  • Gender on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart, 1996-2016
Watson. Manuscript. Gender on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart, 1996-2016 Jada Watson (University of Ottawa) [email protected] In May 2015 radio consultant Keith Hill revealed that country radio programmers have strict rules on how many female artists can be included in airplay rotation. Referring to females as the “tomatoes” of the country salad, Hill’s remarks have sparked debate about gender-representation in country music. This paper examines gender-related trends on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart between 1996 and 2016, aiming to investigate how female artists have performed on the charts over this two-decade period. Analyzing long-term trends in frequency distribution, this study uses statistical results to unpack assertions made about women’s marginal status in country music. Keywords: country music; gender; Billboard charts; radio Introduction: #TomatoGate In a 26 May 2015 interview with Russ Penuell of Country AirCheck on the subject of country radio scheduling and ratings, consultant Keith Hill spoke candidly about how female artists factor into the format’s airplay rotation: If you want to make ratings in Country radio, take females out. The reason is mainstream Country radio generates more quarter hours from female listeners at a rate of 70 to 75%, and women like male artists. I’m basing that not only on music tests from over the years, but more than 300 client radio stations. The expectation is we’re principally a male format with a smaller female component. I’ve got about 40 music databases in front of me and the percentage of females in the one with the most is 19%.

  • An Original Rock Musical from Lord Graham Russell of the Renowned Rock Group Air Supply
AN ORIGINAL ROCK MUSICAL FROM LORD GRAHAM RUSSELL OF THE RENOWNED ROCK GROUP AIR SUPPLY awallapart.com STORY SYNOPSIS Brothers Kurt, Mickey and Hans were born and raised in war time Berlin, their parents perishing in the bombings of Berlin at the very end of the war. As the eldest, Hans took on the responsibility of raising his two younger siblings. Following the war he joined the East German border police and eventually became committed to the Communist cause. He is in a sense “too old” to be part of - and appreciate - the political movement of the 60’s throughout the world and in Berlin. He views his job and the support he received from the Communist party as the reason he and his siblings survived. Mickey and his new wife Susanne, on the other hand, don’t see it that way at all. As the story be- gins, Kurt is much more closely aligned with his brother Hans. He accepts that the Communist party is the path for him. Falling in love with Esther changes everything. Their love story covers 28 years. These three brothers are bound by blood and history but from the very start of the play are sharply divided by politics. Kurt’s is an epic journey from blind certainty of the true life path to questioning himself, his identity, and his choices but never his undying love for Esther. • When Are Soft Rocks Tough, and Hard Rocks Weak? a Discussion About the Toughness/Resistance of Rocks in Different Places
Earthlearningidea – https://www.earthlearningidea.com When are soft rocks tough, and hard rocks weak? A discussion about the toughness/resistance of rocks in different places Normally, the toughest and most resistant rocks (often called harder rocks) would be found at the tops of mountains, hills and plateaus (because they are most resistant to weathering and erosion) and the weaker, less resistant rocks (often called softer rocks) are at lower levels – but this doesn’t always happen. Why should this be? Sorting out the words Geoscientists often say ‘hard’ for tough rocks and ‘soft’ for weaker rocks – but most people use the word ‘soft’ differently. An internet search shows that to most people, ‘soft’ to the touch means: spongy, fluffy, delicate, smooth or flexible, but to a geoscientist it simply means a rock weaker than most rocks. Geological ‘soft rocks’ include clay, shale, chalk, etc. Meanwhile ‘hard rocks’ to a geoscientist are most igneous and metamorphic rocks and well-cemented sedimentary rocks. Another possible confusion is that some geoscientists use the term ‘hard rocks’ to mean all Railway tunnel into a chalk cliff, Le Treport, Normandy, igneous and metamorphic rocks (even though France. some of these are less ‘hard’) and the term ‘soft Image licensed by Philippe Alès under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license. rocks’ for all sedimentary rocks (even though some are pretty tough). Hard rock low land Although igneous rocks are usually very tough But even when you use the terms in the same and resistant, and so make higher land, the way as geoscientists do, we still find that some minerals that make up darker-coloured igneous ‘soft rocks’ make hills and some ‘hard rocks’ form rocks can be less resistant to weathering and valleys.

minerals Article Research on Supporting Method for High Stressed Soft Rock Roadway in Gentle Dipping Strata of Red Shale Chunde Ma 1,2, Jiaqing Xu 1,* , Guanshuang Tan 1, Weibin Xie 1 and Zhihai Lv 1 1 School of Resources and Safety Engineering, Central South University, Changsha 410083, China; [email protected] (C.M.); [email protected] (G.T.); [email protected] (W.X.); [email protected] (Z.L.) 2 Advanced Research Center, Central South University, Changsha 410083, China * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +86-15904920851 Abstract: Red shale is widely distributed among the deep mine areas of Kaiyang Phosphate Mine, which is the biggest underground phosphate mine of China. Because of the effect of various factors, such as high stress, ground water and so on, trackless transport roadways in deep mine areas were difficult to effectively support for a long time by using traditional supporting design methods. To deal with this problem, some innovative works were carried out in this paper. First, mineral composition and microstructure, anisotropic, hydraulic mechanical properties and other mechanical parameters of red shale were tested in a laboratory to reveal its deformation and failure characteristics from the aspect of lithology. Then, some numerical simulation about the failure process of the roadways in layered red shale strata was implemented to investigate the change regulation of stress and strain in the surrounding rock, according to the real rock mechanical parameters and in-situ stress data. Therefore, based on the composite failure law and existing support problems of red shale roadways, some effective methods and techniques were adopted, especially a kind of new wave-type bolt that was used to relieve rock expansion and plastic energy to prevent concentration of stress and excess Citation: Ma, C.; Xu, J.; Tan, G.; Xie, deformation.

  • Last Year's Merger with Westwood One Cemented
Kirk Dialing Up Country Stirlandast year’s merger with Westwood One cemented Dial Global’s place as the largest independent radio network/syndication company and brought an exhaustive array LLof satellite formats, programs and services under one roof. Certainly not lost in that lineup is a substantial Country presence. President/Programming Kirk Stirland has been at the forefront of that integration and is charged with providing future direction for the company. And that’s no small task when faced with competitors who are integrated with large station groups – Clear Channel/Premiere and Cumulus Media. However, for Stirland, a nine-year company vet, network radio is a familiar place. Pre- viously President of WOR Radio Network, he has prior stops at Unistar/Westwood One, ABC Radio Network and NBC-The Source. Country Aircheck asked him about merger integration, his Country platform and what he learned on a recent visit to Nashville. He also revealed that his story follows a pattern familiar to many – it all starts with a song. And a country song, to boot. Country Aircheck: Dial Global has come through a series of acquisitions over the years – Waitt, Jones, and Westwood One 24/7 – leading up to the recent merger with the rest of Westwood One. Did those earlier assimilations make this process easier? KS: Dial Global has grown a great deal through acquisition, and we have learned from every single one, so we were prepared for the complexity that our merger with Westwood One entailed. We THE INTERVIEW were, and are, focused on keeping the qualities that have made us successful all the way along.
