CHRIS HIBBARD: ‘PERFORMANCE’ Mixed media, watercolour, pencil and collage on etching proof, 2018 ARTIST’S STATEMENT: “One of my preoccupations as a painter / printmaker is picture making. My work is usually constructed by addition and subtraction, through collage and assemblage, which invariably result in a visual archaeology. The relationship of cinema to my process, to time through the moment frozen in an image, is another concern. I utilise pre-existing sources, often referencing art history (Degas, Miss Lala at the Cirque Fernando), history and literature.” ‘SAWDUST AND SEQUINS: THE ART OF THE CIRCUS’ 24 March - 3 June: Royal West of Academy, Queen’s Road, BRISTOL, BS8 1PX. FRESH: ART FAIR This new contemporary art fair in Cheltenham last year instantly established itself as a key player in the provincial art fair calendar, and the April 2018 show promises to push the bar still higher. Nearly 4,500 art lovers flocked to Cheltenham Racecourse in May last year to visit Fresh: Art Fair. With 46 leading UK galleries showing 5,000 works by 400 artists, Fresh: instantly became the biggest contemporary art fair between London and Manchester. “It was extraordinary”, says co-founder Eleanor Wardle. “We knew we had wonderful galleries showing world-class artists. We knew we had something for everyone - original prints and paintings, sculpture, glass and ceramics from £100 to £50,000 - but an hour before the doors opened we had literally no idea how many people would come and whether they would buy. Then they came, 4,300 of them, buying £500,000 of art over the 3 days. Not bad for a first fair!”. A total of 378 paintings and sculptures were purchased, including work by artists including Sir Peter Blake and Damien Hirst, Alan Halliday, Paul Oz, Iryna Yermolova, Anthony Amos and Henrik Simonsen, plus many rising stars. Thirty one of the 2017 exhibitors will be returning, each with one or two new artists. They include Panter & Hall of Pall Mall and Gallery Different also from London, Lime Tree Gallery from Bristol, Brownston Gallery from Modbury, and Camburn Fine Art from Chinon in France. New galleries this year include the highly regarded John Davies Gallery from Moreton-in-Marsh and Gallery Pangolin, part of Pangolin Editions, the biggest sculpture foundry in Europe. From further afield there’ll be Byard Art from Cambridge, Carina Haslam Art, The Fine Art Consultancy of London and Tokyo, Cameron Contemporary, White Space Art from Salcombe, and The Doorway Gallery from Dublin. For the first time in the art fair world, there will be a dedicated outdoor sculpture park showing some 70 large outdoor pieces by 15 artists. Once again there will be painters and sculptors working live for visitors to watch and quiz, and there will again be a programme of talks by art experts. Fine art auctioneers Bonhams will be returning to advise visitors on selling their old art. Visitors are invited to bring a photograph and background information about any pre-contemporary work they might like to sell. Arts Council supported Own Art will also be on site to make owning art easy and affordable, with interest free credit for purchases between £100 and £25,000 repayable over 10 months. CHEDDAR ARTS FRINGE FESTIVAL 2018 A walking arts trail around the village 5th, 6th and 7th May OVER 30 ARTISTS WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS Download map www.cheddarartists.co.uk ‘GIPSVIKA’ JANETTE KERR: NORTH Janette Kerr is the ultimate sea painter. Her work begins outside with the salt in her paint and the sea heaving and crashing around her, the wilder the better. Not only will she be there on the rocks or in a boat painting and drawing, but she will have studied the archives, looking for the stories of the people who have lived, fished, explored or even died there, as well as working on a series of projects with environmentalists, oceanographers, scientists and other artists to enrich her active engagement with the places she paints. Back in the studio she has time to gather all these ideas and feelings together combining them with the energy she captured in her studies en plein air, to create much larger drawings and oil paintings. The powerful works that result combine a Romantic experience of the sublime - both terrifying and thrilling - with exploratory contemporary abstraction. She moves between the representational and the abstract underpinning all her work with exceptional drawing skills. The exhibition includes three large and spectacular graphite drawings. In 2016 Janette Kerr sailed in a tall ship from Svalbard in the Norwegian High Arctic to experience the vastness of mountains and glaciers appearing and disappearing in flowing mist, the darkness, the cold and the silence, interspersed with the massive crashes of glaciers calving followed, after a pause, by the sea’s dramatic response. The boat sailed close to the glaciers on areas of the map marked as solid ice. The Arctic work in this exhibition is a response to that experience as she grapples to express the fear and majesty of the place. Janette’s brushwork is loose and expressive, capturing the essence of constant change in a place where everything is moving and time takes on a whole new meaning. Glaciers thousands of years old are melting. Mountains revealed through the mist may never been seen before. The newly exposed land should be pristine, but there is rubbish. Where there should be snow, there was rain. The paintings show a place so vast and timeless that its fragility and change is like a 21st century twist on the Romantic concept of infinite, uncontrollable, overwhelming sensation. In his latest body of work he has revisited past territory reconsidering perennial concerns. These new paintings are large and the girl featured in many of them in her heavy hiking books is entirely a figment of his imagination, a fictitious muse who he says leads him, he knows not where. Hence, the title of the show, ‘Where to from here?’. Davies’ work is rooted in his understanding of paint, exquisite hues haunt the flat backgrounds of his paintings, determinately matte and beautifully modulated. The narrative provided by the figurative element could almost be incidental to this subtle palette of earthy colours. But they are inter-dependent: the solid structure/dwelling with one door and one window hovering centre-canvas, a cacophony of rooks perched on branches, vessel-shaped trees, oversized black pansies are the product of intense interior musings and of his wanderings through the Somerset countryside. These paintings touch on reality but subvert it. They could be abstract but Davies leaves sufficient visual reference for identification, giving a way in to his thought processes but leaving other minds free to wander around these works, to make their own connections. All his observations are absorbed into the melting pot of his mind and re-emerge with an element of biography and frequently of humour. Scale is important. Leaves vie with bird forms for the same amount of pictorial space, huge pansy heads reach up to and beyond the ceiling edges of his large canvases and are rooted at the lower edge by solid three-dimensional leaves. The delicacy of paper-thin petals, almost too heavy for their weedy stems and the negative associations of the word pansy are firmly rebutted by the scale and monumentality of the painted flower. Achieving a looseness of style is something of an obsession with her and she cites as influences the early work of Peter Doig, partly due to a mutual connection to Canada, Caspar David Friedrick, Gerhard Richter’s landscape and seascape paintings and Anselm Kiefer. The immediacy of this process allows her to work through ideas very quickly. The rawness and fragility of the collagraph surface, a card plate textured with cement, polyfilla and glue, often means that only one or two prints can be made, thus instilling a sense of improvisation that can be carried over into the subsequent etchings.
