The evaluation was implemented as telephone interview. y Of the answerers were eight person’s customers, five persons employee within social ‐ and the health care sector and 3 people’s relatives to the customers. 11.5.2009 Kaj Söderman, SGNet Results and Conclusions y The phone was easy to use, even for seniors with minor dementia. All seniors where 80+ y Video, eye‐contact with the patient was more of use to the nursing personell than the patients y Savings trough less unnecessary trips, by diagnose trough the phone. y Good image quality an advantage in tending diabetes by reading the readings from the diabetes pen. y Broadband technolgy, mostly wireless connections, caused some extra obstacles y Thunderstorms and other weather phenomenons caused disturbances in electric distributions and in signal quality. y Too many devices for most of the 80+ persons to handle. y The municipalities redeemed the phones for use in elderlycare y The expectation for the project were fullfilled 11.5.2009 Kaj Söderman, SGNet Business? y One stakeholder in the project was a private company, Rehab‐center in Kimito, who had clients in Houtskär and Västanfjärd.     The Finnish Archipelago Coast from AD 500 to 1550 – a Zone of Interaction Tapani Tuovinen [email protected], [email protected] Abstract New archaeological, historical, paleoecological and onomastic evidence indicates Iron Age settle- ment on the archipelago coast of Uusimaa, a region which traditionally has been perceived as deso- lated during the Iron Age. This view, which has pertained to large parts of the archipelago coast, can be traced back to the early period of field archaeology, when an initial conception of the archipelago as an unsettled and insignificant territory took form. Over time, the idea has been rendered possible by the unbalance between the archaeological evidence and the written sources, the predominant trend of archaeology towards the mainland (the terrestrical paradigm), and the history culture of wilderness. Wilderness was an important platform for the nationalistic constructions of early Finnishness. The thesis about the Iron Age archipelago as an untouched no-man’s land was a history politically convenient tacit agreement between the Finnish- and the Swedish-minded scholars. It can be seen as a part of the post-war demand for a common view of history. A geographical model of the present-day archaeological, historical and palaeoecological evi- dence of the archipelago coast is suggested. Swedísh Settlement By Gunnar Damström According to C.F. Meinander, the first Swedish emigrants landed in southwestern Finland in the latter half of the 13th century. The Finnish-speak- ing inhabitants who had lived in the area since the beginning of the Middle Ages were primarily farmers1. Soon after, Swedish-speaking settlers arrived in Kyrkslätt, west of what is now Hels- ingfors. Based on archaeological finds (or lack of finds) the Kyrkslätt area had been unpopulated during the Iron Age 500 BC – c.1150 AD 2. The Swedish immigrants built simple log cab- ins, cultivated the soil, and kept cattle. Oxen and horses were used. The most common grains were rye, barley, kale, rutabaga and peas in addition to flax and hemp. A sparse population spread over the Kyrkslätt Parish in the 14th and 15th centuries. The village of Jorvas comprised the homesteads of Jorvas, Gillobacka, Kvis, Nägels, and Ingvalsby. A bay extends from the Gulf of Finland deeply into the Parish of Esbo (Espoo). Research has shown how territorially concentrated historical minorities have used immigrants to favour their own nation-building projects. While these minorities to some extent operate like a majority within their federal state or province, this paper explores how constitutionally bilingual Finland, having a Swedish-speaking non-territorial minority with the same linguistic rights as the majority, governs immigrant integration. It investigates the implications of the strong legal and weak societal status of Swedish for immigrant integration by connecting scholarship on liberal multiculturalism and integration in multilingual states to laws, reports and interviews on integration in Swedish-speaking Finland. It shows tensions between Finland-Swedish integration aspirations and state level policies promoting a majority-monolingual integration. Unlike minorities with federal protection, the non-territorial Swedish-speaking minority largely relies on the voluntary choice of immigrants to choose Swedish as their language of integration. Structural obstacles, however, hinder this choice in bilingual regions, having resulted in political debates and actions. This article bridges research on Finnish multiculturalism and research on integration policy in contexts where historical minorities are present by introducing a non-territorial, formerly dominant minority to the research field.
