Above all, I am most thankful to my parents, Peter and Susan (and our cats), for supporting, encouraging, illuminating, and calming me in moments of anxiety, frustration, excitement, and joy all these years. -iv- Abstract The aim of this research is to consider Dante’s Christology in terms of Augustine’s hermeneutical practice. This thesis examines four figures in Dante’s Commedia who exemplify reading through proper and improper hermeneutical approaches and how their approaches are related to good and bad forms of love, which Augustine identifies as caritas and cupiditas: Francesca and Virgil from the Inferno, Statius from the Purgatorio, and Piccarda from the Paradiso. This thesis also examines moments in which Dante invites readers to engage with the Commedia hermeneutically. In applying Augustine’s hermeneutics of caritas, as presented in De doctrina Christiana, to a reading of Dante’s Commedia, this research considers how the Commedia directs readers to conduct themselves toward God and neighbour in accordance with Christ’s teachings. Augustine’s rules for Biblical interpretation are founded on his gloss on Jesus Christ’s words to love and enjoy God on God’s own account and to love and enjoy neighbours in relation to God (De doctrina Christiana 3.10.16). Christ’s commandments set the standard for Christian morality and provide the hermeneutical key to understanding Scripture and the ideal form of love that Christ himself paradigmatically exemplifies. Those who follow Augustine’s rules of interpretation know that all of Scripture reveals these two commandments and offers examples of how to live Christologically in accordance with these teachings. Final Reflections............................................................................... 224 Bibliography ..................................................................................... 226 -1- Chapter 1 Introduction The primary aim of this research is to test a hermeneutical approach to Dante’s Commedia through Augustine of Hippo’s hermeneutics of caritas as they are presented in De doctrina Christiana. Two key aspects of this hermeneutical approach are the distinction between good and bad forms of love, and the relationship between good and bad forms of love and right and wrong reading. Augustine’s hermeneutics of caritas are Christological because they are anchored to Christ’s Double Love Commandment, which Christ himself paradigmatically exemplifies: Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et in tota anima tua, et in tota mente tua. Hoc est maximum, et primum mandatum. Secundum autem simile est huic: Diliges proximum tuum, sicut teipsum. In his duobus mandatis universa lex pendet, et prophetae. (Matthew 22:37–40) (“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind’. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself’. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets”.)1 In reading the Commedia through this hermeneutical approach, this thesis proposes that Dante’s Christology can be located in the hermeneutical practices he imitates rather than in a discussion about Christ-centred passages in the Commedia itself. In the methodology chapter of this thesis, I discuss the details of Augustine’s Christological hermeneutics and its system of interpreting and acting upon good and bad forms of love. In general terms, properly ordered love is caritas, which is the ideal form of love because it loves God for God’s own sake, and integrates the love of creatures into the love of God. Cabrini, a schoolteacher from Lombardy, founded the Institute of Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (MSC) in Codogno, Italy in 1880. When she died, a United States citizen in Chicago, USA, she had established 70 houses in Europe and the Americas. One thousand women had joined the MSC. Her priority was to work with some of the estimated thirteen million Italians who emigrated between 1880 and 1915. The literature review considers the relatively little work in the history of education on Catholic educational practice. The research addresses three questions: 1. How did Mother Cabrini understand Catholic educational practice? 2. How can Mother Cabrini’s understanding of Catholic educational practice be seen in the work of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? 3. How far did Mother Cabrini develop a coherent approach to Catholic educational practice? A multiple case study approach is used, focussing on the educational practice of Cabrini and the MSC in Rome, London and New Orleans, within the transnational context of their Institute.

Without denying the validity of such critiques, the present article focuses its attention first on the question of Dasein’s neutrality and asexuality. Then it analyzes Heidegger’s remarks on temporality as the horizon of all meaning, paying special attention to its significance for Butler’s notion of performativity. Keywords: body, Dasein, gesture, performativity, temporality In Being and Time we find only one reference to corporeality in the context of Heidegger’s analysis of spatiality. Therefore, his analysis of human existence is often accused of forgetting about the body. This criticism has particular force in the field of French phenomenology. Alphonse de Waehlens, for instance, lamented the absence of the fundamental role that the body and perception play in our everyday understanding of things. Jean-Paul Sartre expanded upon this line of criticism by emphasizing the importance of the body as the first point of contact that human beings establish with their world. However, in the context of the first generation of French phenomenologists, Maurice Merleau-Ponty was undoubtedly the first whose systematic analysis of bodily perception established the basis for a revision of Heidegger’s understanding of human life (Askay, 1999: 29-35).

Housman (1859–1936) Born in Worcestershire in 1859, Alfred Edward Housman was a gifted classical scholar and poet. After studying in Oxford, Housman worked for ten years as a clerk, while publishing and writing scholarly articles on Horace, Propertius, Ovid, Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles. He gradually acquired such a high reputation that in 1892 he returned to the academic world as Professor of Classics at University College London (1892–1911) and then as Kennedy Professor of Latin at Trinity College, Cambridge (1911–1936). Housman Lectures at UCL The Department of Greek and Latin at University College London organizes regular Housman Lectures, named after its illustrious former colleague (with support from UCL Alumni). Housman Lectures, delivered by a scholar of international distinction, originally took place every second year and now happen every year, alternating between Greek and Roman topics (Greek lectures being funded by the A.G.     Issue 70: Dante's Guide to Heaven and Hell Dante and the Divine Comedy: Did You Know? What a famous painting suggests about Dante's life, legend, and legacy. Big Man in the Cosmos A giant in the world of which he wrote, laurel-crowned Dante stands holding his Divine Comedy open to the first lines: "Midway this way of life we're bound upon, / I woke to find myself in a dark wood, / Where the right road was wholly lost and gone." Of course, his copy reads in Italian. Dante was the first major writer in Christendom to pen lofty literature in everyday language rather than in formal Latin. Coming 'Round the Mountain Behind Dante sits multi-tiered Mount Purgatory. An angel guards the gate, which stands atop three steps: white marble for confession, cracked black stone for contrition, and red porphyry for Christ's blood sacrifice. With his sword, the angel marks each penitent's forehead with seven p's (from Latin peccatum, "sin") for the Seven Deadly Sins. When these wounds are washed away by penance, the soul may enter earthly paradise at the mountain's summit. Starry Heights In Paradiso, the third section of the Comedy, Dante visits the planets and constellations where blessed souls dwell. The celestial spheres look vague in this painting, but Dante had great interest in astronomy. One of his astronomical references still puzzles scholars. He notes "four stars, the same / The first men saw, and since, no living eye" (Purgatorio, I.23-24), apparently in reference to the Southern Cross. But that constellation was last visible at Dante's latitude (thanks to the earth's wobbly axis) in 3000 B.C., and no one else wrote about it in Europe until after Amerigo Vespucci's voyage in 1501.

    DOMINICAN A Vol. XVII D ECEMBER, 1932 No. 4 DANTE ON THE INCARNATION ANTON/NUS BAVERSO, O.P. HE Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas presents clearly and distinctly a complete summation of Catholic doctrine. To Dante is due its transmutation into immortal verse, however without loss of doctrinal content. "Were all the libraries in the world destroyed and the Sacred Scriptures with them, the whole system of doctrine and morals might be almost reconstructed out of the Divina C mmnedia" .1 Dante has been called the "Poetic Thomas Aquinas." It is a source of wonder how St. Thomas covered so vast a field of learning in so short a span of life; it is equally wonderful how Dante converted his doctrine into golden poetry. The Summa and the Commedia almost go hand in hand. The subject matter in numerous places is the same. In one we have a subject treated with the clear, precise, philosophical exactness of the Angelic Doctor, in the other the same subject caught up in poetic fancy and presented in an imaginative form that loses nothing of its depth by being converted into high poetry. The chief dogmas of the Catholic Faith are to be found in Dante. Their expression often is so similar to the treatment given them by Aquinas that one may well imagine that there was but one author for both expositions. The Incarnation, for instance, is a splendid examp~e of how Dante would take a doctrine from Thomas and present it" in resplendent poetic form. There is a logical order in the poet's elucidation of the doc­ trine, although the doctrine itself has to be culled in fragments from diverse parts of the Commedia.
