!& MIN. BID MAY RARE SOUL AUCTION

& A MELVIN DAVIS IT’S NO NEWS KE KE 1006 M- 307 An early sixties dancer of considerable rarity out of from one of the city’s many great artists. Stone mint copy is remarkable given the vintage of the vinyl. B LEE FIELDS TAKE ME BACK ANGLE 3 1008 M- 280 Takes me back to Cleethorpes 1975 to be honest, when this record was scarcely two years old – but even then, it wasn’t a common, everyday piece. Recent years have seen a big revival of this excellent track of course. Again, great condition. C EDITH BROWN YOU DID IT 4 BROTHERS 403 M- 175 0 Here’s one that crept in under the radar, a red-hot Chicago sixties mover that saw an odd copy (and it was never common) trade hands for very little until the current millennium. Now folks have awoken to the quality and found that it’s virtually non-existent in collections, really rare in fact. D JEANETTE PUT ME IN YOUR POCKET 20TH CENTURY 6683 M- 200 HARPER WD Wonder who this artist turned out to be? Rather like Rubin in our previous auction, she remains a total unknown as far as we are aware. A New York recording and, possibly, rarer than is commonly thought. E FRANKIE & THE MAN FROM SOUL JCP 1057 VG+ 250 DAMONS Worn-but-plays-OK, check the soundbite for confirmation of that fact. The group were from Raleigh, N.C. and Frankie was Frankie Presnell (actually the drummer), fortunately this white four-piece group usually employed a black lead singer. F EDWIN STARR YOU’RE MY MELLOW RIC TIC 120 M- 200 When our Martin Koppel found basically the ‘world stock’ of Ric-Tic’s in Detroit in 1976 this title was not there ever once in over a quarter of a million 45s. We’ve always known this to be a rarity ‘as new’, and that might just be a rare circumstance, in its own right. ! ! G PHIL ORSI LOVING ON BORROWED TIME WISE WORLD VG++ 200 62769 Also issued as the Vel-vets with the same title on the Number One label and played at the back end of the Wigan Casino years. Difficult to tell which is the first release but for sure, Mr. Orsi looks the nicer! H THE IN OTHER WORDS BOMBAY 4502 VG+ 900 FASCINATORS Beautiful doo-wop influenced 1964 group soul from Earl Washington’s Chicago label, a rare disc indeed which rather forgives the condition (check the soundbite). One of those 45s that came to prominence in the post-Wigan era i.e. Stafford, and a scarce 45 indeed. I ANN SEXTON YOU’VE BEEN GONE TOO IMPEL 103 M- 264 LONG Apparently on Seventy-Seven, on the first yellow label and the following orange/black reissue, this sold 90,000 copies. No such situation for the very first local label out of South Carolina (the music publishing was in Florida hence the long-lasting thought that this was a Floridian label, they even spelt Anne and husband Melvin Burton wrong on the song’s credits [Benton]). Whatever the history, this total classic simply has to be in every serious collection. J CYRE THE MORE THE MAN SPECTRUM 1162 M- 230 Very rare 1983 downtempo groover from a Spectrum label that must have been around for 20 years but without any releases for quite a few years prior to this one. You might wait quite a while before you see another. We’ve known of it for 30 years and this is our first copy in all that time. K THE M.V.P.’S TURNIN’ MY HEARTBEAT UP BUDDAH 262 D M- 275 Ignoring the incorrect possessive apostrophe on the group’s name, it turns out that this long- unknown outfit were actually, at one time, the Combinations on the Atlanta label Kimtone. Originally a Blackpool Mecca exclusive, this went on to the greater heights at Wigan (particularly via the ‘This England’ documentary). L TIMELESS (BABY) DON’T DO THIS TO ME BLACK FOREST VG++ 400 LEGEND 102115 A group from Columbus, on their first 1975 release – a rarer item than their Dawn-Lite 45 for sure and an excellent modern dancer with a neat ballad flip. As you will observe from the scan there is some water damage on the label, but the actual vinyl is pretty good by comparison. M MIND & MATTER I’M UNDER YOUR SPELL / M&M 001 M- 300 SUNSHINE LADY As we remember this record is from Minneapolis, a great 1977 modern double-sider penned by a young Jimmy “Jam” Harris. Take a listen to both sides on the soundbite. Great condition all round. N THE SEVEN I STILL LOVE YOU OKEH 7289 WD M- 325 SOULS Back in the heyday of i.e. the seventies, this wasn’t an in-demand, highly rated record at all. Cue the next decade and onwards and it has become one of the most desirous records from the legendary label. Beautiful condition. O POOKIE HUDSON THIS GETS TO ME JAMIE 1319 WD VG++ 510 Lead singer of the famous doo-wop group The Spaniels on one of his infrequent solo outings. Producer Bob Finiz is another that moved from doo-wop to soul and is something of an unheralded Northern Soul hero having produced ‘Girl Across The Street’, the Star-treks ‘Gonna Need Magic’, and many more.

! ! ! SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 STRINGS ‘N FABULOUS NEW YORK JET SET 1007 M- 15 THINGS Powerful instrumental, got a few spins back in the early Wigan years. 2 THE SOUL GIVE ‘EM LOVE STAX 0008 M- 10 CHILDREN An absolute soul drenched stonker from this great group. 3 BOBBY MOORE TRY TO HOLD ON SCEPTER 12417 M- 10 Follow up to ‘Anything Man’ has been unfairly overlooked. 4 THE BETCHA IF YOU CHECK IT OUT INNOVATION 8019 M- 15 QUADRAPHONICS Beautiful seventies midtempo – a massive Mecca spin at the time. 5 CLYDE WHY CAN’T WE GET DECCA 32753 M- 20 McPHATTER TOGETHER Not quite as good as ‘Give Me One More Chance’ off his Decca album, but pushing it all the way. 6 KENNY YOUNG AIN’T IT FUNNY WHAT LOVE SHARE 105 M- 15 CAN DO Excellent Van McCoy written/produced midtempo cut. He even owned the label! 7 EDWIN STARR LOVE (THE LONELY PEOPLE’S 1276 M- 15 PRAYER) To say this is one of Edwin’s greatest records is to tout it highly – but we aren’t overstating the case. 8 JIMMY HOLIDAY WHEN I’M LOVING YOU CROSSOVER 976 M- 10 Holiday’s final recording for Ray Charles’ label in 1974, but with much of a sixties sound about it. Got a few plays at the time. 9 NA ALLEN OPEN THE DOOR TO YOUR JANUS 197 M- 20 HEART Great version of the Darrell Banks song from Denise Lasalle’s cousin (!). 10 LOU JOHNSON MAGIC POTION (inst) BIG HILL 552 M- 15 As Simon Soussan would have said… ‘instrumental of course!’. Flipside to ‘Always Something There To Remind Me’.

RARE SOUL ALBUMS (All prices include UK p&p) 126 KIMBERLEY PASSIN CLOUDS U.S. FANTASY M- 100 BRIGGS Rare album that in actual fact is the great Kim Tolliver (her husband was Freddie Briggs). Superb vocals all the way with a plethora of deep tracks, but also the great midtempo album- only ‘If I Could Work A Miracle’. 127 JACKIE ROSS & LITTLE MILTON IN PERSPECTIVE U.S. GOLDEN EAR M- 30 Obscure 1981 double album sees a combination of sixties material and contemporary cuts from the time, including at least 2 or 3 album-only dancers. ! ! 128 SANDRA WRIGHT WOUNDED WOMAN UK DEMON M- 100 UK-only album reissued Sandra’s 1975 Stax material on LP for the first time (1989). Subsequently the superb ‘Midnight Affair’ which was previously unissued got massive crossover spins. 129 VARIOUS ARTISTS BLUES SOUL JAPANESE P-VINE VG++ 25 Rare Japanese-only double album of Mar-V-Lus/One-Der-Ful material, includes unissued including Syl Johnson’s ‘I’ve Been Talked About’ – a great soulful mover. VERY low price reflects water-damaged gatefold sleeve and non-mint (but plays fine) vinyl. 130 THE MODULATIONS IT’S ROUGH OUT THERE U.S. BUDDAH M- 30 Superb seventies group soul on every track but collectors shouldn’t miss the tremendous album-only ‘Love At Last’. 131 THE OLYMPICS SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW U.S. MIRWOOD M- 25 From the famed L.A. label the ‘Something New’ side features half a dozen of their Mirwood killers. The other side is their early sixties material. 132 BILL CODAY BILL CODAY JAPANESE P-VINE M- 50 1978 release of all Coday’s Crajon/Galaxy material (apart from ‘Right On Baby’ for some reason). Was difficult to locate even at the time. 133 LOLEATTA CRY TO ME U.S. AWARE M- 30 HOLLOWAY The album as a whole is a highlight of seventies southern soul, but enterprising Modern/Crossover spinners shouldn’t be without the great album-only ‘I Can’t Help Myself’. 134 SHARON CASH SHARON CASH U.S. PLAYBOY M- 25 The above Loleatta was rightly acclaimed as a soul giantess but the equally brilliant Sharon Cash is all but forgotten. Tremendous album with the fantastic ‘I’ll Always Be In Love With You’, quite capable of catching the soulful dancers’ ears from an LP-only circumstance. 135 TEMPTATIONS GETTIN READY UK TAMLA MOTOWN M- 25 Funny how albums we’ve stared at for years have a habit of biting back, in this case try the Tempt’s great version of ‘Who You Gonna Run To’ (album-only) as recently championed by Richard Searling. 136 THE VIBRATIONS NEW VIBRATIONS U.S. OKEH M- 40 Loads of their corking sixties stormers including the UK-only (on a 45) ‘One Mint Julep’ which is right in that ‘Gonna Get Along Without You Now’ groove (also included). Their great stomping version of ‘Secret Love’ is most certainly album-only (unless it came out in Cambodia or somewhere). 137 THE VIBRATIONS NEW VIBRATIONS UK COLUMBIA VG++ 35 Exactly as the above Okeh release but with an additional track in the shape of their version of ‘Shout’. 138 SLY, SLICK AND SLY, SLICK AND WICKED U.S. JU-PAR M- 30 WICKED Another strong all-round seventies album (1976) includes the great album-only ‘Love Is All Over The World’, a tremendous philly-styled dancer that, at over 6 minutes is rather too long to play out but is well worth owning. 139 EARL VAN DYKE THAT MOTOWN SOUND U.S. MOTOWN M- 40 Rare STEREO copy of Van Dyke’s album in which he covers a number of Motown hits of the time such as ‘Nowhere To Run’ and ‘Too Many Fish In The Sea’.
