Beedle, during his time as director of the Council and a professor of Lehigh University. The collection contains primarily business records, publications, subject files, correspondence, and audio-visual materials generated by the organization during the period of time it was headquartered at Lehigh University, as well as some of Beedle's personal and academic files. - Page 3 - Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Records Cite as: [Identification of item], Council and Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Records, SC MS 0263, Special Collections, Linderman Library, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA Biography/History The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat was founded by Lynn S. Beedle at Lehigh University in 1969. The organization began as a cooperative group between the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers (IABSE) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and was known as the Joint Committee on Tall Buildings until 1976. Beedle served as the Council’s director from 1969 until retirement in 2000, and as Chairman from 1969-1976. In 2003, the Council relocated its headquarters, moving from Lehigh University to the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. The Council is well known for its decision in height criteria that resulted in the Petronas Towers succeeding the Sears Tower as the world’s tallest building. Scope and Contents The Records of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is organized into eight series, determined by format and based on the original order of Lynn S. Beedle. The collection contains too many personal names that are all mentioned in the container list. These names were not repeated in the "Personal Name Subject" section. Arrangement of the Collection Materials in the collection are arranged in various ways and are indicated in the series as to their arrangement. Some correspondence files were arranged chronologically while others in reverse chronological order, depending on the filing system of the time. Other series are arranged by report - Page 4 - Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Records or research file number. Due to Beedle’s complex filing system, much of the collection was left in its original order to preserve intellectual integrity. Michigan Ave. (1928; Holabird & Roche/Holabird & Root) The 333 NORTH MICHIGAN BUILDING is one of the city's most outstanding Art Deco-style skyscrapers. It is one of four buildings surrounding the Michigan A venue Bridge that defines one of the city' s-and nation' s-finest urban spaces. The building's base is sheathed in polished granite, in shades of black and purple. Its upper stories, which are set back in dramatic fashion to correspond to the city's 1923 zoning ordinance, are clad in buff-colored limestone and dark terra cotta. The building's prominence is heightened by its unique site. Due to the jog of Michigan Avenue at the bridge, the building is visible the length of North Michigan Avenue, appearing to be located in the center of the street.     1 Airport OLS Penetrations by Existing and Planned Structures in the Sydney and Brisbane CBD It is crucial that the safety implications arising from the recent incidents involving a Qantas airbus A380 following take-off at Singapore airport on the 4th of November, 2010 and a B747 departing the same airport two days later are fully appreciated by governments at all levels. Although the problems were serious enough, they could have been a lot worse and could well have occurred at Brisbane or Sydney airports. To further illustrate what happened to the A380, the following interim list of 18 items damaged by the exploding engine was released to the media on the 11/11/2010. 1.Massive fuel leak in the left mid fuel tank (there are 11 tanks, including in the horizontal stabiliser on the tail); 2.Massive fuel leak in the left inner fuel tank; 3. A hole on the flap fairing big enough to climb through; 4 The aft gallery in the fuel system failed, preventing many fuel transfer functions; 5 Problem jettisoning fuel; 6 Massive hole in the upper wingsurface; 7 Partial failure of leading edge slats; 8 Partial failure of speed brakes/groundspoilers; 9 Shrapnel damage to the flaps; 10 Total loss of all hydraulic fluid in one of the jet'stwo systems; 11 Manual extension of landing gear; 12 Loss of one generator and associatedsystems; 13 Loss of brake anti-skid system; 14 No.1 engine could not be shut down in theusual way after landing because of major damage to systems; 15 No.1 engine could not beshut down using the fire switch, which meant fire extinguishers would not work on thatengine; 16 ECAM (electronic centralised aircraft monitor) warnings about the major fuelimbalance (because of fuel leaks on left side) could not be fixed with cross-feeding; 17 Fuelwas trapped in the trim tank (in the tail) creating a balance problem for landing; 18 Left wingforward spar penetrated by debris With so much damage to the aircraft, it’s clear that all on board were extremely lucky.
