Field Notes - Spring 2016 Issue RETROSPECTIVE BOOK REVIEWS By Esley Hamilton, NAOP Board Trustee We have been reviewing new books about the Olmsteds and the art of landscape architecture for so long that the book section of our website is beginning to resemble a bibliography. To make this resource more useful for researchers and interested readers, we’re beginning a series of articles about older publications that remain useful and enjoyable. We hope to focus on the landmarks of the Olmsted literature that appeared before the creation of our website as well as shorter writings that were not intended to be scholarly works or best sellers but that add to our understanding of Olmsted projects and themes. THE OLMSTEDS AND THE VANDERBILTS The Vanderbilts and the Gilded Age: Architectural Aspirations 1879-1901. by John Foreman and Robbe Pierce Stimson, Introduction by Louis Auchincloss. New York: St. Martin’s Press, 1991, 341 pages. At his death, William Henry Vanderbilt (1821-1885) was the richest man in America. In the last eight years of his life, he had more than doubled the fortune he had inherited from his father, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877), who had created an empire from shipping and then done the same thing with the New York Central Railroad. William Henry left the bulk of his estate to his two eldest sons, but each of his two other sons and four daughters received five million dollars in cash and another five million in trust. This money supported a Vanderbilt building boom that remains unrivaled, including palaces along Fifth Avenue in New York, aristocratic complexes in the surrounding countryside, and palatial “cottages” at the fashionable country resorts. -

SMOKE AND MIRRORS (The United Nations to Grand Central Station) ____________________________________________ At the edge of the world sits a Tower. And this Tower is no structure of brick and mortar, but a kind of illusion; a trick of the light, flickering electric blue in and out of sight; a coalescing of vapors; of misplaced goodwill. The kings and queens of the world attend here, pronouncing PEACE, while raining armaments on those of their own, or those of their own they believe to be not. But still the pilgrims come in the thousands from the Terminal seeking an audience, uninformed or disregarding of this Congregation’s inadequacy. Through miles of devastated landscape they come with their fragile appeals in their hands, towards the Tower shimmering like a mirage in the distance; and the mediaeval brick city-fortress that guards its flanks. Around them, light and shadow play upon pillars of glass and steel, reflected one upon the other so reality is indiscernible from reflection; so the pilgrim, his eyes confused and diverted, does not realise that there is in fact, nothing behind the smoke and mirrors; that this entire landscape of grandiose ideals is insubstantial. Ting 8 1 – The United Nations Secretariat Tower, completed in 1952 and designed by an international committee of architects, including Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, amongst others. Ting 9 2 – Isaiah 2:4, on the Scharansky steps, named after a Soviet dissident, and part of the Ralphe Bunche Park. Landmarks Preservation Commission November 22, 2016, Designation List 490 LP-2579 YALE CLUB OF NEW YORK CITY 50 Vanderbilt Avenue (aka 49-55 East 44th Street), Manhattan Built 1913-15; architect, James Gamble Rogers Landmark site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1279, Lot 28 On September 13, 2016, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the Yale Club of New York City and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site. The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Six people spoke in support of designation, including representatives of the Yale Club of New York City, Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, Historic Districts Council, New York Landmarks Conservancy, and the Municipal Art Society of New York. The Real Estate Board of New York submitted written testimony in opposition to designation. State Senator Brad Hoylman submitted written testimony in support of designation. Summary The Yale Club of New York City is a Renaissance Revival-style skyscraper at the northwest corner of Vanderbilt Avenue and East 44th Street. For more than a century it has played an important role in East Midtown, serving the Yale community and providing a handsome and complementary backdrop to Grand Central Terminal. Constructed on property that was once owned by the New York Central Railroad, it stands directly above two levels of train tracks and platforms. This was the ideal location to build the Yale Club, opposite the new terminal, which serves New Haven, where Yale University is located, and at the east end of “clubhouse row.” The architect was James Gamble Rogers, who graduated from Yale College in 1889 and attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris during the 1890s. -

The New York Times: Real Estate May 7, 2021 Old Buildings, New Views Recent renovations around town have uncovered views of Manhattan that had been hiding in plain sight. By Caroline Biggs Impressions: 43,264,806 While New York City’s skyline is ever changing, some recent construction and additions to historic buildings across the city have revealed some formerly hidden, but spectacular, views to the world. These views range from close-up looks at architectural details that previously might have been visible only to a select few, to bird’s-eye views of towers and cupolas that until The New York Times: Real Estate May 7, 2021 recently could only be viewed from the street. They provide a novel way to see parts of Manhattan and shine a spotlight on design elements that have largely been hiding in plain sight. The structures include office buildings that have created new residential spaces, like the Woolworth Building in Lower Manhattan; historic buildings that have had towers added or converted to create luxury housing, like Steinway Hall on West 57th Street and the Waldorf Astoria New York; and brand-new condo towers that allow interesting new vantages of nearby landmarks. “Through the first decades of the 20th century, architects generally had the belief that the entire building should be designed, from sidewalk to summit,” said Carol Willis, an architectural historian and founder and director of the Skyscraper Museum. “Elaborate ornament was an integral part of both architectural design and the practice of building industry.” In the examples that we share with you below, some of this lofty ornamentation is now available for view thanks to new residential developments that have recently come to market. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission July 9, 1985, Designation List 181 LP-1517 CENTURY APARTMENTS, 25 Central Park West, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1931; architect Irwin S. Chanin. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1115, Lot 29. On September 11, 1984, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Century Apartments and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 11). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Thirteen witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Century Apartments, extending along the entire blockfront of Central Park West between West 62nd Street to West 63rd Street, anchors the southern end of one of New York City's finest residential boulevards. With twin towers rising 300 feet from the street, this building is one of a small group of related structures that help give Central Park West its distinctive silhouette. Designed in 1930 by Irwin S. Chanin of the Chanin Construction Company, the Century Apartments is among the most sophisticated residential Art Deco buildings in New York and is a major work by one of America's pioneering Art Deco designers. Built in 1931, the Century was among the last buildings erected as part of the early 20th-century redevelopment of Central Park West. Central Park West, a continuation of Eighth Avenue, runs along the western edge of Central Park. Development along this prime avenue occurred very slowly , lagging sub stantially behind the general development of the Upper West Side. -

Handout 3 Morgan and Vanderbilt - Documents J.P. Morgan One of the most powerful bankers of his era, J. P. (John Pierpont) Morgan (1837-1913) financed railroads and helped organize U. S. Steel, General Electric, and other major corporations. The Connecticut native followed his wealthy father into the banking business in the late 1850s, and in 1871 formed a partnership with Philadelphia banker Anthony Drexel. In 1895, their firm was reorganized as J.P. Morgan & Company, a predecessor of the modern-day financial giant JPMorgan Chase [& Co.]. Morgan used his influence to help stabilize American financial markets during several economic crises, including the panic of 1907. However, he faced criticism that he had too much power and was accused of manipulating the nation’s financial system for his own gain. The Gilded Age titan spent a significant portion of his wealth amassing a vast art collection. J.P. Morgan: Early Years and Family John Pierpont Morgan was born into a distinguished New England family on April 17, 1837, in Hartford, Connecticut. One of his maternal relatives, James Pierpont (1659-1714), was a founder of Yale University; his paternal grandfather was a founder of the Aetna Insurance Company; and his father, Junius Spencer Morgan (1813-90), ran a successful Hartford dry-goods company before becoming a partner in a London-based merchant banking firm. After graduating from high school in Boston in 1854, Pierpont, as he was known, studied in Europe, where he learned French and German, then returned to New York in 1857 to begin his finance career In 1861, Morgan married Amelia Sturges, the daughter of a wealthy New York businessman. -

Federal Railroad Administration Record of Decision For the East Side Access Project September 2012 SUMMARY OF DECISION This is a Record of Decision (ROD) of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), an operating administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation, regarding the East Side Access (ESA) Project. FRA has prepared this ROD in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Council on Environmental Quality’s (CEQ) regulations implementing NEPA, and FRA’s Procedures for Considering Environmental Impacts. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) filed an application with the FRA for a loan to finance eligible elements of the ESA Project through the Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing (RRIF) Program. The ESA Project is the MTA’s largest system expansion in over 100 years. The ESA Project will expand the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) services by connecting Queens and Long Island with East Midtown Manhattan. With direct LIRR service to Midtown East, the LIRR will further increase its market share of commuters by saving up to 40 minutes per day in subway/bus/sidewalk travel time for commuters who work on Manhattan’s East Side. The ESA Project was previously considered in an environmental impact statement (EIS) prepared by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in May 2001 and subsequent FTA reevaluations and an environmental assessment of changes in the ESA Project. Construction of the ESA Project has been ongoing since 2001. FRA has reviewed the environmental impacts for the ESA Project identified in the FTA March 2001 Final EIS, subsequent FTA Reevaluations, and the 2006 Supplemental EA/FONSI (collectively, the “2001 EIS”) for the ESA Project and adopted it pursuant to CEQ regulations (40 CFR 1506.3). -
