Ash Matters The Ash Parish Council Newsletter Issue Four 2013

Chairman’s Bit

By the time you read this, consultation on Guildford Borough Council’s new Local Plan will be well underway. The Local Plan covers the whole of the borough and is the framework for the growth we need to accommodate in the next 20 years. It is a plan for new homes, places of work, shops and leisure. The Borough’s Local Plan will provide information on the scale and type of development. It will also identify the general locations for development and give indication of the infrastructure required to support it.

It is vital that local people are involved and contribute to the Local Plan and the future of the Borough and I encourage as many of you as possible to share your views through this consultation. For more information and to complete the questionnaire giving Guildford Borough Council your view go to: www.guildfordlocalplan.info; tele- phone 01483 444471; On Twitter @GuildfordBC or on Facebook face- book.com/GuildfordBC.

Councillor Nigel Manning Chairman, Ash Parish Council

Looking for a trader you can rely on? With winter fast approaching, are you looking to make home improvements? Use County Council’s Buy with Confidence scheme to find details of reliable local traders.

The scheme is run by Surrey County Council Trading Standards, and allows consumers to see a range of businesses from across the County who have all been vetted and approved by the Trading Standards Officers.

The scheme has a range of traders listed, from plumbers to gardeners, and many of the traders will consider smaller jobs for £75.00 or under.

Advantages of using the Buy with Confidence Scheme: The Buy with Confidence scheme include more than 5,000 businesses providing a wide range of products and services.

If things do go wrong, member businesses must comply with relevant legislation, resolve any consumer complaints in a fair and timely manner and understand their obligations to consumers. In short, Buy With Confidence offers consumers more peace of mind than simply choosing a trader from a local directory. This is particularly helpful for anyone who has been conned by rogue traders in the past.

To find out more about the scheme or to search for an approved trader near you visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/ buywithconfidence. The site gives you access to information on firms in the scheme so that you can buy goods and services with confidence, knowing they have signed up to the high standards laid down by the scheme and are monitored on an ongoing basis. Alternatively you can request a copy of the Buy with Confidence directory, which lists all approved traders, by calling 03456 009 009.

6 Visit the Ash Parish Council website at www.ashpcsurrey.gov.uk Guildford Borough Council - Local Plan

What is the new Local Plan? Guildford’s new Local Plan will set out the vision for the Borough and the approach to development between now and 2031. It will look at finding positive solutions for the growth needed including providing enough jobs, new homes, improving transport and creating better local facilities.

Why do we need a Local Plan? As more people live and work in the Borough, pres- sure is growing on local housing, services and infrastructure. The Government says that all areas have to grow - and all Councils need to find ways to manage this growth. The new Local Plan is Guildford Borough Councils (GBC) strategic response to help meet that growth agenda. To make sure GBC can support the right type of development of the right scale and in the right place, the local Plan needs to recognise the different and sometimes complex local requirements. The priority is to help the Borough evolve to meet changing needs. GBC also need to protect our culture and environment to provide the best choice for future generations. It will take time to create new Local Plan, but doing nothing is not an option. There must be a Local Plan and GBC want to work together with local people and stakeholders to produce it.

Strategy and Sites Issues and Options document One of the earliest stages in producing the new Local Plan is a consultation on the Strategy and Sites Issues and Options document. This sets out the key issues for the Borough and the options that could help address them in order to help GBC decide where development should happen. GBC want to hear your views on the issues and options they have told you about, and for you to tell them if you think anything is missing. The Issues and Options document will not include any housing numbers, site allocations or policies, as GBC need the community’s help to develop these ideas.

Involving our community The consultation on the Issues and Options document is open from now until 5pm on Friday 29 November. What you tell GBC during this consultation will help them develop the best overall strategy for the future development of Guildford Borough up until 2031. To help you get to know about the Local Plan and to help them find out what you think about the Issues and Options, GBC will be holding various events and exhibitions across the Borough until the end of November, these include some detailed workshops, to talk to as many people as possible within our community.

There will be a workshop in the Parish at the St Peter’s Centre, Ash Church Road, Ash on Wednesday 13th November between 7:00pm and 9:30pm. There will also be an Exhibition giving more detailed information also at the St Peters Centre on Monday11th November between 11:00am until 3:00pm. For the dates and times of other events please refer to www.guildfordlocalplan.info.
