th INDIAN POETRY – 20 Century Stuart Blackburn, Ph.D. Part I : Early 20th Century Part II : Late 20th Century Early 20th Century Poetry Overview Poetry, the oldest, most entrenched and most respected genre in Indian literary tradition, had survived the challenges of the nineteenth century almost intact. Colonialism and Christianity did not substantially alter the writing of poetry, but the modernism of the early twentieth century did. We could say that Indian poetry in most languages reached modernity through two stages: first romanticism and then nationalism. Urdu, however, was something of an exception to this generalisation, in as much as its modernity was implicated in a romantic nostalgia for the past. Urdu Mohammad Iqbal Mohammad Iqbal (1877?-1938) was the last major Persian poet of South Asia and the most important Urdu poet of the twentieth century. A philosopher and politician, as well, he is considered the spiritual founder of Pakistan. His finely worked poems combine a glorification of the past, Sufi mysticism and passionate anti-imperialism. As an advocate of pan-Islam, at first he wrote in Persian (two important poems being ‗Shikwah,‘ 1909, and ‗Jawab-e-Shikwah,‘ 1912), but then switched to Urdu, with Bangri-Dara in 1924. In much of his later work, there is a tension between the mystical and the political, the two impulses that drove Urdu poetry in this period. Progressives The political came to dominate in the next phase of Urdu poetry, from the 1930s, when several poets formed what is called the ‗progressive movement.‘ Loosely connected, they nevertheless shared a tendency to favour social engagement over formal aesthetics. -

Sri Aurobindo: A Postmodern Sublime Poet Dr. Atal Kumar Among all the leading poets of the early twentieth century Indian English poets Sri Aurobindo is vibrant with the contemporary literary ethos–modernism vis-a-vis postmodernism. His modernism was not haunted by what T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound found during the First World War rather pressed by his inner urge of Sublime. Sri Aurobindo's Muse was drenched in the showers of Sublime. He had been a great Indian religious, philosophical and social thinker as well as postmodern sublime poet. The great spiritual master was born on 15 August 1872 in an aristocratic and anglicised family in Calcutta. Sri Krishnandan Ghose, his father, was among them who first went to England for his medical education and returned with anglophilic blood in his veins. Certainly, the early life of that mystic poet was moulded under the parasol of his father's anglicised habits, ideas and ideals. His father's anglophilic disposition induced him to keep his children away from the Indian ways of life. On the contrary Sri Aurobindo's mother Swarnlata Devi belonged to the clan of great Indian Renaissance man of the nineteenth century, Rishi Rajnarayan Bose. She was the adviser of the new composite culture of Indian soil. Dr. Krishnandan Ghose's inner temperament forced him to nurture him in English atmosphere and not from native ways and native language. As a result of that Sri Aurobindo along with his elder brothers Sri Manmohan Ghose and Sri Benoy Bhushan Ghose were admitted to Loreto Convent School at Darjeeling. -

The upper-caste Christian neophytes, often products of the new western education system, took to Christianity to register socio-political dissent. However, given his/her socio-political location, the Christian convert faced a crisis of entitlement: as a convert they faced immediate ostracising from Hindu conservative society, and even as devout western moderns could not partake in the colonizer’s version of selective Christian brotherhood. I argue that Christian convert literature imaginatively uses Hindu mythology as a master-narrative to partake in both these constituencies. This paper turns to the reception aesthetics of an oft forgotten play by Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the father of modern Bengali poetry, to explore the contentious relationship between Christianity and colonial modernity in nineteenth-century Bengal. In particular, Dutt’s deft use of the semantic excess as a result of the overlapping linguistic constituencies of English and Bengali is examined. Further, the paper argues that Dutt consciously situates his text at the crossroads of different receptive constituencies to create what I call ‘layered homogeneities’. -
William Carlos Williams' Indian Son(G)
The News from That Strange, Far Away Land: William Carlos Williams’ Indian Son(g) Graziano Krätli YALE UNIVERSITY 1. In his later years, William Carlos Williams entertained a long epistolary relationship with the Indian poet Srinivas Rayaprol (1925-98), one of a handful who contributed to the modernization of Indian poetry in English in the first few decades after the independence from British rule. The two met only once or twice, but their correspondence, started in the fall of 1949, when Rayaprol was a graduate student at Stanford University, continued long after his return to India, ending only a few years before Williams’ passing. Although Williams had many correspondents in his life, most of them more important and better known literary figures than Rayaprol, the young Indian from the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh was one of the very few non-Americans and the only one from a postcolonial country with a long and glorious literary tradition of its own. More important, perhaps, their correspondence occurred in a decade – the 1950s – in which a younger generation of Indian poets writing in English was assimilating the lessons of Anglo-American Modernism while increasingly turning their attention away from Britain to America. Rayaprol, doubly advantaged by virtue of “being there” (i.e., in the Bay Area at the beginning of the San Francisco Renaissance) and by his mentoring relationship with Williams, was one of the very first to imbibe the new poetic idiom from its sources, and also one of the most persistent in trying to keep those sources alive and meaningful, to him if not to his fellow poets in India. -

A portrait of the printmaker, draughtsman and book illustrator Charles Haslewood Shannon (1863- 1937), at the age of thirty-three. Shannon was a key figure in the London art world between 1890 and 1930 and, together with his lifelong partner Charles Ricketts, designed and illustrated a large number of books, published an art journal entitled The Dial, and in 1894 established the Vale Press, named after their home in Chelsea. It was through Oscar Wilde that Rothenstein first met Shannon and Ricketts in 1893, soon after his return to London from Paris. As he recalled in his memoirs, ‘Oscar Wilde had taken me to the Vale to see Ricketts and Shannon before I came to live in Chelsea, when I was charmed by these men, and by their simple dwelling, with its primrose walls, apple-green skirting and shelves, the rooms hung with Shannon’s lithographs, a fan-shaped watercolour by Whistler, and drawings by Hokusai – their first treasures, to be followed by so many others.’ Ricketts and Shannon formed an impressive collection of Old Master drawings and paintings, antiquities, Persian miniatures and Japanese prints. In 1894 Rothenstein and Shannon shared a joint exhibition of their drawings and lithographs at E. J. van Wisselingh’s Dutch Gallery on Brook Street, London. This was to be Rothenstein’s first major London exhibition, and included thirty-one of his works, mostly portrait lithographs as well as some drawings and pastels. -

Throughout that decade and into the first three years of the nineteenth century, he worked consistently at accumulating the substantial range of ballad versions and archival material that he would use to produce what was intended to be an authoritative and definitive print version of oral and traditional Borders ballad culture. For the remainder of his life Scott continued to write and speak with affection of his “Liddesdale Raids,” the ballad collecting and research trips that he made into the Borders country around Liddesdale mainly during the years 1792–99. J. G. Lockhart, his son-in-law and biographer, describes the period spent compiling the Minstrelsy as “a labour of love truly, if ever there was,” noting that the degree of devotion was such that the project formed “the editor’s chief occupation” during the years 1800 and 1801. 1 At the same time, Lockhart takes particular care to state that the ballad project did not prevent Scott from attending the Bar in Edinburgh or from fulfilling his responsibilities as Sheriff Depute of Selkirkshire, a post he was appointed to on 16th December 1799. 2 The initial two volumes of the Minstrelsy, respectively sub-titled “Historical Ballads” and “Romantic Ballads,” were published in January 1802. 3 A third volume, supplementary to the first two, was published in May 1803. -

ABSTRACT As the first major study of the portrait artist Bernard Fleetwood-Walker (1893- 1965), this thesis locates the artist in his social, political and economic context, arguing that his portraiture can be seen as an exemplar of modernity. The portraits are shown to be responses to modern life, revealed not in formally avant- garde depictions, but in the subject-matter. Industrial growth, the increasing population, expanding suburbs, and a renewed interest in the outdoor life and popular entertainment are reflected in Fleetwood-Walker’s artistic output. The role played by exhibition culture in the creation of the portraits is analysed: developing retail theory affected gallery design and exhibition layout and in turn impacted on the size, subject matter and style of Fleetwood-Walker’s portraits. -

It uncovers a historical pattern of Bengali intellectual life that marked the period from the 1870stothe1920s, whereby an imperial imagination was transformed into an international one, as a generation of intellectuals born between 1885 and 1905 reinvented the political category of “youth”. Hermeneutics, as a philosophically informed study of how meaning is created through conversation, and grounded in this essay in the thought of Hans Georg Gadamer, helps to reveal this pattern. -

The Nature of British Mapping of West Africa, 1749 – 1841 Sven Daniel Outram-Leman University of Stirling PhD History Submitted 1st May 2017 Author’s declaration The work contained in this thesis is entirely my own. The views expressed are entirely my own, and not those of the University of Stirling 1 Abstract By focusing on the “nature” of mapping, this thesis falls under the category of critical cartography closely associated with the work of Brian Harley in the 1980s and early 1990s. As such the purpose of this research is to highlight the historical context of British maps, map-making and map-reading in relation to West Africa between 1749 and 1841. I argue that maps lie near the heart of Britain’s interactions with West Africa though their appearance, construction and use evolved dramatically during this period. By beginning this study with a prominent French example (Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville’s 1749 “Afrique”) I show how British map-makers adapted cartography from France for their own purposes before circumstances encouraged the development of new materials. Because of the limited opportunities to make enquiries in the region and the relatively few people involved in affecting change to the map’s content, this thesis highlights the episodes and manufactured narratives which feature in the chronology of evolving cartographies. This study concludes with the failure of the 1841 Niger Expedition, when Britain’s humanitarian agenda saw the attempted establishment of a model farm on banks of the Niger River and the negotiation of anti-slave trade treaties with nearby Africans.
