  • Congregational Chapel's Graveyard
https://www.lymeregismuseum.co.uk/research Congregational Chapel Coombe Street, Lyme Regis The Search for a Graveyard Graham Davies, July 2021 The Dinosaurland Fossil Museum in Coombe Street, Lyme Regis, occupies a grade I listed building, a former Congregational (more recently, United Reform) Chapel which closed its doors to religious services in 1985. The Congregational (Independent) Church was formed in Lyme in 1662 following the ejection of the vicar, the Rev A Short, for non-compliance with the Act of Uniformity. He subsequently held services in his own house in Church Street and elsewhere, but was constantly hounded by the authorities. He died in 1697. In 1734 the Rev J Whitty became the new minister and under his guidance a chapel was built in Coombe Street in 1755. Dinosaurland, June 2013 In 2012, research team members, Diane Shaw, Derek Perrey and Graham Davies reviewed the Museum’s Congregational Chapel archives. They found a reference to a ‘curious little graveyard’ on the Lynch, belonging to the Congregational Chapel. In 1841, on behalf of the Chapel, a piece of ground, with two cottages on it (ref 192, 1841 tithe map), situated on the Lynch, was purchased by Mr Theophilus B Goddard from Mr Fowler, of the Hart Inn, at a price of £250. Extensive alterations were made to the cottages, and the part to be used as the burial ground was walled off from the rest. Mr Goddard hoped the Church would repay him his £250 through rents, burial fees and subscriptions. Through lack of subscriptions, Mr Goddard was set free by the Church in 1873 to dispose of the cottages as he saw fit, leaving them the graveyard.

Introduction The aim of this project is to identify ways to safeguard important scientific fossils from the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site. The identification of placements in accredited museums would enable intellectual access for scientific study and education. Two consulting companies Weightman Associates and Hidden Horizons have been commissioned to undertake this Project. Weightman Associates is a partnership of Gill Weightman and Alan Weightman; they have been in partnership for twenty years working on museum and geology projects. Hidden Horizons Ltd is a museum and heritage consultancy formed in 2013 by Will Watts. When UNESCO granted World Heritage status to the Dorset and East Devon Coast in 2001 it recognised the importance of the Site’s geology and geomorphology. The Jurassic Coast Management Plan 2014-2019 has as one of its aims to “To Conserve and enhance the Site and its setting for science, education and public enjoyment” and the Plan states that a critical success factor is “An increase in the number of scientifically important fossils found along the site that are acquired by or loaned back to local accredited museums”.

S I D M O U T H Newsletter September 2017 Issue 48 From the Chairman I closed my piece in the last newsletter by wishing you a great summer unfortunately that has now passed and, according to the met office, we are now officially in Autumn! One of the "hot topics" for the last newsletter was the proposed takeover of the lease of St Francis Church Hall by the Sidmouth Town Band, this has been delayed with no further developments likely until December this year. I'm confident that many organisations, apart from the U3A, hope that the layout of the hall does not change regardless of who operates the lease. It is with some sadness that I've learnt of the passing of Joy Pollock, a founder member of Sidmouth U3A. Joy along with Madge White and June Newbould were the three ladies who met at the Sidmouth Sports Centre and decided to create a steering committee to set-up a U3A branch in Sidmouth. That small seed planted in October 1993 with 15 members has blossomed into our present branch with approaching 350 members. The original membership fee was £5 per head but interestingly the attendance charge for a monthly meeting was 50p the same as it is today! The U3A which Joy helped to start was very different to the organisation we have today, however, when Joy attended the anniversary lunch in 2014 she seemed to approve of the way the branch had developed. There will be those who remember Joy and mourn the passing of one our founder members.

GEOLOGY, FOSSILS AND ROCKWATCH MAPPERTON EVENT SERIES 2020 Exploring fossils, geology and the bubonic plague at Mapperton Quarry in Dorset Dr. Robert Chandler Geology, Fossils and Mapperton Mapperton is a small village between Bridport and Beaminster in Dorset. In this area there is a quarry previously known as ‘Sheepwash quarry’ that is of considerable geological interest. As the name suggests the quarry used to be used to wash sheep. There was a gate with a pit to keep the animals free of disease by bathing them in disinfectant. In early times many village residents were killed by the plague. Question: When did the Bubonic Plague happen? Until recently a tree stood near the quarry reminding The ‘posy tree’ remembering plague us of those who lost their lives. The tree has now victims at Mapperton gone having rotted and become unstable over the years. We will make a virtual visit to the quarry, now known as Coombe quarry commemorating those who died and highlighting some interesting history of the area. This is rather relevant now as our visit has been postponed by Corona virus. Hopefully we can return at a later time? The quarry we will visit stands on some of the highest ground in the area. It consists of limestone deposited as part of the Jurassic System (the rocks deposited during the Jurassic Period) around 175 million years old. The limestones are called ‘Inferior Oolite’. In this case ‘Inferior’ means below the rocks of the Great Oolite commonly seen around Bath. Coombe Quarry viewed from the air 1 Question: What is an oolite? Now look it up! In the 1990s the site was purchased to house farm buildings and this involved clearing the faces of the old quarry.
