting it was decided: "Initially our priority is to support the M plate scheme with its authorised modifications for historic and classic vehicles, and in the long term push for the introduction of log books. By a show of hands a significant majority of delegates supported this course of action"

At the April meeting it was reported that the push for plates was being sidelined in favour of a push for getting a log book scheme up whether the vehicle was original or not.

July meeting it was reported: The Chairman then introduced Alan Hay who provided an update on progress toward the implementation of a new scheme for registration of vehicles over 30 years old and answered questions from the floor. As was anticipated at the last meeting, the proposed new scheme offers log-book registration for vehicles over 30 years of age regardless of originality. Alan Hay confirmed that the existing HCRS (H-plate scheme) will remain in place unaltered.

As I see it all of the above proposals are about some change to the registration of historic vehicles. For example, take someone who has an unmodified vehicle registered under the existing HCRS. Will they be able to access the proposed log scheme under HCRS, or will they need to surrender their HCRS registration and take out registration under the proposed new scheme?

If as stated, the proposed scheme is " a new , independent and SEPARATE log book scheme", well and good. But, let's not muddy the waters by using the term "historic". The vehicles may well, for the most part, be over 30 years of age, depending on the extent of modifications, but as modified vehicles do they still retain the right to be referred to as "historic"? ______

TELSTRA needed to hire a team of telephone pole installers for the Stuart Highway, and McMurray the boss, had to choose between a couple of rough looking Aussie guys from Port Pirie and two hefty Irishmen.

So the boss met both teams and said. "Here's what we'll do. Each team will be installing poles out on the new road for a day. The team that installs the most poles gets the job."

Both teams headed right out. At end of the shift, the two Port Pirie guys came back and the boss asked them how many they had installed.

They said that it was tough going, but they'd put in twelve.

Forty-five minutes later, the Irish team came back in and they were totally exhausted.

The boss asked. "Well, how many poles did you guys install?"

Mick, the team leader, wiped his brow and sighed. "We got three in."

"The boss gasped. "Three ! Those two Port Pirie guys put in twelve!"

"Yeah," said Mick. " But you should see how much they left sticking out of the ground!
