OF SCRIPTURE: February 24, 2019 - 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time I sometimes spend more money than I should. I make decisions based This Sunday, Jesus continues his challenging . upon my wants and not my needs. Those actions can create a financial "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who difficulty or circumstance where more sacrifice is needed. Instant curse you, pray for those who mistreat you ? Give to everyone who asks gratification or selfish impulses can create havoc in one's bank account, of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it marriage, or family. All these issues to deal with simply because I back." Words like these are challenging! Many of us have grown up in a wanted what I wanted and I got it. Yes, it sounds like the actions of a culture of independence and retaliation against those who harm us. child.

Today's Gospel reminds us that the way of the world is not necessarily However, I know I am not alone. We all can easily find ourselves acting the way of the . in this manner. This is why it struck me to listen once again to the words In many spiritual texts, describe the first stage of the spiritual life of Jesus when he says, "Do to others as you would have them do to as mercenary love of God. That is, we love Him because he "pays" us you." The words are reminiscent of another of Jesus' phrases, "Love with graces and good things. Consider for a moment, why do you do the your neighbor as yourself." The problem is that too often I would like for good that you do? Take volunteering, for example. How often do we talk others to fulfill my wants instead of needs, and I can seemingly love about the good feelings service evokes and how you "get so much more myself by doing what I already mentioned above. than you give." This is still based on an attitude of return on our A stewardship way of life means that I wisely steward what I have, and I investment. Would we volunteer if we knew it was good to do, but we cannot give what I do not have. Have you ever given someone a present didn't "feel" good afterward? What if the people we helped seemed you couldn't afford and think that was love? It wasn't. We don't show ungrateful, or if someone at the food pantry stole $20 out of our purse? love by giving what we do not possess. We show love by meeting It can be difficult to love people when we think we might not get anything another's needs and by sharing our very self with them. At our core, back. "For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?" what we long for from others more than anything else is love. Would I As Christians, we are called to imitate God. We follow a God who loves have others give me lavish gifts and shower me with empty compliments not only His closest friends, but who loves betrayers, deniers, and or would I have them give to me something much more valuable: the crucifiers. The Christian walk is one of perseverance and sacrifice. What love in their hearts? In turn, I need to love myself more by realizing that does your love look like? no purchase will offer fulfillment more than the love of God shown to me in Christ Jesus. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

"Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you." We do not like Children’s Corner ! hearing these words, but they are at the heart of Jesus' teaching. When we are hurt, we want to get defensive and fight back. We prefer engaging in battle with something that is negative and evil rather than returning a heart of love. It is easy to love those who will love us back and much harder to love those who may not. But there is no credit to be found in simply surrounding ourselves with friends. Jesus wants to push us out of our comfort zones. We still find ourselves judging others and condemning them when the order of the Gospel is forgiveness and mercy. Why are we so unwilling to let go of the control? Perhaps the answer is found in a failure to love and an absence of faith.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

First Reading Today's reading is an excerpt from a longer story of how King David spared Saul's life. David was determined not to murder Saul - "the Lord's anointed" - despite Saul seeking to kill David. What does this reveal about the character of King David? Second Reading As Paul begins to draw to a close his discussion on the resurrection of Christ, he contrasts the first man (Adam) with the last Adam (Christ). What do you find most interesting about Paul's insights about Adam and Christ? Gospel Reading Jesus implores his followers to love their enemies and to stop judging
