Reading the memoirs of Pakistani diplomat Shaista Suhrawardy Ikramullah, From Purdah to Parliament (1963), in conjunction with three early Anglophone novels, namely, Zeenuth Futehally’s Zohra (1951), Mumtaz Shah Nawaz’s The Heart Divided (1957), and Attia Hosain’s Sunlight on a Broken Column (1961), I develop the analytic category of autoethnographic spatial discourse in contradistinction to the harem fantasy inflected colonial spatial discourse prevalent at the time in order to describe the representational practice of these twentieth century Muslim women authors, who by virtue of writing in English are compelled to serve as cultural translators. I argue that their writing positions them as cultural agents engaged in a curatorial intervention that brings the past, the built environment and cultural practices to bear on forms of remembering, and greatly influences the form of the early novel in India and Pakistan. The first chapter shows that the traditional residential form was crucial to Ikramullah’s self-fashioning as an exceptional member of the reconstituted postcolonial Muslim elite milieu of Pakistan. Ikramullah used her command over ceremonial and material culture to articulate a hybrid identity that incorporated the seemingly incommensurable inheritance of Islamicate cultural traditions and the learned codes of colonial modernity. The second chapter investigates why the novels escaped sustained scholarly attention when they first appeared, in what contexts they enjoyed renewed iv interest, and what this tells us about the field of literary history in South Asia. I argue that the current frames through which early novels in South Asia are viewed require some recalibration in order to accommodate discussions of Muslim women’s writing in English. The third and final chapter presents readings that suggest that while the private residence is conceptually monumentalised in Sunlight on a Broken Column, the autoethnographic spatial discourse in The Heart Divided and Zohra privatises monumental landscapes as sites of transgressive love, folding them within the domain of interiority and erotic excess. v Acknowledgements For a large part of my graduate career, I suffered from the obsessive need to research the antecedents of any idea or information that bore the most tangential relation to the topic of my dissertation. It seemed as though I would never be able to cover all the bases, and I was convinced that until one did that, one could not write with authority. However, I was lucky to have Professor Luiza Moreira as my advisor. In every meeting with her, I would unloose a deluge of facts, frameworks, and concepts I had beaten into the shape of claims, and Professor Moreira would unfailingly restate and organise them in more useful forms. This dissertation would never have been completed without her unflagging encouragement. At a crucial juncture, a discussion with Professor Kavita Panjabi helped streamline and pare down my project. Were it not for her, I would probably still be learning Urdu and Arabic, and trying to tackle all too many things at once without keeping the finish line in sight. My early classes with Professors Susan Strehle and Monika Mehta shaped the first iteration of this project, and they were both supportive when it took a different direction. For this, and for all the times they have generously allowed me to avail of their insights and practical advice, I am truly grateful. The incomparable cast of the PhD saga included many members of the Department of Comparative Literature at Binghamton. Our secretary Kathleen Stanley held the bureaucratic fort down and made sure I didn’t fall into a Kafkaesque nightmare of paperwork. Natalia Andrievskikh, Rania Said, Odie Santiago and Ida Roman were inspiring colleagues and housemates who showed me by example how to stick to a steady vi work ethic and chip away at overwhelming tasks little by little. They comforted me during crying jags, and, with Isabella To and Anastasiya Lyubas, and Sami Kharabsheh, filled the long cold winters and brief wondrous summers of Binghamton with warmth and laughter. Brendan Mahoney, Darwin Tsen, and Charlie Wesley helped demystify academia in the early days, often by coming up with hilarious but completely feasible titles for conference panels. I am grateful for their friendship, and the friendship of several members of the community of scholars at Binghamton, who rallied together to extend support throughout crises big and small. My parents both earned their PhDs while working full-time, and having me to deal with me besides. My mother, who suffered many hurdles during her PhD journey, made it look deceptively easy once she began writing, and her example, and constant enquiries about my progress, helped me plant my behind onto the chair and type up my findings. Conversations with Rehana Huq, aunt extraordinaire and patient soundboard, greatly influenced my conceptualisation of the project beyond the narrow confines of the dissertation. In fact, there had been different schools of thought who supported the Movement and their works and achievements cannot be forgotten. Historically, Ulema played a key role in the politics of subcontinent and the contribution of Dar ul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir-ul- Uloom (Saharanpur), Madrassa Qasim-ul-Uloom( Muradabad), famous madaris of Deobandi faction is a settled fact. Their role became both effective and emphatic with the passage of time when they sided with the All India Muslim League. Their role and services in this historic episode is the focus of the study in hand. These ulema used the pen and sword to fight against the British and it is also a fact that ordinary causes of 1857 War were blazed by these ulema. Mian Muhammad Shafi writes: Who says that the fire lit by Sayyid Ahmad was extinguished or it had cooled down? These were the people who encouraged Muslims and the Hindus to fight against the British in 1857.

The upper-caste Christian neophytes, often products of the new western education system, took to Christianity to register socio-political dissent. However, given his/her socio-political location, the Christian convert faced a crisis of entitlement: as a convert they faced immediate ostracising from Hindu conservative society, and even as devout western moderns could not partake in the colonizer’s version of selective Christian brotherhood. I argue that Christian convert literature imaginatively uses Hindu mythology as a master-narrative to partake in both these constituencies. This paper turns to the reception aesthetics of an oft forgotten play by Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the father of modern Bengali poetry, to explore the contentious relationship between Christianity and colonial modernity in nineteenth-century Bengal. In particular, Dutt’s deft use of the semantic excess as a result of the overlapping linguistic constituencies of English and Bengali is examined. Further, the paper argues that Dutt consciously situates his text at the crossroads of different receptive constituencies to create what I call ‘layered homogeneities’.

The sacrifice made by the women of India newline will occupy the foremost place. The history of freedom struggle is replete with the saga of sacrifice, selflessness, bravery of women. Many of us don’t know that there were hundreds of women who fought side by side with their male counterparts. They fought with true spirit and undismayed courage. The Indian women broke away from various restrictions and got out of their traditional home-oriented roles and responsibilities. So, the participation of women in the freedom struggle and National awakening is simply incredible and praiseworthy. However, it is not easy for women to fight as warrior’s in the male dominating society. Even though females tried to change the perception of such orthodox people who thought women are meant to do only household chores. Moreover, females not only sacrifice their lives but also combat such issues. Rani Laxmi Bhai was one of such women who fought against British role by mitigating all odds, hence this paper entitles to highlight the legacy that women showed in the history by showing their fierce nature.     Introduction The Asiatic Society, Kolkata. A toxic blend of coal dust and diesel exhaust streaks the façade with grime. The concrete of the new wing, once a soft yellow, now is dimmed. Mold, ever the enemy, creeps from around drainpipes. Inside, an old mahogany stair- case ascends past dusty paintings. The eighteenth-century fathers of the society line the stairs, their white linen and their pale skin yellow with age. I have come to sue for admission, bearing letters with university and government seals, hoping that official papers of one bureaucracy will be found acceptable by an- other. I am a little worried, as one must be about any bureaucratic encounter. But the person at the desk in reader services is polite, even friendly. Once he has enquired about my project, he becomes enthusiastic. “Ah, English language poetry,” he says. “Coleridge. ‘Oh Lady we receive but what we give . and in our lives alone doth nature live.’” And I, “Ours her wedding garment, ours her shroud.” And he, “In Xanadu did Kublai Khan a stately pleasure dome decree.” “Where Alf the sacred river ran,” I say. And we finish together, “down to the sunless sea.” I get my reader’s pass. But despite the clerk’s enthusiasm, the Asiatic Society was designed for a different project than mine. The catalog yields plentiful poems—in manuscript, on paper and on palm leaves, in printed editions of classical works, in Sanskrit and Persian, Bangla and Oriya—but no unread volumes of English language Indian poetry. In one sense, though, I have already found what I need: that appreciation of English poetry I have encountered everywhere, among strangers, friends, and col- leagues who studied in Indian English-medium schools.

    CHAPTER-3 Attia Hosain’s Sunlight on Broken Column 68 Attia Hosain: The present chapter throws light on Attia Hosain’s Sunlight on Broken Column. The novel does not directly focus on the partition but it presents the effects of partition on domestic life. Laila is the central character of this novel. She was also greatly affected by partition. The amalgamation of culture, social system, the condition of women, politics of the time are the major concern of this novel. The present chapter is an attempt to present the social, culture, religious and political scenario of the Lucknow. Attia being a Muslim female writer has tried to bring the trauma of the partition she was the first British-Indian Muslim writer to write on partition. “Echoes of the event before 97, comes from the few men and women of the sensibility, who survived the separation of brother from brother and sister from sister in the partition. These memories are agonizing and they are apprised only by the remembrance of the fact that some like Attia Hosain test the terrors. Attia’s courage was in the poetry of growing up in Avadh much loved for her own affectionate nature from which she responded to the high and low it is possible that the avenged tending’s of professor D. P. Mukherjee had heard to Indian ethos and she had the perception of promises made by those who fought for the freedom our land her empathies for progressive writer were undertone’s around her, and she emerged from divided family, undivided in her novel Sunlight on Broken Column, she seemed to have seen that “it national movement meant men folk liberation the struggle offered to women prospects for emergence as human being would not remain any longer in purdah or in sufferance for belonging feminine gender.
