St Bartholomew the Great is the oldest extant place of worship in London. The fact that the building has survived nearly a thousand years despite the ravages of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, the Great Fire of London and near misses from the bombs of two world wars is remarkable. Founded in 1123, the Priory church is situated at the heart of the Smithfield area, with its meat market, hospital, pubs and restaurants.

Any real choral tradition for St. Bartholomew the Great began with the Victorian restoration of the church.
