Some people have said love is the universal language. And while the residents of GTMO seemed to be after the same language during and * weekendspeaking leading this up to Valentines Day, MWR promoted AL a variety of events to celebrate the day of love. The Valentines Day Fun Run kicked the weekend off bright and early Saturday morning with a five km run that drew 27 people out of their beds before 6:30 a.m. "Running is good for the heart," said Karissa Sandstrom, fitness director, "So the fun run was perfect for this month and for Valentines Day. Runners from all over the base came out, including Navbase and JTF. These fun runs are used to promote the idea that exercise is very good for the heart; it is perfect for your body period." ' According to Jessica Carroll, Valentines Day 2005 was celebrated in high style with several dinners and dances. "To celebrate Valentines Day this year, MWR Clubs offered many options for people to choose from," she said. "On Saturday night, the Bayview Restaurant hosted a romantic Valentines Dinner where many couples shared a delicious surf and turf dinner, champagne, and an exquisite dessert. All the ladies were handed a rose as a special treat." Meanwhile, the Windjammer Bar hosted a Red Party, complete with a contest for best-dressed male, female, and couple. Flowers were given to attendees who also enjoyed complementary hors d'ouvres. Many people came dressed in their best red outfits and partied the night away. On Sunday afternoon, love gave way to carnage of the paintball variety as MWR hosted the 'Valentines Day Massacre' paintball tournament. Four teams showed up to see which was the best at throwing paint across the field, which was held at the Cooper Field Sports Complex. According to Craig Basel, MWR director, the event was sponsored to generate interest in paintball and to help relieve stress.
