Parish News Issue Four 2012

Chairman’s Report

Are you as disappointed as I am when you see litter and other rubbish abandoned in our Parish? Have you ever wondered just how much it costs the local taxpayer to clear up rubbish within the Guildford Borough area?

For the current financial year there is a street cleaning budget of 1.975 million pounds. Just think how much this budget could be reduced if people were considerate and took their rubbish home or disposed of unwanted items in a legal and environmentally friendly way?

The core duties untaken by the cleansing department includes:

• Removing litter from the public highway, some 640 miles of carriageway (the same distance from London to Salzburg in Austria), in an area of 106 square miles.

• Emptying approximately 670 litter bins and 360 “Dog” bins on a reg- ular basis.

• Removing fly tips: In 2011-2012 there were 1084 reported Fly tips cleared; that is 20 a week!

• Graffiti and chewing gum removal.

Last year over 2,475 tonnes of litter, fly tips, sweepings, bin contents and leaves were collected. This is the equivalent weight of 618 adult Indian elephants!

It is worrying to see just what it costs to keep our environment clean and tidy. The cleansing team are not perfect, but given the circumstances they do a terrific job. If we all remember to take our litter home and dispose of it correctly, we would be helping our cleansing crews, we would be living in an even tidier environment and more importantly it would help to reduce Council tax and so save us money. Nigel Manning Chairman Ash Parish Council

South and South East in Bloom

For the fourth year running Ash Parish Council have been awarded a Silver Certificate in South and South East in Bloom with our entry obtaining 131 marks out of a possible 200. This mark was only 8 marks short of a Silver Gilt certificate. The judges who visited the Parish at the end of July, made specific comments relating to the overall condition of the Harpers Road Allotment site and also the way that Ash Grange Primary School involve its pupils in gardening activities, with the blue plants pots in the Jubilee colours of red, white and blue at the entrance to the school being particularly attractive.

Ash Parish Council would like to thank everyone who met with the judges during this years South and South East in Bloom.

ASH in Bloom 2012 gave residents a very difficult challenge due to the vagaries of the Great British weather! Not withstanding this, the residents of Ash came up trumps. All the lucky winners were invited to an ASH in Bloom awards ceremony held at the Ash Centre on Friday 21st September. Over 75 people were invited to the event to receive their certificates and prizes which, once again, were kindly sponsored by Mike and Jane Duffy of Duffy’s Budgens.

The certificates were presented to the winners by Mrs Jane Duffy. The actual judging took place during July, by secret visit, and the judges were looking for the quality of plants, diversity of plants, good use of colour, sustainability and also the overall impression.

Crime Stoppers

Did you know that if you have information about a crime but do not want anyone to know who you are then you can call Crimestoppers? Crimestoppers go to great lengths to ensure that callers to the telephone number are NOT identified. They do not trace the call and do not have caller ID on their lines. They also do NOT record their calls and only take infor- mation about the crime that you give them and absolutely nothing else.

If you contact them on line, your IP address is scrambled around the world, so that no one can find out where the information came from, not even Crimestoppers knows who you are!

Next year Crimestoppers will have been offering this guarantee of anonymity for 25 years! So if you do not want to call Surrey Police on 101 then call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or use their online secure form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Another way that you can help is by visiting http://wanted.crimestoppers- uk.org. This page features people wanted by Surrey Police and allows residents to leave, once again, totally anonymously, information regarding the most wanted people in the country.

Crimestoppers are always looking to recruit volunteers to help with their ever increasing workload of promoting Crimestoppers in Surrey and if you are interested in this type of work please contact Angela Hollingshead, Area Coordinator of Surrey Crimestoppers on 01483 472739 or e-mail [email protected]

This summer Surrey residents threw away enough salad to fill an Olympic Size swimming pool; or That every day Surrey residents throw away enough bread to fill a double decker bus; or This summer Surrey residents threw away enough potatoes to cover 6 football pitches.

So the message is “Cut what you can, and use your caddy for what you can’t”.

As food prices continue to rise around the world, it is a sobering thought to know that many families waste up to £50 a month throwing away uneaten food. Cutting down on food waste can be a challenge, especially when time is short and kids don’t always want to eat what’s been cooked for them. So to help residents, Surrey County Council’s Love Food Surrey Campaign provides helpful tips on how to save more and waste less.

For the food waste that you cannot avoid you should use your kerbside food waste collection service. By collecting food separately from the general waste it can be processed in a more environmentally friendly way and turned into fertiliser for use on farms.

It pays to plan before you do your next big shop. Check what you have left, be creative and make a meal planner for the week so that you only buy what you need.

If you have cooked too much, cool your leftovers as soon as possible, store in the fridge and eat within 2 days, or freeze them for another time. You can use left overs for another meal, take a look at what you already have in your kitchen to help.

Store food properly because correct storage means your food could live for extra days, weeks or even months. Keep the fridge below 5 degrees centigrade and chilled food will stay fresh for longer.

“Use by” dates are for safety and must be followed correctly, do not use any food after the end of the “use by date” even if it looks and smells fine. This is because using it after this date could put your health at risk. To extend the life of food beyond this date, freeze it before the date, defrost when needed and use within 24 hours.

“Best before” dates refer to the quality not to food safety; foods with a “best before” date should be safe to eat after this date (except for eggs) but they may no longer be at their best.
