    Communal Violence and Literature T flood of communal violence came with all its evils and left, but it left a pile of living, dead, and gasping corpses in its wake. It wasn’t only that the country was split in two, bodies and minds were also divided. Moral beliefs were tossed aside and humanity was in shreds. Government officers and clerks along with their chairs, pens and inkpots, were dis- tributed like the spoils of war. And whatever remained after this division was laid to waste by the benevolent hands of communal violence. Those whose bodies were whole had hearts that were splintered. Families were torn apart. One brother was allotted to Hindustan, the other given over to Pakistan; the mother was in Hindustan, her offspring were in Pakistan; the husband was in Hindustan, his wife was in Pakistan. The bonds of human relationships were in tatters, and in the end many souls remained behind in Hindustan while their bodies started off for Pakistan. Communal violence and freedom became so muddled that it was dif- ficult to distinguish between the two. Anyone who obtained a measure of freedom discovered violence in its wake. The storm struck without any warning so people couldn’t even gather their belongings. When things cooled down a bit people collected themselves and had a chance to observe what was going on around them. With every aspect of life disturbed by this earthshaking event, how could poets and writers possibly sit on the side without saying a word? How could literature, which bears close ties to life, avoid getting its shirt- front wet when life was drenched in blood? Thus, forgetting the struggles of love and separation, people concentrated on saving their skin and bones.

He took on the takhallus (nom de plume) of Zia meaning "Light" on the suggestion of his teacher, Ghulaam Qadir Farkh Amritsari. <b> Early Life </b> Mehr Lal Soni Zia Fatehabadi was born on 9 February 1913, at Kapurthala, Punjab, as the eldest son of Munshi Ram Soni, a Civil Engineer by profession, whose family, it is believed, had at some time during the reign of the Mughal ruler, Shahjahan, migrated from Rajasthan to Punjab and settled at Fatehabad, Punjab ( PIN Code:143407 ) near Tarn Taran. His forefather, belonging to the Kapila Gotra Kshatriya clan, who had then migrated to Fatehabad is yet to be identified, however, according to the available records kept preserved by the Pandas i.e. the Family priests who conduct the Last Rites,at Haridwar the name of Mehr Lal’s great-great-great grandfather, Tansukh Rai Soni, the son of Badri Das and was the grandson of Badal Das Soni, and who had visited Haridwar in the year 1773 has been found documented as also are the name(s) of his son, Amolak Ram, whose son, Mool Raj, was the father of Jyoti Ram, and who was also the grandfather of Munshi Ram.

    Ismat Chughtai Nonfictional Writings A Selection by Tahira Naqvi A Note on Ismat Chughtai’s Nonfictional Writings F the publication of The Quilt and Other Stories and the novel The Crooked Line in the last few years, there has been renewed interest in the work of Ismat Chughtai (–). However, this interest has been focused largely on her fictional writing. Her nonfictional writing, which is comprised of essays, commentaries, and biographical sketches, has re- ceived scant critical attention. Nevertheless this corpus is also important for a number of reasons. It gives the reader a good idea of the artistic, political, and social milieu of the author, which both serves as a back- ground to her own fiction and complex literary design and furnishes insights into the art, lives, and times of her contemporaries. The impor- tance of this nonfictional work for understanding the author’s literary intent and her specific expectations from novelistic art cannot be over- stated, any more than the importance of this work for the reconstruction of the social and intellectual history of her group, especially the Progres- sive Writers, can be exaggerated. Beyond this, Ismat Chughtai also devel- oped connections with the Bombay film world through her husband Shahid Latif, who was a filmmaker, and these connections continued after his death because of her own involvement in cinematic art. Hence, her nonfictional writing also becomes significant as a valuable resource for the study and understanding of that world. Ismat Chughtai’s involvement with the Progressive Writers’ Associa- tion, her close friendships and contacts with authors like Sa‘adat Hasan Manto, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Krishan Chander, Josh Malihabadi, Ali Sardar Jafri, Khawaja Ahmed Abbas, and her association with both famous and not so famous actors and actresses, all provided experiences which motivated her to venture beyond fiction and write ceaselessly, as one would a diary of events and impressions.

He indicates the year of his birth and relationship with the poet in his usual pithy and humorous style thus in his autobiography: “I was born in 1914. My great ancestor was so disgusted by the looks of his of his new-born descendant that he died shortly afterwards.” On his father‟s insistence Ahmad Abbas agreed to take the law degree on one condition: he would not pursue a career in law under any circumstances. KEY WORDS: Realism, Social Man, Man of human life He lives on in the minds and hearts of millions of people all over the world who have perused and relished his newspaper columns, read his books, seen his feature and documentary films, exulted at his film dialogues and marveled at his skill of film script and dialogue writing and his dramas. M. Naim was no ordinary thesis: it was a meticulously researched and thoughtfully crafted work of modern South Asian literary history, with a focus on the first four decades of the Urdu Progressive movement (the taraqqī pasañd tahrīk). This movement, especially during its formative years in the 1930s and the 1940s, nudged writers and other artists out of their world of conformity, especially in terms of class consciousness, religious and national allegiances, and gender roles. When Coppola submitted his dissertation, there was simply no work, in Urdu or in English, that could compare to this dissertation’s sweeping and balanced coverage of a movement that resonated not just in written literature but also in films, political assemblies, mass rallies, and calls for justice throughout South Asia. For the last four decades, the contents of Coppola’s work, especially the references, freely circulated among students and scholars seeking to understand the literary networks that brought Russian, English, and French worlds into contact with Urdu, and to some extent, Hindi.

The sources of history and literature witnessed that few people on the name of religion divided the subcontinent and created severe problems in all regions of the subcontinent that people still are facing even after seventy years of partition. If we go through the pages of Indian History and Partition Literature many admirable characters will come alive in front of us. About numerous events and disasters we can learn from the books of historians and literary giants who portrayed all the situations, disasters and predicaments faced by the people before, during and after partition. Partition of India is still a darkest period in the history of subcontinent and it has left indelible marks on the pages of Indian history. Many writers have attempted to represent the trauma of partition skilfully through their writings. Britishers before leaving the subcontinent tried to break the unity of religions on the name of partition, many people were shocked as they were aware about the consequences of this division. After partition, the people who earlier were friends, neighbours, colleagues were labelled as Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians and became thirsty of each others’ blood.
