My dear Friends,

Well the time has come! On October 28th I announced in church that Felicity and I will be leaving these two lovely parishes at the end of January. Many of you knew that we had been looking to buy a house in Devon and you have been so supportive and loving through these months and we would like to thank you very warmly. I have written to the Bishops (and others) to tell them that the resignation will be as from January 31st, though my last Sunday, and therefore active ministry, will be on 27th. Leaving a particular role of ministry always has its sadness, as we will be saying goodbye to many people who have become good friends, but of course, there is always the excitement too of a new chapter of our lives.

For me this will be a big change – retirement! After over 46 years in parish ministry, yes it all began in 1972 when I was a mere 23, it will mean a real change of life- style. I have plans of what I might do, including possibly some writing based on my

78 7 December 2018 December 2018 BERE REGIS BELLRINGERS on Wednesday 12th December in Briantspuddle Village Hall. Residents are reminded that the meeting is open to the public and Councillors would welcome the views of parishioners who can express their thoughts during RINGING FOR REMEMBRANCE DAY 2018 – public participation which starts at 7pm. Written submissions can be made to the 100 YEARS ON Parish Clerk at [email protected].

For the morning Service of Remembrance on Sunday th November 11 we rang with the bells half-muffled for the Jonathan Haigh solemn occasion. By attaching a leather cover to one side of each clapper, the bells ring with a quieter, eerie tone At the November meeting Jonathan Haigh tendered his resignation from the Parish whenever struck by that side. The haunting, echoing effect was particularly Council. Jonathan informed his colleagues that he needed to spend more time moving for those gathering quietly round the War Memorial before 11 o’clock on preparing for a move to Devon that he and his wife are planning in the Spring. this, the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice. Jonathan expressed how much he had enjoyed his time as a Parish Councillor. Responding the Chairman thanked him for the contribution he has made to the Ringing half-muffled calls for an extra effort from the ringers. We ring more slowly Council and in particular for his well-considered deliberations concerning all issues. than is usual and it is more difficult to keep the striking regular. So it was very gratifying that our three newest recruits had practiced diligently enough to take The Parish Council wishes Jonathan and his wife Penny the very best of luck for the part and to earn commemorative insignia to mark the occasion. Well done future they are planning. Nancy Jones, Moira Mathers and Norman Reid. It was a special occasion too for our lightest bell, the one that sounds first on every round. She was cast in 1919 to commemorate the cessation of the Great War and bears the simple inscription “PAX 1919”.

Bell No 1 – “PAX 1919” Bell No 6 – “Bere Regis Community 2014”

In the evening, we joined ringers throughout the whole of the UK, in “Ringing out for Peace” as part of the “Battle’s Over Tribute”. A happier occasion this, with the muffles removed, and the sound of the bells floating down to those gathered around the beacon lit on Souls Moor.

8 77 December 2018 December 2018

This was a chance for our heaviest bell, the 6th, to sound out and acknowledge the War Memorial Repair generosity of our parishioners who contributed to the refurbishment of all the bells During the process of cleaning the War Memorial panels it was discovered that in 2014 so that they could play their part in great civic occasions such as this. The some repair work is needed. The War Memorial Trust has once again been new headstock of Bell No. 6 has cast into it the dedication “BERE REGIS approached for a grant and 50% of the total cost has been awarded to the COMMUNITY 2014” Parish Council to complete the work. At its November meeting the Parish Council approved the remaining cost of the work to be funded from the Parish Precept. The total cost of the work is £1,485 plus VAT and work will be undertaken in the Spring of 2019.

Southover Farm Slurry Lagoon Planning Application – WD/ D/18/001035 A discussion surrounding the proposed conditions that may be applied to any grant of permission of this application took place at the Parish Councils

November meeting. This was in the light of representations made by the applicant to extend the times of trailer movements as well as increasing their number from those proposed in an initial draft of conditions by . The Parish Council expressed considerable concerns around the proposals made by the applicant which indicate more tractor and trailer movements than were disclosed in the original planning application. The Parish Council will discuss its Ringers in the Tower after “Battle’s Over Tribute” concerns with Dorset County Council. It is proposed to revisit the issues again at the December Parish Council Meeting In addition to our newest ringers, those taking part during the historic day were Adrian Standfield (Tower Captain), Jenny Clifford, Felicity Masheder, Liz Webb, Terry Kent, Alan Townsend and John Cleave.

All of us ringers want to take this opportunity to wish all of you listeners and readers a very Happy Christmas and New Year!

New Years Eve We’re planning another extravaganza to welcome in 2019. All this will be occurring right on your doorstep so you won’t need to walk far to get home. The doors will open at 8.30, but we will need a general idea of numbers attending so you will no doubt be pestered by organisers to commit yourselves.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to commend and congratulate all the members of The Village Hall Committee (and our minutes secretary) for their steadfast good sense, their commitment to the Charity and its aims, and their good humoured approach to the ‘job’. I also want to thank all those who proffer willing help to the charity and those who support events (fundraising or otherwise) with cheerfulness and goodwill. The Perfect Place

The pains are getting stronger all the time, I am cold, cold and tired. I stretch myself and arch to ease my back, but it’s impossible to get comfortable.

Joseph looks so tired. He’s afraid. Afraid that I shall give birth to this baby while I’m still on the donkey. But I know You have a plan, Lord.

Poor Joseph, poor dear Joseph. We’ve only known each other a short time, and I seem to have brought him nothing but grief. No one else believed me, Joseph. They insist this child belongs to another man. Together we have suffered strife of tongues. The gossips had their day.

Is my little one determined to be born tonight. Everything is waiting at home, the crib Joseph has carved ...the soft linen I have put ready.

70 15 December 2018 December 2018

But You, O Lord, You have a perfect plan.

No room, no room. We are refused everywhere we go. My heart is aching for my husband, I see the disappointment in his face. I know he is doing his best’. And You, O Lord have a perfect plan. Lord God, you sent an angel to tell me I should carry your Son, but where can I lay his head? Have you planned a great room, a palace for his birth, Will there be lambs’ wool for his bed, and servants to fetch and carry? Small load £80 Large load £175 Yes ...these are the things befitting a king.

Is this it? Is this the place? I lay my tired body on the straw. The beasts of burden watch over me ... their warm silver breath hangs in the chilly air. Joseph attends to my needs. O Lord, surely this is not part of your plan? Do you mean this to be the place where the King of kings is born,

Shall men say of him, “He was born in a stable ...?” Pam Weaver When you respond to advertisers, do please tell them you saw their advert in this magazine - it helps them monitor the ‘He came down to earth from heaven .....’ effectiveness of their advert and helps us generate more We all know that Christmas is about Jesus’ birth. But in all the fun and celebration, or for some people in the loneliness and heartache, it’s so easy to advertising revenue!! lose sight of why Jesus was born. Jesus’ birth is all about God’s good news for us, and Christmas is for saying thank you to God for giving His own son. It’s also time to remember that when Jesus was thirty-three years old He gave His life for us, so that those who believe in Him might receive new life. Whenever we see suffering in the world, or greed and selfishness causing problems in the home and in the nation, we see the results of people ignoring God. And all of us are part of this. No one is so good they don’t need Jesus – no one is too bad to be turned away by Him. We all need forgiveness and the new life only God can give.

Today God wants you to have the power to live up to His standards. This is the best Christmas invitation you are ever going to receive.

Don’t turn it down. 839209

Winter Management Plan We have recently reviewed and updated our winter maintenance plan, making sure we are ready for any eventualities if we get a spell of adverse weather over the winter. We are currently ensuring all grit bins are full and ready to be used. If there is a spell of snow or heavy ice, these can be used to make the paths more accessibl. We would encourage all residents to try and clear the areas near to their house and particularly help any elderly or vunerable neighbours if possible.

Local buildings will generally be retained to provide speedy access to the public but there will be a major rationalisation of assets, including buildings, to ensure we achieve better and more effective use of both buildings and the multiple IT systems.

with the present style of housing, particularly in the developments close to the present Conservation Area. We have chosen sites which are as close as possible to the village centre, so that a sense of community is maintained and we don’t end up with straggling development too far outside the village. We are anxious not just to sustain existing community facilities, but to improve them if possible. There will be more on that in a future article. Please be aware though, that we can’t magically produce new shops. Premises have to be available and business people have to be certain that a new venture will see enough customers to thrive. Finally, we have been anxious to protect and enhance our local green environment. The Parish Council’s acquisition of Souls Moor and the green space near the stream, coupled with Dr Brian May’s woodland plantations has, we believe, already added hugely to the beauty of our environment and facilities. We aim, through the plan, to add more to areas of open green space, and that in turn should allow us to improve recreational facilities still further. In future articles we will develop these themes in more detail. In the meantime, please take a look at the plan itself and the FAQs which are on the website at www.bereregisparishcouncil.co.uk Ian Ventham

26 59 December 2018 December 2018 MILBORNE MOVIES

Milborne Movies are showing ‘The Greatest Showman’ on December 7th,. Doors and Bar open at 7.00pm and the film starts at 7.30 pm.

This is a musical many people have asked for, with songs written by Oscar and Tony Award-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. It tells the story of P.T.Barnum and stars Hugh Jackman. Here are excerpts from a review by Doug Jamieson for the Jam Report. ‘...musicals are often crafted for pure cinematic entertainment. They’re here to dazzle and delight with glitz, glamour, and, of course, a whole swag of song-and- dance numbers. And that’s precisely what you’ll get with The Greatest Showman – a film that’s as big and extravagant as musicals get. It’s basically Moulin Rouge meets Chicago, with a detour into La La Land territory… Jackman….once again cements his status as the best song-and-dance man in the business. His impressive vocal ability is matched equally by his phenomenal dance skills, and he turns on that Jackman charm that you cannot help but fall for. His Barnum is flawed but well-intentioned, and it’s hard not to cheer for the showman to succeed.’

58 27 December 2018 December 2018 NEWS FROM WESTMINSTER

This year, as for the past few years, I have held a Christmas card design competition for local schools. All the school in the constituency are invited to submit their designs, and then the best are chosen by a local artist. These are then made into my Christmas cards that are sent all across the constituency to charities, libraries, business and organisations. Look out for them! One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is when I get the chance to visit schools in the constituency, or speak to them when they visit Parliament. I was delighted that my office were able to arrange for one of our local schools, Bearwood School, to not only visit the Houses of Parliament, but also go into Downing Street and stand by the famous door of Number 10. Parliament has been very eventful recently, but I have also been continuing with my constituency visits and surgeries. In Westminster I recently attended a Wildlife Trust reception and met young people from across the country involved in local wildlife trusts to hear their views about the natural environment. I was also pleased to be part of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project. This is a network of forest conservation initiatives to mark Her Majesty's lifetime of service to the Commonwealth. I was given 5 trees to be planted in the constituency - two silver birch, two rowan, and a hazel which will be planted in the constituency. Many people have written to me about the availability of diabetes glucose monitoring so that they no longer have to prick their finger multiple times a day. I was really pleased by the recent government announcement that Flash monitors will now be funded so that they are available for everyone who is eligible. This will make life for people with type 1 diabetes much easier. However you are celebrating, whether with friends or family, I wish you all a happy Christmas and a peaceful new year. I will be continuing my regular surgeries around the constituency; please do get in touch if you would like to meet or need my help with any particular issue. You can email me on [email protected] or contact my office on 01202 624216. You can also follow what I’ve been doing on Twitter @Michael4MDNP or Facebook www.facebook.com/michael4MDNP
