When John Lewis led a peaceful march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, he was beaten bloody and nearly bludgeoned to death in the fight to secure the right to vote. His courage, conviction, and devotion to nonviolent activism was a driving force behind the successful passage of the Voting Rights Act, which was signed 55 years ago today and effectively ended Jim Crow era voter sup- pression. The Voting Rights Act is John Lewis’ legacy. He was willing to give his life to ensure that Black people could vote without fear, without barriers, without taxes or JOHNSON tests. Seven years ago the Supreme Court gutted crucial measures that barred practices deemed discriminato- ry because “there is no longer a [racial] disparity” in voter registration. Since this decision, efforts to sup- press the Black vote have intensified, and we’re see- ing the effects all across the country. Black voters risked their lives for generations to secure the right to vote, it has been hard fought and hard won. In the wake of the passing of Civil Right giant, Congressman John Lewis, we must honor him by fully restoring the Voting Rights Act to secure access to the ballot box. We must have the ability to vote as if our lives depend on it – because they do!
