It was written by Kaifi Azmi and Shama Zaidi, based on an unpublished short story by a famous Urdu writer Ismat Chughtai. This controversial film has won several national awards in 1974 including a National Integration award. This political narrative deals with the plight of a North Indian Muslim businessman Salim Mirza and his family in 1947 in Agra. He is a patriot and a Muslim shoemaker, struggles to survive in this pathetic and critical condition of communal riots. He is in a dilemma either to live in India or to emigrate to Pakistan like his other family members. The Mirza family suffers for not doing anything wrong in this post-partition environment. They could neither manage their business nor got the job. The social and marital relations are affected. Salim Mirza’s elder son Baqar moves to Pakistan with his family. His daughter Amina is frustrated having two affairs with her cousins and committed suicide. -

HOME > FILM > FESTIVALS FEBRUARY 19, 2020 8:00AM PT Indian Film Festival Los Angeles to Open With Imtiaz Ali Evening By SHALINI DORE CREDIT: AMAN DHILLON The Indian Film Festival Los Angeles will kick off not with a new film, but what is billed as An Evening With Imtiaz Ali, the writer-director of such films as “Jab We Met” and “Rockstar.” He will be joined for an onstage conversation with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. A screening of Ali’s 2014 film “Highway” will then unspool. The opening night gala presentation takes place April 1 at ArcLight Hollywood. “The MisEducation of Bindu,” directed by Prarthana Mohan and produced by Mark and Jay Duplass, will close the festival on April 5. In between, a bevy of international film festival hits from Tribeca and SXSW to Venice and Toronto will screen including Bhaskar Hazarika’s “Aamis,” Arati Kadav’s “Cargo,” Alankrita Shrivastava’s “Dolly Kitty and Those Twinkling Stars,” Gitanjali Rao’s animated “Bombay Rose” and Geetu Mohandas’ Malayalam-language “Moothoon.” There will also be an array of documentaries and shorts playing during the festival, which runs April 1-5 at Regal L.A. Live. “This year’s lineup exemplifies the boundless creativity on display in the Indian independent film community and its diaspora” said Mike Dougherty, IFFLA’s director of programming. “Visitors to IFFLA this year have their choice of animation, sci- fi/fantasy, romance, documentary, comedy, thriller and more, in films that in typical IFFLA fashion deal with hard-hitting political themes, and that challenge as well as entertain. Singh Professor of English University of Lucknow-226007 ______________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: It is an informative paper on the construct, form, and expansion of Ghazal as a poetic form. The origin of the word ‘Ghazal' goes back to the Arabic word ‘Ghazal' meaning ‘deer' in English. The reference finds roots to the act of hunting a deer. When a hunter shoots a deer in a moonlit night in the Arabian desert, the deer getting pierced with the arrow, runs around helplessly in search of water. In this state, the throat makes the sound like "gaz - gaz". A lover, in the same way, pines for his beloved, and feels emotional bleeding; this leads to the making of Ghazal. The paper discusses various aspects of Ghazal. Key Words: Ghazal, Sher, Matla, Takhallus. The Ghazal is a Persian word referring to a form of Persian poetry. It became popular in Urdu literature later. It is, generally speaking, a form of poetic expression describing platonic love. The locale, tone, and content –almost everything around Ghazal find a lover and his unattained love as the central concern. The narrator almost knows it too well that the meeting of the lovers is unattainable, yet they keep striving till the last. This pang and desire emanate into the verses of Ghazal. The complete Ghazal comprise of Shers (couplets); most of the Ghazal has less than fifteen shers, A good Ghazal has approximately five Shers. -
