Free Tax Preparation Assistance [State Senator Liz Krueger has shared this with us.] IRS- trained volunteers are available to provide free tax preparation assistance throughout City. I encourage you to take advantage of these services, which can save you money and ensure you avoid getting caught in “Refund Anticipation Loan” scams that many for-profit tax preparers engage in. AARP is sponsoring a number of locations on the East Side, and there are no age or income restrictions to receive this assistance. February 25 12-1:30pm Historian Tom Miller talks about "Murray Hill Eccentrics and Other Unusual Stories" Fascinating Murray Hill residents and the houses they lived in will be the subject of the talk, including Martha Bacon who lived at 1 Park Avenue (the house is now demolished), actress Helen Dauvray (photo) who married baseball player John Montgomery Ward, Horace Walpole Carpentier who sent the first transcontinental telegraph message, and the residents of 109 East 39th Street, where the event is being hosted. About the speaker: Tom is the author of Seeking New York, which includes a section on Murray Hill. He writes a blog dedicated to New York City architectural history, A Daytonian in Manhattan, (daytoninmanhattan.blogspot.com). After the talk, there will be time for questions and to meet with your Murray Hill neighbors at a coffee reception. February 28 6:30pm Film Historian Max Alvarez will take you on a suspenseful history trip through Hollywood's darkest hour, the McCarthy era The talk will feature rare film clips, newsreels and archival materials. “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” Washington, D.C. congressmen asked that intense question to film actors, directors and writers throughout the Cold War era of the late 1940s and 1950s. As a result, hundreds of film, TV, and radio professionals lost their jobs in a climate of blacklists, witch- hunts, and political persecution. About the speaker: Max Alvarez is an author, film historian and speaker on world cinema culture. A former visiting scholar for The Smithsonian Institution and museum film curator, Max currently teaches film history for John Jay College's continuing education program, Sundays at JASA, in Manhattan. He is author of 'The Crime Films of Anthony Mann' (University Press of Mississippi) and a major contributor to 'Thornton Wilder/New Perspectives' (Northwestern University Press). During Irving Berlin’s career, he published an estimated 1,500 songs. Marty will discuss how the immigrant from Russia became the classic ragtime to riches story. Irving Berlin's first published song earned him 37 cents.
