The Shuniah News, March 2017, page 7 Soil Mates are Going to Garden School by Peter Tracz, Chairperson At our well attended January 18th meeting, 3 of our members, Bob Zale, Carol Bruni and Diane Jordan-Tracz accepted to attend the highly regarded Garden Seminar put on by the Roots to Harvest Group. The Seminar is being run by Brendan and Marcelle of the Sleepy G Farms of Pass Lake. This is a course based primarily on mixed ecological vegetable farming and should serve us well in our Shuniah Community Gardens. The course is across 4 days of 2 hours on March 22, 29 and April 5, & 12. I have every expectation that copious notes will be taken and shared by all three. This same meeting introduced all to our new Garden Application Form and New Community Gar- den Rules (modeled after the City of Thunder Bay). Check out the "Living in Shuniah" website for these items as well as the overall Garden plan and sites available (there are two open). The 1000 tulips we have planted need to be taken care of after their bloom in late April or early May this year. It is recommended by the donor, Vesey Seeds (PEI), that these bulbs need 6 weeks in-situ to regenerate for the next year's planting. They now oc- cupy 5 members garden boxes and in order to put these gardens back to their use, when the time comes to sal- vage these bulbs, that we are offering them back to the Community free issue. So, if you have a mind for some free tulip bulbs for the Fall planting, give a Shuniah Soil Mate a call and come and get them...but not till mid June. Happy Spring to all.
