Individual participants are expected to engage in activities suitable to their ability, experience and physical condition. Leaders may refuse to take anyone who lacks ability or is not properly dressed or equipped. These precautions are for your safety, and the wellbeing of the group. Your participation is voluntary and at your own risk. Remember to bring lunch and water on all full day activities. Telephone the leader or Lenny if unsure what to wear or bring with you on an activity. Nonmembers pay one-day membership dues of $3. It is with sorrow that we say goodbye to Robert Kaye, the brother of Alan Kaye, who died in January. We have been able to keep the dues the same, and publish the Newsletter because of Robert’s benevolence to the Club. Robert wanted to make sure that the Club would continue after Alan’s death. Please join Bob Susser and Helen Yee on Saturday, October 18th, at the New York Botanical Gardens for a memorial walk in honor of Robert Kaye. Landmarks Preservation Commission November 22, 2016, Designation List 490 LP-2579 YALE CLUB OF NEW YORK CITY 50 Vanderbilt Avenue (aka 49-55 East 44th Street), Manhattan Built 1913-15; architect, James Gamble Rogers Landmark site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1279, Lot 28 On September 13, 2016, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the Yale Club of New York City and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site. The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Six people spoke in support of designation, including representatives of the Yale Club of New York City, Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, Historic Districts Council, New York Landmarks Conservancy, and the Municipal Art Society of New York. The Real Estate Board of New York submitted written testimony in opposition to designation. State Senator Brad Hoylman submitted written testimony in support of designation. Summary The Yale Club of New York City is a Renaissance Revival-style skyscraper at the northwest corner of Vanderbilt Avenue and East 44th Street. For more than a century it has played an important role in East Midtown, serving the Yale community and providing a handsome and complementary backdrop to Grand Central Terminal. Constructed on property that was once owned by the New York Central Railroad, it stands directly above two levels of train tracks and platforms. This was the ideal location to build the Yale Club, opposite the new terminal, which serves New Haven, where Yale University is located, and at the east end of “clubhouse row.” The architect was James Gamble Rogers, who graduated from Yale College in 1889 and attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris during the 1890s. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission July 9, 1985, Designation List 181 LP-1517 CENTURY APARTMENTS, 25 Central Park West, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1931; architect Irwin S. Chanin. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1115, Lot 29. On September 11, 1984, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Century Apartments and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 11). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Thirteen witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Century Apartments, extending along the entire blockfront of Central Park West between West 62nd Street to West 63rd Street, anchors the southern end of one of New York City's finest residential boulevards. With twin towers rising 300 feet from the street, this building is one of a small group of related structures that help give Central Park West its distinctive silhouette. Designed in 1930 by Irwin S. Chanin of the Chanin Construction Company, the Century Apartments is among the most sophisticated residential Art Deco buildings in New York and is a major work by one of America's pioneering Art Deco designers. Built in 1931, the Century was among the last buildings erected as part of the early 20th-century redevelopment of Central Park West. Central Park West, a continuation of Eighth Avenue, runs along the western edge of Central Park. Development along this prime avenue occurred very slowly , lagging sub stantially behind the general development of the Upper West Side. -

This spring, we’ve organized a restoration cleanup and marsh planting at Plum Beach, a section of Gateway National Recreation Area and a major spawning beach for the ancient horseshoe crab. In May and June during the high tides, the crabs come ashore to lay their eggs as they’ve done for millions of years. This provides a critical food source for the many species of shorebirds that are migrating through New York City. Small fi sh such as mummichogs and killifi sh join in the feast as well. JAMAICA BAY RESTORATION PROJECTS: Since 1986, the Littoral Society has been organizing annual PROTECTING OUR MARINE LIFE shoreline cleanups to document debris and create a greater public awareness of the issue. HVS International : 2005 Manhattan Hotel Market Overview Page 1 of 22 Manhattan Hotel Market Overview HVS International, in cooperation with New York University’s Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management, is pleased to present the eighth annual Manhattan Hotel Market Overview. In 2004, the Manhattan lodging market experienced an impressive recovery, with a RevPAR increase of 22% compared to 2003. From March through December of 2004, the market recorded double-digit growth in RevPAR each month, ranging from a high of 41% in April to a low of roundly 17% in October. At 83.2%, overall occupancy reached close to the historical peak achieved in 2000 (at 83.7%) while marketwide average rate was less than 10% below the 2000 level. Occupancy and average rate in 2005 should surpass 2000 levels. Due to limited new supply and increased compression resulting from near-maximum-capacity occupancy levels, overall RevPAR will experience double-digit growth for the next few years. Based on an overall improved economic climate, strong barriers to entry, limited new supply, and increased compression, we forecast the Manhattan lodging market to achieve a robust ±17% RevPAR growth in 2005.
