Universities (Amendment) Act, 1956] [Amended by the Lucknovi/ University (Amendment) Act, 1957] [Amended by the Uttar Pradesh Universities Act, 1959] fAmended by the Uttar Pradesh Universities Act, 1961] [Amended by the Uitar Pradesh Universities Act, 1966] The Lucknow University Act, 1920 [Amended by the Uttar Pradesh Universities (Amend­ ment) Act, 1969J A N ACT TO ESTABUSH AND INCORPORATE A UNITARY TEACHING & RESIDENTIAL UNIVER* SITY AT LUCKNOW Whereas it is expedient to establish and incorporate a Unitary, Teaching and Residential University at Lucknow, it is hereby enacted as follows :— 1. (1) This Act may be called the Lucknow University Short title Act,’ 1920, and cum- menccment. (2) It shall come into force on such date as the Local Government may, by notification in the Gazette, direct. 2. In this Act, and in all Statutes made hereunder Definition. unless there is anything repugnant in the subject or con­ text. (a) Deleted, (a<3! "Associated College” means an institution recog­ nized by the University and authorised under the provisions of this Act to provide the teach­ ing necessary for admission to a degree of ihe University; {aaa) “Constituent College” means an institution main­ tained by the University or by the State Government and authorized to conduct all the teaching necessary for admission to a degree of the University ; {b) “Hall” means a unit of residence for students of the University maintained by the University or if not so maintained, recognized by the University in accordance with the provisions of this Act, in which tutorial and other supple­ mentary instruction may be given under the direction of the University in accordance with the Ordinances; {bb) “Management” means the Managing Committee or other body charged with managing the affairs of an institution recognized by the University : {bhb) “Delegacy” means the authority charged under this Act with the care of students of the Uni­ versity, not residing in or attached to a H all; (c) “Principal” means the Head of a College ; (</) ^‘Provost” means the Head of a Hall ; (e) “Registered graduates” means graduates regis­ tered under the provisions of this A ct; (ee) “State Government” means the Government of the State of Uttar Pradesh ; (/) “Statutes” “Ordinances” and “Regulations” means, respectively, the Statutes, Ordinances, and Regulations of the University for the time being in force; iff) “Student of the University” means a person enrolled in the University or a Constituent College for taking a course of study for a degree, diploma or other academic distinction duly instituted but doe* not include a person enrolled in an Associated College ; (g) ^‘Tcacher’' means a person employed by the University, a Constituent College, and Associ­ ated College, or a Hall for giving instruction or guiding or conducting research in any sub­ ject of the courses of study taught therein j {h) “Teacher of the University” means a person appointed and paid by the University for im­ parting instruction or conducting research in the University or a Constituent College, main­ tained by the University; (/) “ University” means the University of Lucknow. THE UNIVERSITY Tke 3. (1) The first Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of the U*iT«riity University and the first members of the Court, tht Executive Council and the Academic Council, and all persons who may hereafter become such officers or members, so long as they continue to hold such office or membership, are hereby constituted a body corporate by the name of the University of Lucknow. (2) The University shall have perpetual succcssion and a Common Seal, and shall sue and be sued by the said name. 4. The University shall have the following powers, Powers namely — •f tke U»irer»it7 (1) to provide for iastruction in such branches of learning as my be prescribed by the Ordi­ nances and to make provisions for research and for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge ; (2) to institute degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions, and to bold examinations for and grant and confer such degrees, diplomas and distinctions to and on persons who - {a) shall have pursued a course of study in the Uni­ versity, an Associated College or a Constitu­ ent College or carried on research in the Uni­ versity or a Constituent College, under condi­ tions prescribed in the Statutes or Ordinances, or {b) are teachers in educational institutions satisfying conditions prescribed by the Ordinances in this behalf, or (c) shall have carried on research in an institution recognized in that behalf by the University or independently, under conditions laid^down in the Statutes and Ordinances, and shall have passed the examination of the University under conditions prescribed in the Statutes and the Ordinances. (3) to confer honorary degrees or other distinctions on approved persons in the manner prescribed in the Statutes. (4) Deleted. (5) to co-operate with other Universities and autho­ rities in such manner and for such purposes as the University may determine ; (6) to institute teaching posts required by the Uni­ versity, and to appoint persons to such posts ; (7) to institute and award Fellowships, Scholarships, Exhibitions, Medals and Prizes in accordance with the Statutes and the Ordinances ; (8) to maintain Constituent Colleges and Halls and to recognize Associated Colleges, and Halls not maintained by the University ; (8-A) to inspect Associated Colleges and recognized Halls ; (9) to demand and receive such fees as may be pres­ cribed in the Ordinances ; (10) to supervise and control the residence and dis­ cipline of students of the University and to make arrangements for promoting their health and general welfare ; and (11) to do all such other acts and things, whether incidental to the powers aforesaid or not as may be requisite
