Announcing International Course On Gandhian Nonviolence: Theory and Application th 2020-2021 (9 batch) Part A: Rationale of the Programme As the title suggests, the overall purpose of the course is to give its seekers orientation in the theoretical and practical dimensions of Nonviolence as explained and applied by Mahatma Gandhi in his personal and public life. However, the course content will not be limited to the Gandhian framework only; the examples and interpretations of other practitioners of nonviolence will also be relied upon. We know that the contemporary world is in turmoil. The chief characteristic of the contemporary world is violence; escalating and intensifying violence has become the key defining feature in public life and discourse. Terrorism and war on terrorism mark the worst manifestations of violence and has created a new discourse. Some of the sensitive people in the west even ask: Are we facing End –Time? The more pertinent question, of course, is how we address and get out of the vicious circle of violence. It is here that Gandhi steps in with his message of all-embracing nonviolence or ahimsa. It is well known that there is a growing interest world-wide, particularly in the west, on Gandhi and his theory and practice of nonviolence. Peace activists are trying to understand Gandhian nonviolence in order to equip themselves better in their struggle for peace and justice. Many of them have expressed their desire to get a formal training in Gandhian nonviolence in India which would expose them not only to the life, philosophy and method of Gandhi but also to Indian social life and culture. -

March for Freedom Author: Subhadra Sen Gupta Illustrator: Tapas Guha Re-level: Aditi Ghosh - AT SABARMATI ASHRAM - Dhani looked anxious. "Why is Gandhiji going on a march? I want to go too! But no one will tell me anything!" he complained gruffly, to himself. Dhani was a nine-year-old boy. He lived with his family in a special place called Sabarmati Ashram. Sabarmati Ashram was made by a very great man called Mahatma Gandhi. The Ashram was a peaceful place on the banks of the River Sabarmati. People here lived and worked together in simple- looking cottages and on the fields around. Dhani loved playing under the Neem trees with his special friends, the birds and squirrels. Everyone had some work to do at the Ashram. They spun their own cloth thread on special wooden wheels called charkhas. They wove this thread into khadi cloth and sewed their own clothes. They fetched their own water, grew their own vegetables, and milked their own goats. Binni the goat, was Dhani's best friend! 2/18 3/18 DHANI TRIES TO FIGURE IT OUT! Dhani ran over to Binni. Binni the goat, looked calm and satisfied. "Why is Gandhiji going on a march, Binni?" Dhani asked seriously. "I want to go too!" Binni chewed slowly on his breakfast; he did not even look up from his grass. Then Dhani peeped into the kitchen. Ammaji looked tired and worried. "Why is Gandhiji going on a march, Ammaji?" Dhani asked, seriously. "I want to go too!" Dhani's mother kept working and fanned the kitchen fire slowly; she looked up but did not say a word. -

Dada Abdullah and Company set sail for Durban from Bombay on 19 April 1893 and arrived in (427 Dr Pixley kaSeme Street) Durban on Tuesday 23 May 1893. Gandhi spent some twenty years in South Africa, returning to India in 1914. The period he spent in South Africa has often been described as his political and spiritual Sheth Abdul Karim Adam Jhaveri, a partner of Dada Abdullah and apprenticeship. Gandhi e le donne occidentali Di Thomas Weber* Abstract: This paper is the Italian translation of an edited chapter of Thomas Weber’s Going Native. Gandhi’s Relationship With Western Women (Roli Books, New Delhi 2011) in which Gandhi’s attitudes to and relationships with women are analysed. Many Western women inspired him, worked with him, supported him in his political activities in South Africa and India, or contributed to shaping his international image. Of particular note are those women who “became native” to live with Gandhi as close friends and disciples. Through these fascinating women, we get a different insight into Gandhi’s life. *** Il rapporto di Gandhi con le donne si è rivelato di irresistibile fascino per molti. Molto spesso le persone che non conoscono praticamente nulla del Mahatma commentano il fatto che “dormì” con giovani donne durante la vecchiaia. Gran parte di questo deriva dall’interesse pruriginoso promosso da biografie sensazionalistiche o libri volti a smascherare il “mito del Mahatma” (Ved Metha 1976). Gandhi parlava spesso delle donne come del sesso più forte (e questo è stato visto come una forma di paternalismo dai critici, soprattutto di orientamento femminista) e di come desiderasse essere una madre per i suoi seguaci. Rai, Sonepat – 131029, Haryana (India) Dr. Prabhakar Machwe (1917-1991) Prolific writer, linguist and an authority on Indian literature, Dr. Prabhakar Machwe was born on 26 December 1917 at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. He graduated from Vikram University, Ujjain and obtained Masters in Philosophy, 1937, and English Literature, 1945, Agra University; Sahitya Ratna and Ph.D, Agra University, 1957. Dr. Machwe started his career as a lecturer in Madhav College, Ujjain, 1938-48. He worked as Literary Producer, All India Radio, Nagpur, Allahabad and New Delhi, 1948-54. He was closely associated with Sahitya Akademi from its inception in 1954 and served as Assistant Secretary, 1954-70, and Secretary, 1970-75. Dr. Machwe was Visiting Professor in Indian Studies Departments at the University of Wisconsin and the University of California on a Fulbright and Rockefeller grant (1959-1961); and later Officer on Special Duty (Language) in Union Public Service Commission, 1964-66. After retiring from Sahitya Akademi in 1975, Dr. Machwe was a visiting fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Simla, 1976-77, and Director of Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad, Calcutta, 1979-85. He spent the last years of his life in Indore as Chief Editor of a Hindi daily, Choutha Sansar, 1988-91. Dr. Prabhakar Machwe travelled widely for lecture tours to Germany, Russia, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Japan and Thailand. He organised national and international seminars on the occasion of the birth centenaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo between 1961 and 1972. -

CHAPTER 1 MAHATMA GANDHI To be Human is to be One with God Mahatma Gandhi: A brief outline The best sources for a detailed life of Mahatma Gandhi are his autobiography and the many collected works that appear under his name. In brief, he was born in India in 1869, was married at the age of 13, and traveled to study law in England at the age of 19. His first trip to South Africa was in 1893 at the request of Indians in that country. While at Pietermaritzburg he was ejected from the train for sitting in a compartment reserved for whites. He sided with the British during the Boer War (although his sympathies lay with the Boers). During the Zulu War he formed the Ambulance Corps to help wounded soldiers, but also to show his loyalty to the British Empire. After the Zulu War, Gandhi took a vow of celibacy, and began using nonviolence as way for attaining rights for Indians in South Africa. It was after the Zulu War that he began articulating the goal of life as attaining moksha, or oneness with God. It was also in South Africa that the word Satyagraha was coined. After 21 years in South Africa, Gandhi left for India and worked for the independence of India from Britain. He was assassinated in 1948. Needless to say, this paragraph gives a brief timeline of Gandhi. Again, The Autobiography and Collected Works (which appear in the text as CWMG for Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi) offer detailed information on the Mahatma. The depiction of Gandhi’s philosophy and understanding of human nature in this chapter differs from most works on Gandhi by deliberately focusing on the influence of non-western cultures and his rejection and critique of capitalism Most Gandhian scholars present him as a person desperately trying to assimilate into the dominant capitalist culture, or mute his criticisms of capitalism. -

1. SPEECH AT PUBLIC MEETING, CHICACOLE December 3, 1927 You seem to be dividing all the good things with poor Utkal1. I flattered myself with the assumption that my arrival here is one of the good things, for I was going to devote all the twenty days to seeing the skeletons of Orissa; but as you, the Andhras, are the gatekeepers of Orissa on this side, you have intercepted my march. But I am glad you have anticipated me also. After entering Andhra Desh, I have been doing my business with you and I know God will reward all those unknown people who have been co-operating with me who am a self- appointed representative of Daridranarayana. And here, too, you have been doing the same thing. Last night, several sister came and presented me with a purse. But let me tell you this is not after all my tour in Andhra. I am not going to let you alone so easily as this, nor will Deshabhakta Konda Venkatappayya let me alone, because I have toured in some parts of Ganjam. I am under promise to tour Andhra during the early part of next year, and let me hope what you are doing is only a foretaste of what you are going to do next year. You have faith in true non-co-operation. There is the great drink evil, eating into the vitals of the labouring population. I would like you to non-co-operate with that evil without a single thought and I make a sporting proposal, viz., that those who give up drink habit should divide their savings with me on behalf of Daridranarayan.
