    Writer and journalist Attia Hosain was born in Lucknow, India, in 1913 into a prominent feudal or taluqdari family of the Awadh province of Lucknow. Her father was educated at Christ College, Cambridge, and was a contemporary of well-known politicians of the time. Her mother's family was fluent in the language traditions of classical Persian, Arabic and Urdu. As a result, Hosain spent her childhood in the company of the country's leading political intelligentsia and she was taught Persian, Arabic and Urdu at an early age. She studied at the La Martinière School for Girls and later went on to the Isabella Thoburn College, a leading college for women, affiliated to the Lucknow University. In 1933 at the age of 20, she became the first woman in her family to graduate from the University of Lucknow. She published two books throughout her lifetime that provide a unique insight into the courtly life of India's Muslim aristocracy, and the divisions and changes which Partition brought about. Hosain began writing in a period which was mostly dominated by male writers and is known as one of the earliest female diaspora writers from the subcontinent. As Lakshmi Holmstrom points out in her essay 'Attia Hosain: her life and work', published on the 'Indian Review of Books' (Vol. 8 and 9,1991), Hosain was at least a decade older than other South Asian women writers, such as Kamala Markandaya, who also settled in the UK, and Nayantara Sahgal. In her 30s, Hosain began writing for newspapers such as 'The Pioneer' and 'The Statesman' which were both leading English newspapers in Calcutta.

    PPrroommpptteedd bbyy aa FFeeaatthheerr James Mills Thoburn (1836 – 1922) was an American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church best known for his missionary work in India. Born in St. Clairsville, Ohio, he graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, Penn., in 1857 and began his Methodist preaching ministry that same year in the Pittsburgh Conference. Thoburn went to India as a missionary in 1859 and was stationed successively at Nynee Tal, Moradabad, Lucknow and Calcutta, where he founded Calcutta Boys' School in 1877. Preaching in both the native and European languages, he built the largest church in India at that time. Bishop Thoburn was walking down the street one day when a large eagle feather drifted to the ground near him. He searched the sky for the eagle, but saw nothing. Turning the feather over in his hands, he recalled that pens made out of such feathers had written many historic documents. He carefully took a sharp knife and sliced it across the heavy end of the feather. It wrote so beautifully that he decided to write a letter to his sister, Isabella Thoburn, in Boston. He wrote how the girls and women of India were mistreated and neglected, and that he felt God desired that something be done about it. Then he added, “You are a school teacher. Although you are excellent, there are thousands of others in America who could take your place. Why don’t you come over here and start a school for the girls and women who come to my compound to church?” His sister read the letter to the Women’s Missionary Society of the church.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 INTRODUCTION Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow, the first Women’s Christian College in South Asia has been imparting quality education to young inquisitive girls since 131 years The institution traces its roots back to the founder Ms. Isabella Thoburn’s ideology: “No people ever rise higher, as a people, than the point to which they elevate their women.” Ms Thoburn decided that her first priority would be the education of girls, and the next priority would be evangelistic work with women secluded in their homes. While it was initially started as a school in a one-room house on a busy street, its current location at Chand Bagh (Moon Garden) was chosen after much deliberation and the college shifted to its present campus in 1922. True to its motto- ’We receive to Give’- the institution works with a commitment to create a just and humane society. The endeavour is to uphold national integration and religious harmony with special emphasis on the enrichment of women from all walks of life. The College stood at 35th rank in Science and 31st rank in Arts stream among all the colleges of India during 2017 in India Today- Neilson Ranking of Colleges and ranked 1st in the city, which is a matter of great pride for the Institution.

    Ismat Chughtai on Today's Google Doodle - GK Notes as PDF! Ismat Chughtai (21 August 1915–24 October 1991) was famous Indian Urdu language writer. In the 1930s she published her work that focussed on feminity, middle-class gentility, and female sexuality. Ismat Chughati made her presence felt in the Urdu literature in the twentieth century. She was honored with Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1976. On her 107th birthday today, Google doodle referred to her as the “grande dame of Urdu fiction.” Ismat Chughtai – An Introduction Ismat Chughtai was born on 21 August 1915 in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh to Nusrat Khanam and Mirza Qaseem Baig. Since, her father was a civil servant her childhood was spent in several cities like Agra, Jodhpur, and Aligarh in the company of her brothers. Under this influence, her personality developed in formative years. Ismat Chughtai - Personal Life • She completed primary education from the Women's College at the Aligarh Muslim University. • Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Isabella Thoburn College in 1940. • She became associated with the Progressive Writers' Association in her early days and attained her first meeting in 1936. • In this meeting, she met Rashid Jahan, a leading women writer who inspired Chughtai for writing realistic and challenging female characters. • Chugtai started writing in this period, however, published her work much later. Ismat Chughtai - Career Journey • In 1939, she wrote a drama name Fasādī (The Troublemaker) for the Urdu magazine, her first published work. • Ismat Chugtai later started writing for other publication houses and newspapers. • Her works included literary pieces like Bachpan an autobiography, Kafir a short-story, and Dheet a soliloquy.
