SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes)
1. Discuss the history of rock music. 2. Identify, through critical listening, the key elements of rock music. 3. Distinguish and analyze various eras, forms, styles, genres, and artists/performers of rock music. 4. Understand the implications of U.S. and world sociological, political, technological, and economic changes as they affected rock music. 5. Write an in-depth analytic paper on a film or documentary of a historically important rock artist, band or album recording.

1a. Trace the historical development and cultural contexts of rock music from the 1940s to the present.
1b. Describe the cultural contexts of rock music. 1c. Discuss the musical innovations of major rock artist/bands.
2a. Recognize representative works by major artist, 1940-present. 2b. Identify through aural examination different rock music genres for each period (e.g., blues, rockabilly, R&B, soul, acid rock, heavy metal, punk). 2c. Identify and discuss the major and/or innovative personalities in the history of rock music and R&B.
3a. Recognize through listening guides and guided lecture various forms including 12-bar blues, AABA song form, refrain-framed and verse-chorus forms. 3b. Recognize the properties of these styles of music as they relate to African and Western European music. 3c. Identify and discuss the musical characteristics of different rock musical styles.
4a. Describe the cultural contexts for and the historical development of rock music from the late-1940s through the 2000s. 4b. Discuss, compare and contrast how rock/pop music affected society and how society affected the music.
5. Watch a documentary or biopic and cite detailed information gained from the work.
