Beedle, during his time as director of the Council and a professor of Lehigh University. Beedle at Lehigh University in 1969. The organization began as a cooperative group between the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers (IABSE) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and was known as the Joint Committee on Tall Buildings until 1976. Beedle served as the Council’s director from 1969 until retirement in 2000, and as Chairman from 1969-1976. In 2003, the Council relocated its headquarters, moving from Lehigh University to the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. The Council is well known for its decision in height criteria that resulted in the Petronas Towers succeeding the Sears Tower as the world’s tallest building. Scope and Contents The Records of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is organized into eight series, determined by format and based on the original order of Lynn S. Beedle. The collection contains too many personal names that are all mentioned in the container list. These names were not repeated in the "Personal Name Subject" section. Arrangement of the Collection Materials in the collection are arranged in various ways and are indicated in the series as to their arrangement. Some correspondence files were arranged chronologically while others in reverse chronological order, depending on the filing system of the time. Other series are arranged by report - Page 4 - Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Records or research file number. Due to Beedle’s complex filing system, much of the collection was left in its original order to preserve intellectual integrity.
