Dear Parishioners,

It has been four months since I was ordained as a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Cleveland by Bishop Perez. Leading up to the day of ordinaon, there was a lot of speculaon about what our parish assignment would be, and I was excited to hear that I was assigned here. My wife Lee Anna and I are very grateful for the many ways the community of St. John of the Cross has welcomed and embraced us.

The process of Diaconate formaon is a five-year process. The first year is called Aspirancy, which is a me of discernment to determine if there is an authenc call to the Diaconate. God's intenon is revealed during the formaon process. From the very beginning, it was explained that I would not necessarily be assigned to my home parish, which was Saint John Vianney in Mentor.

The deacon is called to serve the Church and the community in three areas: the Ministry of the Word of God, the Ministry of the Liturgy/Worship, and the Ministry of Charity and Jusce. The deacon funcons in all three areas: service in the transmission of the Word, service in the celebraon of the sacraments, and service in the community’s acve love.

I have been able to serve in the transmission of the Word, and most recently in the celebraon of the sacrament of bapsm a couple of weeks ago, when I had the honor of bapzing one-year old Treasure. It was a joy to see our parish community gathering around the bapsmal font as we welcomed Treasure along with her family into the Chrisan community of St. John of the Cross.

As I reflected back on these last four months, I realized that my connecon to this church community started over thirty years ago, when my wife and I were dang. She lived close by, and we would aend the Sunday evening Mass at the Church on top of the hill. We loved the music, the atmosphere, and the vibrancy of the Liturgy. We were so impressed with the music that we asked a few members of the choir to provide music for our wedding. I am happy to say that the Liturgy hasn’t missed a beat (pun intended).

I am looking forward to geng to know and parcipate in the different ministries of the parish. I am also looking forward to growing in faith together, so we as one body of Jesus Christ can go out into the community to search for the lost sheep and feed the hungry, both physically and spiritually.

On Monday, September 16, between 6:30pm-7:30 pm, we will be hosng a Eucharisc Holy Hour. “We begin to grow in our “interior knowledge of the Lord” as we contemplate his words, his life, and his real presence before us (St. Ignaus of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises, 104).”

Please mark your calendars and spend an hour together with the Lord as we grow in spirit, knowledge, and wisdom together as one body of Jesus Christ.

Peace in Christ...... Deacon Tom
