Geva's 43 Season Begins with Monty Python's Spamalot Media Contact: Dawn Kellogg Communications Manager (585) 420-2059 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GEVA’S 43RD SEASON BEGINS WITH MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT Broadway couple Hunter Foster and Jennifer Cody lead cast. Geva partners with WXXI and the Little Theatre for Monty Python Film Series. Rochester, N.Y., August 18, 2015 – Audiences are in for an outrageously hilarious time as Geva Theatre Center presents the Tony Award-winning hit musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot by Eric Idle and John Du Prez and directed by Melissa Rain Anderson in the Elaine P. Wilson Stage from September 9 through October 11. Lovingly ripped off from the classic comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, this outrageous musical parody tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Embarking on their quest to find the Holy Grail, the Knights’ shenanigans include flying cows, beautiful show girls, killer rabbits, and flatulent Frenchmen – all while performing heart-stopping and hilarious musical numbers. 2015 marks the 40th Anniversary of the release of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The film was a box office hit and was the highest grossing British film shown in the U.S. in 1975, surpassing films such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Tommy, The Man Who Would Be King and Return of the Pink Panther. In 2005, Spamalot, adapted from the film, premiered on Broadway following a Chicago preview run. Directed by Mike Nichols, Spamalot received 14 Tony Award nominations and won three, including the award for Best Musical. During its Broadway run, it was seen by over 2 million people and grossed over $175 million. Spamalot opened at the Palace Theatre in London’s West End in September 2006, where it ran until January 2009. Monty Python is adored the world over and subsequent productions of Spamalot were mounted in Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Sweden, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Poland, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Norway and Switzerland. As previously announced, Tony Award Nominee Hunter Foster (Broadway’s King David, Les Misérables, Footloose, The Producers, Million Dollar Quartet, Hands on a Hardbody, Little Shop of Horrors and The Bridges of Madison County) will play the role of King Arthur, and his wife, Rochester-born Jennifer Cody (Broadway’s A Christmas Story; Shrek; The Pajama Game; Taboo; Urinetown the Musical; Seussical the Musical; Grease; Beauty and the Beast and Cats and Geva productions of The Odd Couple and Women in Jeopardy!), will play Arthur’s sidekick Patsy in this opening production of the theatre’s 43rd Season. Foster and Cody lead a cast of New York’s finest talent including Brandon Andrus (the recent Broadway revival of Side Show, national tours of Jersey Boys and Oklahoma!) as Sir Galahad; Mike DiSalvo (national tour of 12 Angry Men) as Lancelot, the Knight of Ni and Tim the Enchanter; Jacob Hoffman (Off-Broadway’s I’ll Be Damned) as the Historian, Not Dead Fred and Prince Herbert; Ashley Dawn Mortensen (Elphaba in the national tour of Wicked) as Lady of the Lake; Geva favourite Jim Poulos (Geva productions of A Christmas Carol, Clybourne Park, Urinetown, You Can’t Take it With You, Amadeus, Company and Broadway productions of Rent and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) as Sir Robin; and Michael Warrell (Broadway production of All That Glitters, national tours of Spamalot, Fame and Grease) as Sir Bedevere. The ensemble features Jessica Azenberg, John Cummings, Nicole Eras, Andy Frank, Leah Hassett, Shannon Mullen, Adam Pellegrine, Frankie Paparone and Jacob Stewart. Monty Python’s Spamalot is directed by Melissa Rain Anderson (Geva’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) with musical direction by Nolan Bonvouloir and choreography by Lenny Daniel. The design team includes James Morgan (scenic design), Susan Branch Towne (costume design), Brian J. Lilienthal (lighting design) and Ian Hildreth (sound design). The 2015-2016 Wilson Stage Series is sponsored by ESL Federal Credit Union. Monty Python’s Spamalot is produced with support from Lead Co-Producer St. John Fisher College; Associate Producers Bank of America and Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP and Media Sponsors 13WHAM TV and 98PXY. For the third season in a row, Geva will partner with WXXI and the Little Theatre for a film series inspired by one of the season’s productions. “The Monty Python Film Series” begins on August 19 with a screening of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, followed by The Life of Brian (August 26), Meaning of Life (September 2) and “Not the Messiah” (September 9). www.theatreguide.com.au Supporting live theatre in Adelaide PO Box 10278 [email protected] ADELAIDE BC SA 5000 ABN : 93 297 960 525 THE PRODUCERS Matt Byrne Media Arts Theatre Until 4 August 2007 (Shedley Theatre 9-11 August) Review by John Wells I could smell hubris in the air. An Adelaide company doing “The Producers” – the Mel Brooks show that took Broadway by the scruff of its neck and was showered with Tonys? Could an Adelaide amateur company do this show? Attempting a production of this impeccable and brilliantly-credentialed show is remarkably ambitious. With two films and the wildly successful stage musical already seared into the public consciousness, it is impossible to create an original rendering. Add to this the limited budget of amateur theatre and the risks of presenting a spectacular dud are high. But this is no dud. “The Producers” is by no means perfect, but it is an enjoyable, tight and funny show. With disciplined performances, and comical and precise characterisations, Director Glenn Vallen must take the credit for the success of this production. “The Producers” is the story of the failed, bombastic Broadway producer Max Bialystock and his mousy accountant Leo Bloom. They plan to raise millions of dollars to produce a sure-fire flop, and then run off with the investors’ cash when the show closes. When they find “Springtime for Hitler”, a musical honouring the Fuhrer by a local Nazi, they think they’ve found their perfect turkey. “The Producers” depends primarily on Bialystock and Bloom. If they are ineffective, the show cannot succeed.

  • YMTC to Present the Rock Musical Rent, November 3–10 in El Cerrito
Youth Musical Theater Company FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Inquiries: Laura Soble/YMTC Phone 510-595-5514 Email: [email protected] Website: https://www.ymtcbayarea.org YMTC to Present the Rock Musical Rent, November 3–10 in El Cerrito Berkeley, California, September 27, 2019—Youth Musical Theater Company (YMTC) will launch its 15th season of acclaimed regional theater with the rock musical Rent. The show opens Sunday, November 3, at the Performing Arts Theater, 540 Ashbury Ave., El Cerrito. Its run consists of a 5:00 p.m. opening (11/3), two 2:00 p.m. matinees (11/9, 11/10), and three 7:30 p.m. performances (11/7, 11/8, 11/9). Rent is a rock opera loosely based on Puccini’s La Boheme, with music, lyrics, and book by Jonathan Larson. Set in Lower Manhattan’s East Village during the turmoil of the AIDS crisis, this moving story chronicles the lives of a group of struggling artists over a year’s time. Its major themes are community, friendship, and survival. In 1996, Rent received four Tony Awards, including Best Musical; six Drama Desk Awards; and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1997, it won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Its Broadway run lasted 12 years. Co-Director Jennifer Boesing comments, “Rent is a love story and a bold, brazen manifesto for young artists who are trying not just to stay alive, but to stay connected to each other, when the mainstream culture seems to be ignoring signs of destruction all around them. Although the show today is a period piece about a very specific historical moment—well before the earliest memories of our young performing artists—they relate to it deeply just the same.

  • The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: the Life Cycle of the Child Performer
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Humanities Faculty School of Music April 2016 \A person's a person, no matter how small." Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

  • Monty Python's SPAMALOT
Monty Python’s Spamalot CHARACTERS Please note that the ages listed just serve as a guide. All roles are available and casting is open, and newcomers are welcome and encouraged. Also, character doublings are only suggested here and may be changed based on audition results and production needs. KING ARTHUR (Baritone, Late 30s-60s) – The King of England, who sets out on a quest to form the Knights of the Round Table and find the Holy Grail. Great humor. Good singer. THE LADY OF THE LAKE (Alto with large range, 20s-40s) – A Diva. Strong, beautiful, possesses mystical powers. The leading lady of the show. Great singing voice is essential, as she must be able to sing effortlessly in many styles and vocal registers. Sings everything from opera to pop to scatting. Gets angry easily. SIR ROBIN (Tenor/Baritone, 30s-40s) – A Knight of the Round Table. Ironically called "Sir Robin the Brave," though he couldn't be more cowardly. Joins the Knights for the singing and dancing. Also plays GUARD 1 and BROTHER MAYNARD, a long-winded monk. A good mover. SIR LANCELOT (Tenor/Baritone, 30s-40s) – A Knight of the Round Table. He is fearless to a bloody fault but through a twist of fate discovers his "softer side." This actor MUST be great with character voices and accents, as he also plays THE FRENCH TAUNTER, an arrogant, condescending, over-the-top Frenchman; the KNIGHT OF NI, an absurd, cartoonish leader of a peculiar group of Knights; and TIM THE ENCHANTER, a ghostly being with a Scottish accent.
