HEIWA TERRACE NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2019

 Office is closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 2.

 Long awaited Heiwa Terrace annual Arts & Craft Show will be in October. We welcome any creative work from the residents and we will proudly display them in the dining room to celebrate our talents. Please gather your art work and bring them to Maiko or Jessica by September 30. Due to the limited space, we may only display 3 items from each participant.

 Because our Bingo program is so popular, we’d like to try having this program in the afternoon at 3pm on the first week and second week of the month. Please check your calendar for specific date and time.

 Are you learning English as a second language and need the confidence to speak easily? Then Harvard Hwa can help with the conversational English class. Class will be held every Thursday from 1pm to 3pm in the activity room.

 Need to get a shopping done? Partnering with HOME agency, this month shopping trip is to Jewel on September 13 at 1:30pm. Cost is $4.00. Please sign up by Maiko’s office.

 We’re going to Mitsuwa! Get your shopping list ready for your favorite groceries and enjoy good food at the food court. The trip will be on Thursday, September 19 at 9:30am. The cost for the trip is $10. Please sign up by Maiko’s office.

 Ms. Ester Hana (left photo) will return to Heiwa for another wonderful concert on Tuesday, September 17 at 2:30pm in the activity room. Please come and enjoy her joyful music!

 Learn the art of Ikebana with teacher Ms. Yuko Inoue-Darcy. The September class will be on Wednesday, September 18 at 1pm in the 12th floor party room. Please do not forget to sign up for the class and pay for a fee ($15 including flower) at Maiko's office by Monday, September 16.

 Healthy Living series will continue this month. Graduate students from School of Psychology will return to present how to live healthy physically and mentally with a fun activity. We encourage many residents to join on Thursday, September 26 at 2pm in the dining room. Light refreshment is served.

 Celebrate birthday and enjoy socializing with friends and neighbors with Birthday & Bingo Bash provided by Missio Dei Chicago Church. This event will be Saturday, September 28 at 2pm in the dining room. Everyone is invited and we especially encourage all those with September birthday to attend!!

Our special thanks to… The generous donations are placed in a fund that is used for programs and activities that are planned for the benefit and enjoyment of all the residents at Heiwa Terrace, as well as allowing us to serve free coffee and tea in the dining room every day.

In addition, in-kind donations of your valuable time and/or supplies are used for essential maintenance of good physical, mental, and spiritual health of Heiwa Terrace residents. Following donations include monetary gift, supplies and products.

For your information Fire Safety (From Fire Safety workshop on August 21, 2019)  If there is a fire in your apartment: Call 911 o Leave immediately and CLOSE THE DOOR behind you so the fire does not spread.  If there is a fire on your floor: Call 911 o Feel the door before opening with the back of your hand. If the door feels hot, do not open the door. o If the door feels cool, leave immediately using the stairs. If you are unable to use the stairs, stay in your apartment with the door closed.  If there is a fire in your building but not near you: Call 911 o Stay in your apartment with the door closed and wait for instruction.

 Safety tips while cooking o Turn skillet and hot handles away from you to prevent accidental overturning. o Do not leave towels or napkins near the stove. o Use a timer when leaving a pot or skillet on the stove. o In case of fire in the pan, do not use water. Do not try to move the pan with grease fire. If the grease fire is small, use baking soda or close the lid to put out fire. o Keep a fire extinguisher close.

 Emergency Information o In case of emergency, keep information about your health, medications, emergency contact visible for the emergency personnel to retrieve (on refrigerator). o Blank emergency information card is available outside Maiko’s office.
