    Writer and journalist Attia Hosain was born in Lucknow, India, in 1913 into a prominent feudal or taluqdari family of the Awadh province of Lucknow. Her father was educated at Christ College, Cambridge, and was a contemporary of well-known politicians of the time. Her mother's family was fluent in the language traditions of classical Persian, Arabic and Urdu. As a result, Hosain spent her childhood in the company of the country's leading political intelligentsia and she was taught Persian, Arabic and Urdu at an early age. She studied at the La Martinière School for Girls and later went on to the Isabella Thoburn College, a leading college for women, affiliated to the Lucknow University. In 1933 at the age of 20, she became the first woman in her family to graduate from the University of Lucknow. She published two books throughout her lifetime that provide a unique insight into the courtly life of India's Muslim aristocracy, and the divisions and changes which Partition brought about. Hosain began writing in a period which was mostly dominated by male writers and is known as one of the earliest female diaspora writers from the subcontinent. As Lakshmi Holmstrom points out in her essay 'Attia Hosain: her life and work', published on the 'Indian Review of Books' (Vol. 8 and 9,1991), Hosain was at least a decade older than other South Asian women writers, such as Kamala Markandaya, who also settled in the UK, and Nayantara Sahgal. In her 30s, Hosain began writing for newspapers such as 'The Pioneer' and 'The Statesman' which were both leading English newspapers in Calcutta.

Its destination: the first school for Muslim girls in north India that had been set up a few years ago. Sometimes, the palanquin would be replaced by a cart, a big white sheet wrapped around it to maintain purdah. Inside would be the giggling children of the school’s founders and reformists, Shaikh Abdullah and Wahid Jahan. The lurching “school bus” provided much mirth, and excitement — once it got stuck on the railway tracks, as the sheet got caught in the wheels. Out jumped the eldest daughter Rashid Jahan, with blithe disregard for the restrictions of being seen in public. She tugged and pushed the cart out, a few minutes before the train would roar past. Her aunt would later admonish her: “Were you not ashamed?… There were so many men staring.” The women on that journey were pioneers of their age, braving stares as well as opprobrium of the society. From 1906, the school set up by ( Rashid’s fathers ) Abdullah, despite great opposition, to educate girls from sharif Muslim homes, would be a bridge to a better, empowered life for many young women.

    Urdu Literature and Women (Student Paper) A the commonly-held understanding, Indian civilization, whether Hindu or Muslim, is male chauvinist and hostile to women, but, at least from the literary point of view, women writers have contributed enormously to the progress of Indian literature, especially in the case of Urdu. The fact is that, although in ancient times Hindu women enjoyed considerable freedom and held positions of responsibility and prestige, they lost most of their rights from the third century C.E. onward, as soon as the Laws of Manu came into force. Afterwards, even though they were ostensibly considered goddesses, in practice they were reduced to servi- tude. Furthermore, when Muslims settled permanently on the Subconti- nent, they showed a certain tendency to adopt, as far as women were con- cerned, Hindu customs, even when Islamic precepts were by and large more liberal. The result was that women had to submit to the most restrictive rules codified by both religious systems (Bhushan , –). The many cases of female preeminence mentioned by Rizvi (, –), Rekha Misra (), Moroccan sociologist Fatima Mernissi (), and Annemarie Schimmel are just some exceptions proving the rule. When writing about the relationship between women and Urdu lit- erature, it seems advisable to make a distinction between literature aimed at women and literature written by women. Literature aimed at women, although mostly written by men, is extremely important, for it reflects female identity as patriarchal society saw it or, at least, as it wanted it to be.
