  • Political Entertainment Media and the Elaboration Likelihood Model
Political Entertainment Media and the Elaboration Likelihood Model: A Focus on the Roles of Motivation and Ability Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Heather Lyn LaMarre, MPA, MA Graduate Program in Communication The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: R. Lance Holbert, Advisor David Ewoldsen Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick Michael McCluskey Copyright by Heather Lyn LaMarre 2009 Abstract This dissertation extends the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to the study of political communication. In particular, the project focuses on the role of ability and motivation, relative to contact with a variety of political entertainment media messages, on cognitive elaborations. Two studies were conducted to examine these political entertainment processes and effects. The first study was a 2 (ability: low, high) x 2 (media stimuli: The Daily Show, Anderson Cooper 360o) between-subjects design that examined individual-level cognitive elaboration and attitudes about the AIG executive bonus scandal involving government bailout funds. The second study was a 2 (motivation: high, low) x 2 (media stimuli: Sicko, Sicko and An American Carol) between-subjects design that examined individual-level cognitive elaboration and attitudes concerning nationalized healthcare. Results replicated traditional ELM findings. Ability and motivation had direct effects on individual-level elaboration. The main effects of ability and motivation were also found for issue-relevant and positively valenced thoughts. Message directly influenced individual-level elaborations, including total and issue-relevant thoughts. Additionally, interactions between message and ability were found for source credibility, counter-arguments, and media engagement.

  • Smith and Choueiti Gender Inequality in '08 Films
1 Gender Inequality in Cinematic Content? A Look at Females On Screen & Behind-the-Camera in Top-Grossing 2008 Films Stacy L. Smith, PhD. & Marc Choueiti Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism University of Southern California 3502 Watt Way, Suite 222 Los Angeles, CA 90089 [email protected] Summary This study examined the gender of all speaking characters and behind-the-scenes employees on the 100 top-grossing fictional films in 2008. A total of 4,370 speaking characters were evaluated and 1,227 above-the-line personnel. In addition to prevalence, we assessed the hypersexualization of on screen characters across the 100 movies. Below are the study’s main findings. 32.8 percent of speaking characters were female. Put differently, a ratio of roughly 2 males to every one female was observed across the 100 top-grossing films. Though still grossly imbalanced given that females represent over half of the U.S. population, this is the highest percentage of females in film we have witnessed across multiple studies. The presence of women working behind-the-camera is still abysmal. Only, 8% of directors, 13.6% of writers, and 19.1% of producers are female. This calculates to a ratio of 4.90 males to every one female. Films with female directors, writers, and producers were associated with a higher number of girls and women on screen than were films with only males in these gate-keeping positions. To illustrate, the percentage of female characters jumps 14.3% when one or more female screenwriters were involved in penning the script.

  • Dangerously Free: Outlaws and Nation-Making in Literature of the Indian Territory
DANGEROUSLY FREE: OUTLAWS AND NATION-MAKING IN LITERATURE OF THE INDIAN TERRITORY by Jenna Hunnef A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Jenna Hunnef 2016 Dangerously Free: Outlaws and Nation-Making in Literature of the Indian Territory Jenna Hunnef Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2016 Abstract In this dissertation, I examine how literary representations of outlaws and outlawry have contributed to the shaping of national identity in the United States. I analyze a series of texts set in the former Indian Territory (now part of the state of Oklahoma) for traces of what I call “outlaw rhetorics,” that is, the political expression in literature of marginalized realities and competing visions of nationhood. Outlaw rhetorics elicit new ways to think the nation differently—to imagine the nation otherwise; as such, I demonstrate that outlaw narratives are as capable of challenging the nation’s claims to territorial or imaginative title as they are of asserting them. Borrowing from Abenaki scholar Lisa Brooks’s definition of “nation” as “the multifaceted, lived experience of families who gather in particular places,” this dissertation draws an analogous relationship between outlaws and domestic spaces wherein they are both considered simultaneously exempt from and constitutive of civic life. In the same way that the outlaw’s alternately celebrated and marginal status endows him or her with the power to support and eschew the stories a nation tells about itself, so the liminality and centrality of domestic life have proven effective as a means of consolidating and dissenting from the status quo of the nation-state.

  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

When a Midwest town learns that a corrupt railroad baron has captured the deeds to their homesteads without their knowledge, a group of young ranchers join forces to take back what is rightfully theirs. In the course of their vendetta, they will become the American Outlaw of the biggest manhunt in the history of the Old West and, as their fame grows, so will the legend of their leader, American Outlaw young outlaw by the name of American Outlaw James. But I was expecting to at least have a fun time, even if it was another film that portrayed real-life American Outlaw guys as the "heroes" of the movie. I'm not sure why, but this film was just bland most of the time, and the actors despite some talented ones in the parts just seemed to walk through the performances, American Outlaw if they were simply trying to just get the whole thing over with. Even the versatile Timothy Dalton seemed to be at a lost as to what to do. And the characters themselves were American Outlaw. By the end of the film, we still knew nothing about any of them. I like to have at least some understanding of the characters in a film. Whether they're the good guys or the bad guys, at least give me something about them to understand, sympathize with, or relate to.

  • Christ Mass Carols Presented December 5, 12, & 19, 2004 Jason Allen Anderson, Presenter
Christ Mass Carols Presented December 5, 12, & 19, 2004 Jason Allen Anderson, presenter A three-week series exploring the histories of our favorite Christmas hymns, carols, and spirituals. PREFATORY REMARKS From the start of the holiday shopping season through Christmas Eve, you will hear on average, the same 25 holiday songs about 700 times. Sound odd? Well, who wants to hear “Once in Royal David’s city” over the audio system at The Gap? No one. But they do want to hear “Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night.” Go figure. What is a carol? Carol is derived from the Middle English carole and was originally a short, choral dance. The subject matter of carols goes well beyond Christmas. There are New Year, Epiphany, Holy Week, Easter, Summer, Spring, Harvest, and Winter carols. The trouble is, we just don’t like to hear those much! Our three-week journey begins with pre-Victorian Christmas carols (12/5), continues with Victorian carols (12/12), and ends with distinctly American carols (12/19). If you enjoy this, let me know. If there are parts that just don’t work for you, let me know that as well. If I mention a term with which you’re not familiar, pop up your hand and ask me to explain. PRE-VICTORIAN CAROLS Until the Puritan revolution in England, Christmas was not simply a single feast day in the church year, but a season spanning from Christmas Day to the Feast of the Epiphany (the famous 12 Days of Christmas). 12 Days of celebration required many carols, most of which were passed on orally.
