It is designed as a flexible set of suggestions for incorporating concepts, understandings, objectives, strategies, and available materials. Emphasis is upon inductive methods which encourage conceptual learning through the inquiry approach rather than a factual summarizing of content. Data is provided for student analysis and comparison, several case studies are included, and a variety of reference material is presented throughout. Teaching modules provide models in utilizing the instructional material. The guide is arranged into four major sections. 1)"The Village: Suggestions For a Case Study." Teaching suggestions on Hinduism and a model for the study of a village, along with an annotated multimedia listing of village study kits and monographs, are provided. 2) "Indials Goals: The Impossible Dream?" India's economy and related social structure based upon India's Third Year Plan is examined and analyzed through a teaching module technique. 3) "India Yesterday and Today." Grenda Chief, Bureau of Social Studies Education Donald H. pragaw FOREWORD Teaching About India is intended to help the teacher of Social Studies 9:Asian and African CuZture Studies implement the teaching of Topic IV of that syllabus.To that end, it is oriented in terms of the understandings and concepts stressed in the course of study.As in other teaching guides in the revised social studies sequence, however, the organization of the guide is intended to promote an inquiry approach rather than a factual summarizing of content. To provide raw material for student analysis and comparison, several case studies or data collections are included, or references to such materials avail- able commercially are given.Most segments are set up as teaching modules to provide models in utilizing such material in learning about India and Indian culture. A moving force in the production of this guide has been the Department's Center for International Programs and Comparative Studies and its "Indian office," the Educational Resources Center in New Delhi which this Department has cosponsored with the University of California under a grant from the United States Office of Education. Norman Abramowitz of the Center for International Programs and Comparative Studies and Janet Gilbert of this Bureau were assigned to ERC in 1967, for several months, to initiate collection of data and generally explore the possibilities of identifying curriculum material on location. Frank M. Keetz, social studies teacher at Bethlehem Central High School, Delmar; James A. Loebell, assistant principal, Huntington High School; and Edward J. McGreevy, supervisor of Social Studies, Niagara Falls; who served as writer-consultants for this publication, are all alumni of the Center's various overseas seminars. Som Kaul, research director of ERC, served as a short-term consultant on the project and directed alast minute field collection of data to give the discussion of change in Indian economic and social factors a current cast.Mrs. Sharda Nayak of the Educational Resources Center staff reviewed some of the preliminary materials and made suggestions of other items to include. Ronald A. Rehner, social studies teacher at Thomas A. Edison High School, Elmira Heights, also made a significant contribution in developing the transparencies segment of this publication. Rai, Sonepat – 131029, Haryana (India) Dr. Prabhakar Machwe (1917-1991) Prolific writer, linguist and an authority on Indian literature, Dr. Prabhakar Machwe was born on 26 December 1917 at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. He graduated from Vikram University, Ujjain and obtained Masters in Philosophy, 1937, and English Literature, 1945, Agra University; Sahitya Ratna and Ph.D, Agra University, 1957. Dr. Machwe started his career as a lecturer in Madhav College, Ujjain, 1938-48. He worked as Literary Producer, All India Radio, Nagpur, Allahabad and New Delhi, 1948-54. He was closely associated with Sahitya Akademi from its inception in 1954 and served as Assistant Secretary, 1954-70, and Secretary, 1970-75. Dr. Machwe was Visiting Professor in Indian Studies Departments at the University of Wisconsin and the University of California on a Fulbright and Rockefeller grant (1959-1961); and later Officer on Special Duty (Language) in Union Public Service Commission, 1964-66. After retiring from Sahitya Akademi in 1975, Dr. Machwe was a visiting fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Simla, 1976-77, and Director of Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad, Calcutta, 1979-85. He spent the last years of his life in Indore as Chief Editor of a Hindi daily, Choutha Sansar, 1988-91. Dr. Prabhakar Machwe travelled widely for lecture tours to Germany, Russia, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Japan and Thailand. He organised national and international seminars on the occasion of the birth centenaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo between 1961 and 1972.

    248 Chapter: 5 Region in the Novels of R. K. Narayan and Pannalal Patel: A Comparative Analysis The fifth chapter incorporating the title of thesis offers the comparative analysis of resemblances and differences in Narayan and Pannalal’s literary career. To study these novelists in comparative approach, the factors like their birth and family, sources of inspiration, educational career, domestic life and economic struggle, evaluation as a writer, publisher, sense of regionalism, and thematic study of their works along with critical reception and Gandhian perspectives are examined. Comparing biographical details and their location, we observe that Pannalal Patel was born on 7th of May, 1912 and died in 1989 on 6th of April while R.K. Narayan was born on 10th of October, 1906 and died in 2001 on 14th of May. Narayan’s life span in comparison to Pannalal is almost two decades longer. Both were the product of the first half of the twentieth century. The first two decades of the twentieth century gave India its luminous stars and enriched its literary world. This period in Indian literature has been assigned the title like Pre- independence period or Colonial phase. Pannalal Patel belonged to Anjana Patel caste known as Chaudhari community. The majority of this community resides in Mahesana, Sabarkantha, Patan and Banaskantha district of North Gujarat state. The Chaudhari community has also been spread in some other states like Rajasthan and Haryana in India. Now-a-days this community is prescribed in the list of SEBC (Socially and Economically Backward Class) category in a state like Gujarat.

The sacrifice made by the women of India newline will occupy the foremost place. The history of freedom struggle is replete with the saga of sacrifice, selflessness, bravery of women. Many of us don’t know that there were hundreds of women who fought side by side with their male counterparts. They fought with true spirit and undismayed courage. The Indian women broke away from various restrictions and got out of their traditional home-oriented roles and responsibilities. So, the participation of women in the freedom struggle and National awakening is simply incredible and praiseworthy. However, it is not easy for women to fight as warrior’s in the male dominating society. Even though females tried to change the perception of such orthodox people who thought women are meant to do only household chores. Moreover, females not only sacrifice their lives but also combat such issues. Rani Laxmi Bhai was one of such women who fought against British role by mitigating all odds, hence this paper entitles to highlight the legacy that women showed in the history by showing their fierce nature. SATYAGRAHA IN SOUTH AFRICA1 FOREWORD Shri Valji Desai’s translation has been revised by me, and I can assure the reader that the spirit of the original in Gujarati has been very faithfuly kept by the translator. The original chapters were all written by me from memory. They were written partly in the Yeravda jail and partly outside after my premature release. As the translator knew of this fact, he made a diligent study of the file of Indian Opinion and wherever he discovered slips of memory, he has not hesitated to make the necessary corrections. The reader will share my pleasure that in no relevant or material paricular has there been any slip. I need hardly mention that those who are following the weekly chapters of My Experiments with Truth cannot afford to miss these chapters on satyagraha, if they would follow in all its detail the working out of the search after Truth. GANDHI SABARMATI 26th April, 19282 1 Gandhiji started writing in Gujarati the historty of Satyagraha in South Africa on November 26, 1923, when he was in the Yeravda Central Jail; vide “Jail Diary, 1923.” By the time he was released, on February 5, 1924, he had completed 30 chapters. The chapters of Dakshina Africana Satyagrahano Itihas, as it was entitled, appeared serially in the issues of the Navajivan, beginning on April 13, 1924, and ending on November 22, 1925. The preface to the first part was written at Juhu, Bombay, on April 2, 1924; that to the second appeared in Navajivan, 5-7-1925.
