New York will always be known as the land of many towers. From early iconic Art Deco splendours such as the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, to the newest symbol of resilience found in the One World Trade Center, there is no other city that can top the Big Apple’s supreme skyline. Except itself. Tall projects have been proposed and built in sizeable numbers over recent years. The unprecedented boom has been mostly marked by a rise in tall luxury residential constructions, where prior to the completion of One57 in 2014, there were less than a handful of super-tall skyscrapers in New York. Now, there are four being developed along the same street as One57 alone. Billionaire.com picks the city’s most outstanding multi-family high rises on the concrete horizon. 111 Murray Street This luxury residential tower developed by Fisher Brothers and Witkoff will soon soar some 800ft above Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood. Renderings of the condominium showcase a curved rectangular silhouette that looks almost round, slightly unfolding at the highest floors like a flared glass. The modern design is from Kohn Pedersen Fox. An A-team of visionaries has also been roped in for the project, including David Mann for it residence interiors; David Rockwell for amenities and public spaces and Edmund Hollander for landscape architecture.

    Federal Railroad Administration Record of Decision For the East Side Access Project September 2012 SUMMARY OF DECISION This is a Record of Decision (ROD) of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), an operating administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation, regarding the East Side Access (ESA) Project. FRA has prepared this ROD in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Council on Environmental Quality’s (CEQ) regulations implementing NEPA, and FRA’s Procedures for Considering Environmental Impacts. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) filed an application with the FRA for a loan to finance eligible elements of the ESA Project through the Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing (RRIF) Program. The ESA Project is the MTA’s largest system expansion in over 100 years. The ESA Project will expand the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) services by connecting Queens and Long Island with East Midtown Manhattan. With direct LIRR service to Midtown East, the LIRR will further increase its market share of commuters by saving up to 40 minutes per day in subway/bus/sidewalk travel time for commuters who work on Manhattan’s East Side. The ESA Project was previously considered in an environmental impact statement (EIS) prepared by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in May 2001 and subsequent FTA reevaluations and an environmental assessment of changes in the ESA Project. Construction of the ESA Project has been ongoing since 2001. FRA has reviewed the environmental impacts for the ESA Project identified in the FTA March 2001 Final EIS, subsequent FTA Reevaluations, and the 2006 Supplemental EA/FONSI (collectively, the “2001 EIS”) for the ESA Project and adopted it pursuant to CEQ regulations (40 CFR 1506.3).

    Complexity in building design Mahadev Rahman, Princeton University and Columbia University; Board of Directors, Arup Group, USA At the present moment, the complexity of building design seems best exemplified by the super structures towering over modern Dubai. But how did we get from the iconic stone buildings of ancient times to these glass and steel monoliths that stand up to 160 floors high? As the tools available to designers have become ever more sophisticated and the environmental performance standards ever more stringent, there seems to be an inevitable drive toward complexity in the design of buildings. Technological advances have also added additional stages to the construction process and in an industry where time is money; this can produce innumerable challenges for a design team. Yet as we’ll see, the new tools are actually optimizing the efficiency of the design process. 1 Historical Context Of course, historically, the construction of traditional, or vernacular, buildings was not simple either. But typically much of the risk associated with the process could be mitigated by the repetitive nature of these buildings, and the incremental way in which innovations in technology or process were incorporated. At a larger scale, the construction of the pyramids at Giza, the Parthenon, the Coliseum, the Sun Temple at Konark, the cathedral at Chartres, the Taj Mahal would all have been spectacularly complex processes, even by modern standards. However, even with these examples, each building represented the ultimate refinement of an architectural style, technology, and construction process perfected over many generations. Risk was managed by ensuring that the next building would essentially be the same as the last one with only minor innovations in technology and construction methodology (Figure 1).

    Federal TIFIA loan helps fund $2 billion rail station P3 in NYC By Jim Watts Published July 06 2017, 1∶37pm EDT More in Infrastructure, Public-private partnership, TIFIA, Washington DC, New York DALLAS -- A $537.5 million low-interest federal loan will provide most of the state’s contribution to the $1.85 billion redevelopment of an old post office in Manhattan into a modern train station being financed as a public-private partnership. Private partners will invest $630 million in the Moynihan Train Hall project in Manhattan in return for a 99- year concession to operate the facility’s massive commercial concourse. Empire State Development Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said that the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan to the state’s Empire State Development for the Moynihan Train Hall would provide critical financing to the P3 project. “This TIFIA loan will help transform the James A. Farley Post Office Building in Manhattan to include a modern, state-of-the-art train station, delivering extensive improvements for passengers in easing congestion and delays,” she said Wednesday. “This is an important investment in the Northeast Corridor’s rail service and the economic vitality of the region.” The new facility is intended to relieve congestion at New York’s Penn Station, which is the busiest passenger transportation facility in the U.S. with 650,000 passengers per weekday.
