In the 1921 census 209 people lived in the village and today it is 290. This population increase is about a tenth of the national average. The village of Penton Mewsey is situated approximately 3 miles north west of the Hampshire market town of Andover. Renowned for its equestrian connections, it also has an attractive village cricket green with its own cricket team with adjoining tennis courts, a XIV century church, a Public House and a children nursery. More local amenities are available in the nearby villages of Weyhill and Charlton. The nearby town of Andover and the cities of Salisbury and Winchester offer a more comprehensive range of shopping, recreational and leisure facilities. The West Country is also highly accessible as is the north via the A34 connecting to the M4 motorway at junction 13. This part of north Hampshire is renowned for its attractive villages and countryside and is popular with walkers and riders alike. The upper reaches of the Test Valley provide fisherman with fishing either on the Anton or Test. To the north, Chute Forest and the Downs are criss- crossed with ancient long distant paths and provide an area rich with opportunities for a range of country pursuits. There are a number of highly regarded independent schools in the area including in Andover, and Cheam Preparatory School. Towards Salisbury there is the and Chafyn Grove. To the north, near Newbury, is Thorngrove, Horris Hill and St Gabriel’s. To the south, in and around Winchester, is Pilgrim’s, , St Swithun’s School, and Princes Mead, as well as Peter Symonds Sixth
