The Shuniah News, November 2011, page 5 Don't Feed the Deer heightened this concern. Feeding deer may seem like a good are helping them. But in reality, This causes damage to their win‐ idea because it not only allows the artificial feeding of deer can tering areas as the concentrated The consequences of feeding people to get a close look at these cause a long list of negative im‐ deer eat everything in sight, in‐ deer: feeding deer causes them to beautiful animals, but it also gives pacts and new information about cluding natural vegetation and concentrate at very high densities. people the impression that they the risk of disease transmission has those tasty domestic shrubs and trees! Another problem associated with concentrated deer is that there is often a lot of aggression between the deer. They may fight over the food, and usually it is the bigger deer which are more aggres‐ sive towards the smaller deer.

Deer normally respond to winter by lowering then‐metabolic rate, which reduces their energy de‐ mands. Artificial foods tend to re‐ verse this decrease in metabolic rate, and thereby creating an in‐ crease in energy demands, which may offset the advantages of the feeding program. Another prob‐ lem occurs when the wrong kind of food is provided. Improper diets can cause digestive problems, which sometimes lead to death.

Landowners who have feeding sta‐ tions and live adjacent to busy roads or lakes and rivers often at‐ tract deer through busy traffic areas and over unsafe ice, resulting in increased deer/vehicle colli‐ sions and in death to deer that fall in and drown or die of hypother‐ mia. Every year, many deer die this way, and the estimates of damage to human health and property are high. Aside from the fact that close contact increases aggression and destroys wintering habitats, fed animals are at risk of contract‐ ing several types of diseases.

So when is it a good time to feed deer? In winters when the snow is very deep and deer are unable to get at their normal winter food, the Ministry may prescribe emer‐ gency feeding to prevent large numbers of deer from starving to death. Usually, this is in late win‐ ter, when a deer's energy reserves are at their lowest. Winter condi‐ tions are monitored very carefully by staff at MNR and they can pro‐ vide advice if feeding is warranted. In most winters, however, deer are better off coping with winter con‐ ditions in the way that nature in‐ tended.
