And seeing as his Cicero series is one of my all time fav reads You are going to need a lot of zeros after the decimal point before you reach the percentage of representation those embody. Whilst the subject matter — Conclave an assembly of cardinals for the election of a pope is something I knew very little about other than the iconic chimneys emitting either black or white smoke! John Boyne calls this thriller about the dirty doings around selecting a new pope fast-paced but silly. The author, Robert Harris, was given the privilege of visiting the locations that are permanently closed to the public to help him in his research of this book. Cardinal Jacopo Lomeli has been contemplating retirement to peaceful meditation and study for several years now, but the Pope insists that he still needs him at the Vatican. My first Harris book. The men that litter this text are some of the most faithful and it was an interesting insight to how their religion was their life work and also the saviour of it. It kept me reading to get to the twist. What puzzled me from the outset was how conventional the book seemed, but of course Harris is a master in subverting torpedoing? Counter intuitively, a 1 in the number line for that publisher during those years meant a later printing. Also, I would suggest, because his subjects have mostly been comfortably in the past, In addition to several books set in ancient Rome, he has written about the turn-of-the-century Dreyfus case An Officer and a Spy , the Bletchley cryptological center in WW2 Enigma , and an alternate history Fatherland in which the Germans have won the war. I felt like I was in the middle of the Conclave and actually meeting and greeting the other Cardinals, meditating, plotting and participating in history. Lomeli uncovers great issues with two of the front runners, whose power dwindles as the Dean uses the Constitution to keep the Conclave on track. John Boyne calls this thriller about the dirty doings around selecting a new pope fast-paced but silly.

    POMPEII & NAPLES BAY: ANCIENT ROMAN WATER SUPPLIES & WATER USE REPORT OF FIELD OBSERVATIONS ‐ SEPTEMBER 2016 Wayne Lorenz i PREFACE The Wright Paleohydrological Institute (WPI) has been researching the Aqua Augusta, the ancient Roman aqueduct that served the Naples Bay region of Italy, including the ancient City of Pompeii, and water use in the city. A few facts regarding the aqueduct and related water systems provide some background to this report. First, ancient Pompeii can justifiably be identified as the most famous archaeological site in the world (Berry, 2007), likely due to its preservation under about 3 to 12 meters (10 to 40 feet) of volcanic ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. It was here that the modern study of “archaeology” began when the city started to be unearthed over 250 years ago. It is interesting to note that Pompeii is about 75 percent excavated and has revealed many unique details of Roman culture and technology. The archaeological areas of Pompeii, (as well as Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata) were listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1997. The historic center of Naples is also a UNESCO site. The engineering and construction of the Aqua Augusta (also known as the Serino Aqueduct) provided a fresh water supply to communities and fostered economic development in the Naples Bay region during the first century A.D. The aqueduct supplied Pompeii and at least 9 other distinct communities, plus multiple villas, in the Bay of Naples through a system of ten side branches. This seems to have been the most complex single aqueduct ever built by the Romans (Keenan-Jones, 2010).

The streets were always lively with shining chariots and bright red trappings; the open-air theaters rocked with laughing crowds; sham battles and athletic sports were free for the asking in the great stadium. Once a year the Caesar visited the pleasure city and the fireworks lasted for days; the sacrifices in the Forum were better than a show. But Tito saw none of these things. He was blind—had been blind from birth. He was known to everyone in the poorer quarters. But no one could say how old he was, no one remembered his parents, no one could tell where he came from. Bimbo was another mystery. As long as people could remember seeing Tito—about twelve or thirteen years—they had seen Bimbo. Bimbo had never left his side. He was not only dog, but nurse, pillow, playmate, mother and father to Tito. Did I say Bimbo never left his master? (Perhaps I had better say comrade, for if anyone was the master, it was Bimbo.) Executive summary of the report Soon after the collapse of the Schola Armaturarum, UNESCO carried out several missions, involving ICOMOS and UNESCO experts, at the sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata, specifically on 2-4 December 2010 and 10 – 13 January 2011, on 7-10 January 2013 and 8-12 November 2014. These inspections led to the formulation of a set of recommendations, which have ultimately been summarised in decision 39 COM 7B, adopted at the 39th meeting of the World Heritage Committee, to which this report is a reply. Over the years, many steps forward have been made in the conservation and management of the property. Regarding the Grande Progetto Pompeii (Great Pompeii Project), the State Party has ensured its continuation with a further European financing of 45 M€ and by maintaining the General Project Management organisation and the Great Pompeii Unit until 31 December 2019. A further two items of funding have been received: 40 M€ from the Italian government and 75 M€ from the Special Superintendency of Pompeii, which has been granted financial, administrative and management autonomy. The more recent inspection by UNESCO/ICOMOS identified 5 buildings at risk in the site of Pompeii: Casa dei Casti Amanti, Casa delle Nozze d’argento, Schola Armaturarum, Casa di Trebius Valens and Casa dei Ceii. Conservation interventions were then planned for all these buildings, which, to date, are either still underway or have been completed, or which will soon start. Almost all the legal problems that prevented the start of the works have been solved and now it will be possible to carry out the safety works on and restore the structures of the Schola Armaturarum; open the Antiquarium to the public; and continue the improvement works on the Casina dell’Aquila.

    Book of the Week V2: A Novel of WWII by Robert Harris Book Review by Eddie Keith V2 is a 2020 novel by British author Robert Harris, one of the leading historical novelists of our time. He is a prolific author who has written novels from those set in ancient times, such as Pompeii and the Cicero trilogy, to those set in WWII and after. Several of his books have been made into movies, including Fatherland (my personal favorite of his books) and Enigma, both set in WWII. Although the novels by Harris, who began his career as a BBC journalist, are fiction, each is well- researched and has a sound historical basis. Though set in WWII, a momentous and difficult time for England, the book is relevant today for a couple of themes. First, it demonstrates the contributions made by women during WWII, particularly those in England. (His previous book Enigma, about the cracking of the German code by British intelligence, featured a similar theme.) Given the recent focus on the contributions of women and minority groups to significant historical events, though fiction, the novel highlights a critical role women played in the Allies’ victory in Europe. Secondly, V2 is about the beginning of the Space Age with the first use of ballistic rockets. Since we are in the 50th anniversary period of the Apollo program and landings on the moon, as well as the recent development of new rockets and a focus by the US and other nations on returning to the moon, it’s timely. The book features as a main character Wernher Von Braun, who became the father of the US space program.
