Ringmasterssweden Amarcord Dear a cappella fans, amarcord presents We always pledged that the a cappella Festival would take place this year in some form or other. And even if we’d originally hoped for it to be a more extensive, more shared experience than is cur- rently possible, the 2021 festival will still deliver a broad and extraordinarily uplifting kaleidoscope of vocal music! Together with us members of amarcord, the ensembles VOXID from Leipzig, LaLeLu from Hamburg, and the German Gents from Berlin will be giving a series of a cappella performances by German groups that couldn’t be more different. You can look forward to consummate polyphony from the Renaissance, romantic songs and charming close-harmony sing- ing, as well as sassy comedy and sophisticated vocal pop. We’re particularly delighted that two ensembles from the far reaches of Europe – the barbershop world champions Ringmasters from Sweden and the up-and-coming Renaissance quartet Cantoría from Spain – will also be contributing their qualities and traditions, hence bringing a cappella from abroad to the 2021 festival. The ensembles Ordinarius from the heart of South America, Anúna from Ireland (albeit with a highly international line-up), and Musica Univeralis (which brings together singers from France, Belgium and Germany) are, to our regret and theirs, currently unable to perform or travel – but at least they’ve been firmly scheduled for next year’s festival. In our singing, INTERnatIONAL we intend to convey as much enthusiasm and confidence to them as we do to all the young compe- tition entrants whom we look forward to hearing in our International a cappella Contest next year. festivalOF VOCAL MUSIC LEIPZIG We hope very much that you and all the participating artists enjoy a string of wonderful concerts. We’re determined to keep the (a cappella) music playing – so please keep coming back for more! April 30-May 9 2021 As for us, we’re looking forward to every single minute! It incorporates listings from the work of Sydney Robinson Charles in Josquin des Prez: A Guide to Research (Garland Composer Resource Manuals, 1983) and Peter Urquhart in The Josquin Companion (ed. This work has also used the following publications already incorporated in the three cited discographies. The 78rpm and early LP eras were covered in discographic format by The Gramophone Shop Encyclopedia of Recorded Music (three editions, 1936, 1942, 1948) and The World’s Encyclopaedia of Recorded Music (three volumes, 1952, 1953, 1957). amarcord Wolfram Lattke • Martin Lattke • Frank Ozimek • Daniel Knauft • Holger Krause Sunday Concert Series: German Vocal Quintet amarcord Sings Romantic and World Music This Sunday, April 3, the Gardner Museumʼs Sunday Concert Series welcomes renowned German vocal quintet amarcord to MassArtʼs Pozen Center for an afternoon of a cappella song. @the gardner caught up with bass Daniel Knauft, a founding member of amarcord, by phone from Stuttgart, Germany, to ask a few questions about the group and the upcoming performance. amarcord has been singing together for nearly two decades now—in fact, 2012 will mark your twentieth anniversary. How did the group get its start? We first met as choirboys in the St. Thomas Boys Choir (or Thomanerchor) in Leipzig, where we all sang together from the age of nine to eighteen. The choir was made famous by Johann Sebastian Bach [Bach served as choir director from 1723-1750 and is buried in the churchyard], and his spirit is all around. We grew up performing Bach works by heart. You should also bear in mind that this was East Germany in the 1980s, on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Imagine what the music of Bach meant to people who werenʼt allowed to live their faith or travel where they wanted. In that atmosphere, protected by the work of Bach, we grew up pretty freely, touring to West Germany and Japan, among other places. Of course, as children you take this for granted, but the older you get the more you realize how special it was. We formed this group in 1992, when the oldest among us was aging out of the choir but we didnʼt want to stop singing together.

SILENT NIGHT SSAATB, unaccompanied WW1893 arr. Jēkabsone SILENT NIGHT SSAATB Arranged by Laura Jēkabsone About the Work Franz Xaver Gruber’s Silent Night was included in the repertoire of a cappella group Latvian Voices at the end of 2018, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the song. The idea to work on this piece’s arrangement arose already at the end of 2017, returning home from the Latvian Voices concert tour. In complete silence, I realized that the first bars of this song was playing in my head, again and again, so I sat down at the piano and started to write it down. Arranging this popular Christmas melody, I deviate from the song’s classical sound, dressing it in close harmony chords. -Laura Jēkabsone Silent Night Silent night, holy night! Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright Son of God, love’s pure light, round yon virgin mother and child! radiant, beams from thy holy face Holy infant, so tender and mild, with the dawn of redeeming grace, sleep in heavenly peace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, sleep in heavenly peace. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth! Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight: glories stream from heaven afar, heav’nly hosts sing, “Alleluia! Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born!” About the Arranger Laura Jēkabsone (1985) is a Latvian composer, singer, conductor, vocal coach, and artistic director and singer in the vocal group Latvian Voices. Laura graduated from Jāzeps Mediņš Riga Music High School and continued her studies at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, where in 2009 she received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education.
