Herzlich Willkommen zur ersten gemeinsamen Konferenz der D-A-CH Fachgesellschaften für Geschlechterforschung/-studien „Aktuelle Herausforderungen der Geschlechterforschung“ vom 28. Sept. bis 30. Sept. 2017 an der Universität zu Köln. Weltumspannende Konfliktlagen und das beständige Ringen höchst unterschiedlicher Akteur_innen darum, vielfältige verletzbare Lebensformen in ihren Differenzen gleichberechtigt zu stützen, fordern ‚Wissenschaft‘ als an diesen Weltverhältnissen beteiligte, spezifische Praxis heraus. Anliegen der ersten gemeinsamen Tagung der Fachgesellschaften für Geschlechterforschung/_studien aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz ist es, Kernfragen der Gegenwart – etwa der globalen Ungleichheiten, der kulturalisierten und ethnisierten Konflikte, der Fluchtmigration, der Belastung ökologischer Ressourcen und deren technologischer Gestaltung, von Krieg und gewaltförmigen Auseinandersetzungen sowie der Diskriminierung und Anerkennung körperlicher und sexueller Vielfalt – von Seiten der Geschlechterforschung aufzugreifen und zu diskutieren. Die internationale Tagung versteht sich somit als Raum des Austauschs, um Zeitdiagnosen, Theoriebildungen und Methodenfragen ebenso wie Fragen der Institutionalisierung von Forschung und Lehre in ihren unterschiedlichen Akzentuierungen zu verhandeln. Konferenz | Aktuelle Herausforderungen der Geschlechterforschung 28.–30. September 2017 1 Welcome! Welcome to „Present Challenges of Gender Studies“, the first joined international conference of the associations of gender studies from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, taking place from September 28th to September 30th 2017 at the University of Cologne. Worldwide conflicts and the continued struggle of highly distinct actors to support diverse and vulnerable modes of existence on equal footing challenge science as a specific practice participating in these world relations. The major concern of the first joined conference of the gender studies associations of Germany, Austria and Switzerland is to pick up and discuss – from the point of view of gender studies – the crucial questions of the present, such as global inequalities, culturalised and ethnisised conflicts, forced migration, the contamination of ecological resources and their technological designings, wars and violent quarrels, as well as discriminations against and acknowledgements of bodily and sexual diversity. The international conference thus views itself as a space of exchange, in which analyses of the present, developments of theories and questions of methodology as well as questions of institutionalisation of research and teaching in their manifold accentuations can be debated. We are looking forward to numerous and intense discussions! Maher: Darius Milhaud in the United States, 1940–71: Transatlantic Constructions of Musical Identity (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) When the French Jewish composer Darius Milhaud (1892–1974) fled his homeland with his wife and son at the time of the German invasion in 1940, this displacement marked the beginning of three decades of engagement with the musical culture and institutions of the United States. After seven years of wartime exile in Oakland, California, Darius and Madeleine Milhaud divided their time between Oakland and Paris, taking on a transatlantic existence that enabled them to assume distinct roles in U.S. musical life. Both during and after World War II, the composer taught on the faculty of Mills College, participated in intersecting musical networks, and continued to compose prolifically. He also continually renegotiated his identity as a composer—and as a Frenchman in the United States—in response to professional opportunities, personal circumstances, and cultural shifts. This dissertation presents the first in-depth study of Milhaud’s activity in the United States, interpreting the results of new archival research through frameworks of identity construction and transnational mobility.
