From the Desk of Fr. Paul March 19, 2017 Quench Your Thirst Permanently It was, dear friends in the Lord, St. Augustine of Hippo, who having learned the hard way from his own sinful past, said this after he was converted to Christ: “O Lord, You have made our hearts for Yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” The truth is, that if we look for meaning, purpose, and happiness in anyone or anything here on this earth, making of them idols and living a sinful life, we will always be thirsting and never satisfied for what we so desperately desire. The Samaritan Woman we meet in the Gospel for this Third Sunday of Lent (John 4:5-42), is a perfect example of a person looking for happiness in all the wrong places and living out the miserable consequences of having made all the wrong choices in her life. In her search for happiness, she went through five men and was living with a sixth, thinking that each of these relationships would make her feel loved and wanted, and satisfy her thirst for happiness. Instead, as she sinfully and selfishly used them and allowed herself to be used and abused, the end result was that she was now miserable, unhappy, and ostracized from everyone, the subject of gossip and the constant recipient of insults. Her life had become a disaster, that is until she met the Lord. In Him, her search for true love came to an end, because only He can satiate our deepest desire for happiness and love. In fact, when you let Christ in and He becomes the center of your life, you have everything; you have become rich, even if you don’t have a penny in your pocket! With the Lord, you see things in the right perspective and have your life in order. Only then can you love others properly, without selfishness! Only then do you see the beautiful gifts and the good things of this world that God has given you, and use them as He intended! A story is told about the formidable conqueror of ancient history, Alexander the Great. In the Autumn of the year 325 BC, he decided to cross the Gedrosian Desert. The reason was because no one had ever been able to do it before him and he believed no challenge was too great for him, or so he thought. He and His men were veteran fighters, after all! Unfortunately, after many years of being veteran conquerors, he and his men loved their wine a bit too much. Many of them loved drinking so much that they had become alcoholics, in fact. So, as they attempted to cross the vast desert, they sated their thirst with wine alone! The result of all of that wonderful and very pleasurable wine, is that many of them died. The alcohol had dehydrated them and they dropped dead in their tracks. Life without Christ is like that! When we seek happiness in anything, or anything but Him, when we lead disor- dered sinful lives, then misery in this life and ultimately hell in the next is the result! So, you who read this and know Him, be grateful and never take our Lord’s friendship for granted. But if you are reading this and the opposite is true in your life, because you are enslaved by sin as a result of all the wrong choices you have made; stop your searching for happiness in all the wrong places. Let Christ in! You will find what you have always desired but could never ob- tain: true love, joy, happiness, and meaning in your life! He will be all that you have always been looking for, and so much more! Your thirst will be quenched and your search will be over! Fr.
