Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform. -

18 LC 117 0565 Senate Resolution 1124 By: Senator Harbison of the 15th A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing and honoring the valiant service of the Special Forces soldiers who were sent 2 to Afghanistan in the immediate aftermath of September 11; and for other purposes. 3 WHEREAS, a 12-man team of Special Forces soldiers from Fort Campbell belonging to 4 Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) 595 were sent to Afghanistan immediately following 5 the attacks on September 11, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, the 12 men were: MAJ (Former) Mark Nutsch; CW4(R) Robert Pennington; 7 MSG(R) Paul Evans; MSG(R) Andy Marchal; SFC(R) Steve Kofron; SGM(R) Mike Elmore; 8 MSG(R) Chad J.; MSG Pete W.; SFC(R) Bill Bennett (KIA, Iraq-2003); MSG(R) Steve B.; 9 SGM(R) Vincent Makela; and SFC(R) William Summers; and 10 WHEREAS, these valiant soldiers, known as the Green Berets, were given a two-part 11 mission: to work together with the Afghan Northern Alliance to hunt down those behind the 12 September 11 attacks and to destroy the Taliban regime; and 13 WHEREAS, Senior Chief Warrant Officer Robert Pennington served on the team led by 14 Mark Nutsch that is depicted in the film 12 Strong, which highlights the bravery, 15 brotherhood, and faith of these down-to-earth men; and 16 WHEREAS, in 12 Strong, the audience will see all the elements of the Green Berets that 17 Robert Pennington loves so much: the brotherhood, the teaching, the bravery, and the faith 18 to stand in the face of evil and liberate the oppressed; and 19 WHEREAS, Special Forces soldiers are men of unassuming greatness, the only servicemen 20 to train in unconventional warfare, who train, laugh, eat, and cry with indigenous forces for 21 three to five months or even three to five years, while they build up to prepare for a fight and 22 assist in war; and S. -

Who Was Solomon Northup? 1808: Born in Minerva, NewYork Son of former slave, Mintus Northup; Northup's mother is unknown. 1829: Married Anne Hampton, a free black woman. They had three children. Solomon was a farmer, a rafter on the Lake Champlain Canal, and a popular local fiddler. What Happened to Solomon Northup? Met two circus performers who said they needed a fiddler for engagements inWashington, D.C. Traveled south with the two men. Didn't tell his wife where he was going (she was out of town); he expected to be back by the time his family returned. Poisoned by the two men during an evening of social drinking inWashington, D.C. Became ill; he was taken to his room where the two men robbed him and took his free papers; he vaguely remembered the transfer from the hotel but passed out. What Happened…? • Awoke in chains in a "slave pen" in Washington, D.C., owned by infamous slave dealer, James Birch. (Note: A slave pen were where (Note:a slave pen was where slaves were warehoused before being transported to market) • Transported by sea with other slaves to the New Orleans slave market. • Sold first toWilliam Prince Ford, a cotton plantation owner. • Ford treated Northup with respect due to Northup's many skills, business acumen and initiative. • After six months Ford, needing money, sold Northup to Edwin Epps. Life on the Plantation Edwin Epps was Northup’s master for eight of his 12 years a slave. -

Houston Æ Gianfranco Walsh Received: 13 October 2006 / Accepted: 11 December 2006 / Published online: 27 March 2007 Ó Springer-Verlag 2007 Abstract Introduction Producing and marketing motion pictures is notoriously risky, with only three out of ten movies breaking even and one becoming profitable at the box office. Extending knowledge on the factors that influence a movie’s box-office and on the interrelations between these factors can be seen as major contribution to aid in lowering the number of failures in the motion picture industry. The major aim of this study is to distinguish direct and indirect effects between potential success drivers and motion picture success by understanding the interrelationships among different determinants of movie success. Methods Hypotheses are developed with regard to the relationships among a number of factors that have been shown to impact motion-picture box office as well as movie profitability. Applying path analysis, which allows a simultaneous testing of factor interrelations, the hypotheses are subsequently tested against a sample of 331 movies. Results and conclusion The factors considered in the analysis explain a remarkable amount of a movie’s success. The findings improve the movie industry’s understanding of motion picture success because for the first time interrelationships between the var- ious factors are considered, which enables the separation of direct and indirect (i.e., Communicated by Ralf Ewert.
