Dear Theatregoer,

Welcome to the Walnut! We owe our great success to the continued support of loyal theatregoers like you. Thank you for making the Walnut not only the most popular theatre in , but also the most subscribed theatre in the world!

I’m thrilled that you’ve joined us for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. This show is not only the recipient of the Tony Award for Best Musical, but is one of the funniest shows ever written. Tonight we’ll head to ancient Rome where there’s “something for everyone, a (musical) comedy tonight!” When my wife and I first saw this show, the fast-paced comedic timing, paired with a beautifully melodic score by the award-winning , instantly made it one of our favorites. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

I invite you and your family to celebrate the holiday season with us as we look to a brighter “Tomorrow” in , the Tony Award-winning Best Musical! Next, we’ll have a play that won over twenty 2016 Best Play Awards, The Humans. This play about a Pennsylvania family Photo: Mark Garvin sharing Thanksgiving dinner in the tense confines of an old apartment makes for a memorable evening of comic chaos and hopefulness. Then, it’s complete pandemonium with the hilarious Noises Off. We’ll end our season with the ultimate feel-good musical filled with the music of ABBA in Mamma Mia!

I’m delighted to share with you that due to incredible demand we have expanded our Independence Studio on 3 season. We’ve added a full week of performances to each one of our popular shows to give more of Philadelphia’s audiences the opportunity to experience our intimate productions, up-close-and-personal. This season begins with a tuneful comedy, Souvenir, A Fantasia on the Life of Florence Foster Jenkins. The recent film starring Meryl Streep was based on this play. We’ll welcome back Rebecca Robbins, a classically trained opera singer who you’ll recognize from and Music Man, to play the title role. Jenkins was a wealthy New York socialite in the 1940s with a great ambition to sing. The truth was, she couldn’t hold a tune. Perhaps there’s more than one way to get to Carnegie Hall! Based on a true story, I hope you’ll join us for this unforgettable evening of entertainment.

As part of our WST for Kids series, adults can read books with their children and then see the stories come to life on our stage. This year we’re excited to share with you Honk! Jr., Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, StinkyKids: The Musical, The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley Jr. and Ivy + Bean: The Musical. I hope to see you there with your littlest friends.

For tonight, get ready to laugh with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum!

Sincerely,

Bernard Havard, President and Producing Artistic Director
